    I was disappointing by their choice to make movies, but having actually seen the film and being a high level volleyball player my whole life, this film was a WAY more realistic depiction of a volleyball match in terms of pacing and the actual events that happen. I know it's disappointing for manga readers having memorable moments missing, but the actual game was very realistic and paced well imo. I liked it a lot, but I would also enjoy a full season with extended coverage of the match.

      This is very true but also very sad since haikyuu is a story about characters.This is why I hope Prod IG will realize just how fucking loved Haikyuu is and put money onto multiple seasons (just like Demon Slayer)

    • @OsSas3
      @OsSas3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Haikyuu main focus was never the matches. If I wanted to watch a volleyball game, I'll tune in VBTV. Haikyuu is about the characters, learning and developing during matches. By cutting and making a "realistic pacing" (which isn't true cause they did a TON of flashbacks that cut the pace) they butchered almost every member of Nekoma and Karasuno apart from Kenma, Kuroo, Hinata and Tsuki. This match had many powerful themes that the director ignored: The match is not about certain people, is about two schools who will continue the tradition even when the current generation graduate, it's a legacy. The last point showed how comfortable, fun and into the game both teams were that they disconnect from a moment, feeling like thay were at other place (not just a Kenma at the brink of dying having an allucination). So no, it's not just about "awesone moments", it's about having characters fleshed out cause they are more than just players.

      I am not a manga reader but enjoyed the movie; However I went to read the manga since I heard many scenes were cut of and I actually get their disappointment. They literally cut of so many scenes like the past of grandpa Ukai and the old coach of Nekoma (forgot his name) explaining why this Dumpster match is so important... As others said, Haikyu is about the characters, their development and much more rather than the match. I am really curious on how they will animate all the rest in 1 movie now

    Fukunaga being a menace was cut out of the movie. He already had the least characterization among Nekoma regulars. Even the substitute libero had his moment in the OVA to portray more about his personality, skills, and blossoming chemistry with Lev. But we don't even see in animated form how much of a great player Fukunaga was? I was robbed

    • @oEllery
      @oEllery  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I always felt like Fukunaga got the most cuts of any character from the OVA, Season 4, and now this movie, too. Agreed... 🥲

    I think we've all known since the announcements of the movies that the remaining matches were going to be rushed, as a Nishinoya fanboy I was genuinely devastated that his heel save was cut and your analysis of the movie is bang on. It's proof that we really should have had it in a seasonal format, at the very least the rest of nationals and rounded out with a long movie for Brazil/Hinata's return.
    Having said that, the movie itself is fantastically made and I love it dearly. Just can't help but wonder what if...

  • @mysteryx267
    @mysteryx267 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

    Tbh the issue was that it was movie. It may sound obvious but I genuinely don't think they could've done better than they did with a run time of 80ish minutes. The movie is pretty much the best we could've hoped for the second we heard that the series would end with two movies instead of another season. Honestly I'm more concerned for the next movie which will have to cover probably the most important game in the series (Karasuno vs Kamomedai) as well as the Brazil arc and Jackals vs Adlers. Covering one game is already pushing it as we saw with this movie. But two games and a training arc?!!! I genuinely don't see any way they can truly conclude the series with only one more movie and I really hope they realize that and just decide to go for one more season. Haikyu is popular enough for another season to be profitable so I hope they consider it before it's too late, if it isn't already.

    • @oEllery
      @oEllery  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      100% Agree with this take. I'm still hoping the next movie is Kamomedai and the end of "Haikyuu" and then there's like a post-timeskip Haikyuu Z for the rest of the material.

  • @pranavm6396
    @pranavm6396 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    There were many important scenes straight up removed from the movie:
    1. Kageyama, the prodigy setter-
    As you said, Kageyama's thought process. But it leads to one of the thrilling sets of all time - A long set to the middle - To Hinata when he sees him struggle so many times. But for the first time, Hinata fumbles and barely makes it past the blocks as a feint. This scene was epic. Instead, this was replaced by a great spike on the first go. I felt awful as I felt they removed the quirks of what makes Hinata - lovable.
    2. Hinata's wish-
    When Kenma drops after losing to Hinata (feint to push) and he says, "This was fun", the exhilaration in the movie was just Hinata shouting and a few flashbacks. But this could have been done so much better. I really did not feel the goosebumps.
    3. Hinata's DUNN jump -
    Hell, I could somehow hear this when reading the manga, but not in the movie. Imagine the disappointment. Such a drastic change in his jump, and it felt the same as his other ones.
    4. Kageyama's line -
    While they show Hinata (as a crow) in a cage, they fail to include Kageyama. Kenma basically obliterates the lightning quick attack, removing Kageyama's famous and favorite attack. This makes him feel as he's caged too and he goes, "This is a real cramped way to play volleyball." And this, then leads to him making the decision to set a beautiful high arch to Hinata. This was very well thought through and deserved to be in the movie.
    Also, he learns about the curse of speed. "Kageyama who was easy prey for the curse of speed no longer exists." - I don't remember if this was in the movie, but it didn't leave an impact. Coz this line with everything that kageyama was about - "Move faster, jump higher, be quicker" before - brings chills down my spine.
    5. The ace:
    Nekoma's libero had such a hard time against Asaahi's spikes and yet he manages to bump so many. But his hands tremble at each receive, so much that I can see the blood clots in a black and white manga. He even tells someone about how much it burns or such. I don't see why this needed to be removed.
    6. Oni and oni
    In the anime, nekoma's coach mentioned that once Hinata grows, they will no longer be oni and his club - they will be oni and oni (monster and monster). This exact thing happened in the dumpster battle. Albeit there was a lot of support from Kageyama. But we see so many receives equivalent to that of our guardian angel, spikes that only he could do on a much higher scale, decoy plays and man.. his reflexes and mental strength to overcome Kenma. Also the statement -" that wasn't half bad" for Hinata's jump from Kageyama was all him.
    7. The game-
    At the end, the way these two teams play so free that they themselves and the audience feel like they're watching a practice match in their school grounds. This was the most beautiful part of this entire arc. They replaced this with a few sec of something similar which made me more upset than I can reveal.
    8. Missed Serves:
    Kageyama gets a no touch ace. This is insane against a team like Nekoma.
    Kuro's serves against Daichi was represented a one on one fight a few times and this was ignored for whatever reason.
    Tanaka's tries as well.. but you covered this.
    There are so many more, but I don't want to feel more disappointed than I already am.
    Thank you for making this video and hope you continue to love Haikyuu. ( That missing nishinoya's play was criminal and punishable by death. )

    I finally watched the movie, and I gotta admit tho, it exceeded my expectations based on what everyone’s said abt it. The animation was spot on, and it was engaging, chaotic, and had new and creative angles beyond anything we’ve seen in previous seasons. Ik ppl are mad that it’s short and cut out a crazy amount and that’s totally valid, but at least they kept the quality and intrigue...can’t exactly say the same for Blue Lock S2 😆
    Like the cutting of content was what made the movie bad, but looking at the movie alone w/o reference to the manga, it was KICKA$$ & just amazing in every way

    6:47 It's not because he's the shotest player, his back row attacks don't make it to the center line of the opponent's court. So without a blocker, Nekoma thought they easily pick up the ball up by falling backwards towards the end of the court, but Daichi wanted to go attacking by swinging at the net and got the point. My only hope is that the money this movie made can fund another 3 seasons to finish out the series (assuming they make the Dumpster Battle as one season like season 3) because I need to see the Black Jackals vs the Adlers animated fully and properly

    Thank you for making this. I was dreading the movies when they first got announced, and so before watching this one i intentionally kept myself from rereading the manga because I knew I was going to be disappointed if i remembered what happened. And that was probably a good decision in the end because I had a VERY good time seeing the movie in theaters. However, having now reread the manga I am now feeling this...if i may be a bit dramatic, principled rage for how they handled things. Haikyuu at the end of the day is standout to most because of how it handles its cast. How it gives life to every single person, down to single members of the CROWD. It's a story that thrives into not letting a single character go to waste, to the point where most starting line players on every shown team have CHARACTER SHEETS that are displayed at the end of manga chapters. I was already feeling unsure about the cuts displayed back during the two tokyo OVAs and during the tsubakihara match, but this movie really cuts deep. Haikyuu thrives on its character depth, and by cutting that you are SEVERELY crippling the story that so many people love. It feels like they've forgotten the message that episode 16 in season 1 worked very hard to imprint in our heads.

    I had asked a question once about why they don't include everything from the manga to the anime and not deviate from the manga and it was because they encourage the people to read the manga. I think Haiykuu! as a whole is such an unfortunate example of missed timing. Because the manga has been finished for so many years, the waning interest has felt a lot more noticeable in these movies. For such an iconic and inspirational manga, everything matters. This movie felt like it misunderstood the fact that character writing was always the strong point, and because of that we only saw straight volleyball highlights, which ruined the dramatic impact that so many of these moments cultivated over so many arcs.

    With such an amazing story and a cast of characters, it's just really sad to see this beloved series come down this. Haikyuu is one of those stories where a movie format simply looks terrible. With so much screen time/setup needed for some of these characters, a pace of a movie compared to a fully fleshed out season is too detrimental.
    Even with such a celebrated series like Arcane, quite a handful of people are complaining about its pacing and how it's trying to cover too many plots/subplots and paying them off too quickly. Arcane just makes it work though and their BTS made it clear they wanted to stick to the format they have. Mugen Train from Demon Slayer also a good stand alone movie (not to mention the smaller episodes leading up to it). We're introduced to that one character basically just in the span of the movie; the character completes their full character arc and continues to leave an significant impact for the rest of the series.
    Haikyuu focuses on not only Karasuno and its players, but also the numerous teams, players, and coaches on the other side. The series is more than just volleyball and emphasizes the character's relationship with one another and the bond/dynamic they form with each other.
    tldr; Movie pacing for a story like Haikyuu, not ideal. No time to flesh out the rest of the cast that were setup from previous seasons. Less moments for us to 'take it easy' and appreciate the Haikyuu moments that leave a lasting impression on us.
    Still enjoyed the movie as I was watching it, just sad it wasn't given the opportunity for it to be even greater. Hope to be proven wrong on the next one. Also as an anime only, feels like I wasn't given too much confidence going into the Kamomedai match even after this Nekoma match. Hoshiumi got the commentators calling him an 'one man army.' Like please😭. Knowing what bits I know from the manga now though and how insane Karasuno's players are too, I have some faith they can pull it off.

    I feel that they completely missed what makes Haikyuu matches great. It's a season full of building tension and excitement which you finally see coming to a conclusion on the last episode, which makes each match intense. By making it into a movie, they completely lost the tension. It felt too quick for my liking and since this isn't a real volleyball match, I didn't find myself excited for the finale. i do think that the way scenes were directed here can be used for future parts if they are seasons[pacing wise, not animation because that would cost more and would need overworking staff even more]
    but story wise and character wise[including kenma , shoyo and kuroo] the movie did feel very poor and anime wise , i'd say that pretty much every major match before this[detoko, both seijoh matches, shiratorizawa, inarizaki] was better and some minor matches were better too[kakugawa, wakutani] , which is quite sad given that it's my favorite match in the manga and it doesn't make me confident for my 2nd favorite match in the manga[kamomedai]

    So basically, the disappointments people have is that it's not like the manga, completely forgetting that it's a movie and they have to streamline it. There's almost never criticism about the ACTUAL movie

    What I actually want to see here is how the battle in the dumpster started, where it really begin

    • @oEllery
      @oEllery  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It's at the very start of the match! In the manga, the first few chapters of this arc are all about Granda Ukai and Nekomata 😭

      @oEllery yes i know, and they really missed that part since its the very foundation of the battle of the dumpster

    as much as i love haikyuu it just makes me upset that there are are part of the mannga which are not in the anime especially in the movie like they cut off so many parts that its not funny they did not add one of fav nishinoya plays and its not funny i just hope they do not cut of more parts in the other movie cuz it wont be nice

    Ok question, which Manga chapter should I read to read about this match?

    • @oEllery
      @oEllery  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      293 is where the scenes between Grandpa Ukai and Coach Nekomata start! After that is the match!

    The movie was amazing. Yes, they cut stuff because they had to, but the movie still ended up incredible in the end. Manga readers are out here acting like it was total trash because it's missing a few moments.

      First off haikyuu is really not a series where you can make any match a movie... especially not the nekoma match.
      Secondly, nobody is saying the movie is trash ...the movie however does infact cuts out alot of the part which makes haikyuu arguably the best sports manga...sure you can argue that it's for the shortage of time, to which the counter argument would always be why not make this entire match a season

    The producers needed more budget. No fan decided to run a GoFund initiative becoz everyone was selfish. So all you get is the movie, little bois. Carry yourself a river.

    The nishinoya save on this match is so overrated. Feels so forced in the manga to just have a nishinoya moment
