"It's a salamander or some kind of frog". No, it's not! It's quite obviously a chameleon! Just look at at the enameled pattern on the underside, it's a chameleon's tail
I always find it amazing how such beautiful works of art in jewelry are worth so little. If you went into any jewelry store and bought a simple 1.5 karat engagement ring it would easily cost $7k upwards... and these new rings have no history, weren’t handcrafted with such attention to detail. Time and again I see this on the roadshow and I’m always shocked. With age and pedigree, I wish they would increase in price!
Younger women want new engagement rings or newly made jewelry. They don’t particularly care for the history of their rings and would rather it be brand new. Real shame. One day it’ll be trendy to collect and show off older jewelry again.
This is why, when I asked my wife to marry me, I had my grandmothers diamonds put into a new setting. Her original ring was far too gaudy and ostentatious. My wife wouldn’t have liked it.
Me too! A new ring would be that much. So how can a 400 year old ring be that cheap? Advertise that and then auction and the price would be higher I'm sure of it.
Supply and demand. It's as simple as that. The reason prices for these rings are low is because there isn't much demand for them, especially from young women, who are the biggest consumers of jewelry. So the supply sits languishing, decreasing prices even more. And if sheer amounts of labor was the only thing that provided value in the marketplace, then teachers and nurses should be making way more than bankers. But that's not the case at all...
The appreciation of jewelry & antiques isn't always shared by family members and personal wealth goes up and down. Selling it may be the only option for some people.
from before the 19's and has tons of diamonds and gold on it, especially those diamonds, and weights alot thats a 30-50k ring because of its rarity and age. seriously these appraisers seems so off, try buying a 1875's ring with that much diamonds on it today it wont be below 10k
Not every diamond is worth anything..the quality of the diamond is what gives it value...the gold goes by weight...so whatever market value was at the time of the appraisal...so really with this ring what gives it value is the age and rarity of the piece itself, and if the quality of the design is good that may add value as well.
I was thinking 15k to 20k at auction, especially with a more knowledgeable jewelry historian’s opinion - I’m not a jewelry appraiser, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
A lot of people in the comments are saying it's a chameleon but their heads aren't flat like this and the one distinguishing feature they have besides the tail is the big round eyes on either side of the head. That being said, they didn't gave PBS or Google back when it was made, just some sketches in books by adventurers/explorers, donuts probably the best they could do. Without looking at the bottom and finding the curled tail, it certainly looks like a 🐸 not a lizard of any kind
Exactly! Like any art, the artist will take liberties with the science. I’d guess frog or salamander as they both have poisonous types (chameleons do not). And it’s a play on the poison jewelry. Thank you for this!
A poison ring is merely a type of ring that opens to reveal a hidden compartment, Originally, they were designed to allow the wearer to slip poison subtly into someone's food or drink or to poison themselves if captured by an enemy. There are also poison bracelets and necklaces.
"salamander, frog...some sort of lizard" ...."enamel, some sort of pattern"...Dude, it's clearly a chameleon and the underside of the ring is it's tail painted on the metal.
Does anyone know of a website that I can use to find the worth of an art piece? The bounty at st. petersburg monte belden. I can find under the sail but not this one.
My mother in law has some sort of poison ring that she let me wear for Halloween years ago when I was going to a party as a spy in a long Chinese dress. She gave me the dress recently, but I sure would like to have the ring, too. She has given me a jade necklace and a garnet ring.
I love the way she said it's not for sale, with conviction
she has use for it lul
That's a gorgeous piece, I love how the enamel wraps all around it. Beautiful
@Anthony Tsatsis definitely some sort of lizard
"It's a salamander or some kind of frog". No, it's not! It's quite obviously a chameleon! Just look at at the enameled pattern on the underside, it's a chameleon's tail

Agreed! The hours of skilled labor in this ring...

An owner who actually does a decent bit of research. Well done.
My favorite is when the owners say its not for sale. They know they have a good piece and they appreciate and enjoy it.
Best part is the frog is a named “poison dart frog” in real life which is really WHY it’s called that. Appraiser: salamander maybe a FROG
Oo really that’s great 😁 it’s not for sale!!😂
She knocked me out w that!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a Flex
Nobody asked her if it was! Lol.
She was really stern there haha
ONLY 5k to 7k.. After it being in family ALL those yrs and its a one of a kind even by today standards.. I wouldn't sell either...
The appreciation of jewelry & antiques isn't always shared by family members and personal wealth goes up and down. Selling it may be the only option for some people.
But look at all those diamonds and the beautiful workmanship. I thought diamonds alone were way more than that.
This is so exquisite!
… but, can we talk about Sarah Churgin’s ring???? Omggggg! What a BEAUTY! 💜
That’s one of the coolest rings I’ve ever seen
So happy we got to see this piece from one angle
Not a salamander or a frog - it´s a camelion
A Chameleon.
No tail?
Yes, the "leaves"underneath are actually a curled tail...
@@baitclicker9414 I caught that too. maybe we should be appraisers lol
@@baitclicker9414 yeah idk how they missed that it was so obvious

I agree.
Trust no one.
Lala Addas Since this lady couldn’t even identify the type of animal correctly, I don’t think I’d trust her appraisal one bit.
I was thinking the same thing. She was hoping she would have sold it for $5000
Wonderful/beautiful piece, really fine artswork.
It's worth more based on the my meaningless opinion
I had it somewhere around 18,000.
It's always lower than what I think. I'm like "give the woman a million dollars!"

Chele
🤣🤣
As a guy I don't really wear rings but if I did it'd be a ring like that.
Other than poison, what would a man store in the compartment?
"Its not for sale!" Lol
Stunning work of art. Beautiful ring the appraiser is wearing too.
Beautiful ring! Really nice piece.
2:15 the appraisers ring is awesome as well.js
Beautiful piece!
Beautiful. It's obviously a lizard. The enamaling on the the underside is the coiled tale of the lizard.
I have a poison ring, i gave it to my daughter and now she wants poison to put in it 😂
Wanna sell it? Lol
Be careful she hasn't put an insurance policy out on you.
Omg! I’m always looking for poison rings and I never can find the perfect one for me! But that one I want!
Dang! The man at 1:03 is still holding it tight at 1:57!!!
LMAO I had to go back and forth a few times but died when I finally seen it 😂🤣

"It's not for sale" lmao yeah if i had something that nice i wouldn't sell it either
especially at that price... I feel like that woman was lowballing her like crazy
Kinda surprised she wasn't given an insurance price...most of them would have heard that and told them "well in that case I would insure it for ...."
That lady was so funny when she said " It's not for sale". I don't blame her one bit.
Oh we were talking at the table and Ricky from Pawn Stars said I can give her $100.00 not a penny more!
I know a guy...
Hes gotta frame it.....
I would wear it !

Lol that butthole is hungry
@Chris Russell 😂
OMG hilarious. I didn't notice, must have been looking at the ring. Looks uncomfortable to me!!
Who’s hungry!!!
Hard to thumbs up, Martin, you are right.
I'm glad she said it's not for sale, most people don't have sentiment any more
having bills to pay is so last year, right?
Really nice
such a nice ring, i think she should keep it.
Her husband noticed she started wearing her ring again when she had the great initiative to get him a life insurance.
😂
That ring is... POISONNNNNNN!
Never trust a chameleon with a smile!! Lol
The appraiser was shaking 😅..she might be so nervous
Its beautiful
All that and they don't explain why it's a "poison" ring.
A poison ring is merely a type of ring that opens to reveal a hidden compartment, Originally, they were designed to allow the wearer to slip poison subtly into someone's food or drink or to poison themselves if captured by an enemy. There are also poison bracelets and necklaces.

Maybe a snuff ring?
Nicole Huber cocaine ?
Ooh good thought!

I’m pretty sure that’s a chameleon just by looking at the enamel on the bottom it’s clearly a tail and it’s green

Its a chameleon, its tail goes all the way round and on the underneath of the ring.
That is so cool. Give that reptile or amphibian a breath mint. :0)
