A great great woman!!! What she contributed to folk, blues, gospel and jazz... is remarkable!!! She was the real thing. A true artist. We love you Odetta!!! You'll be missed.
not to mention all the famous people who were inspired by her and became the people they are because of her.....
I knew Odetta since the early 60's. We became close friends through some of the 70's. She was going to do a song of mine but the album fell through because of a bad record producer. We didn't care, we were still close. Then, as things happen, we drifted apart. Now it's so good to see and hear her on youtube. She was as classy off stage as she was on stage. One of those truly beautiful people.
What a touching story, hope ur alive and well👍🙏
@@nukritik2933 I'm still kicking. Thanks for the really nice comment.
@@lancedickson5268 You're welcome👍
Fascinating story. Thanks for sharing
She is greatest... influencing Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and thousands of us playing songs of work and freedom back in the 50's and 60's. we love you Odetta keep that little light shining.
Never tire of listening to her divine voice. She and Leadbelly--changed our lives. Means still so much to anyone who has heard her--the struggle and celebration of what's real --is there and eternal. Thank you ODETTA!!!
Hers is a timeless voice, reaching with ease across generations.
What a voice. What a heart. What a soul. Bravo, Odetta!
Came here looking for something and was not disappointed. TH-cam's Tower Junkies remember the faces of their fathers very well :D
Odetta will live on forever! Keep up that gorgeous voice in the Afterlife Sweetheart. You will be missed.
A heart sings like the beauty of all songs ever heard in any lifetime.
Beautiful song.
Thanks for sharing it.
Bloody hell, what a voice, what a singer...
Sai Odetta!! Beautiful song of the final days
She was blues folk gospel etc
In the last few years of her life she received 2 Grammy nominations-one for Blues and one for folk. She also received many folk awards and some blues awards as well.
Just brilliant! Odetta what a fantastic jazz / blues singer you are!
Yeah, I'm still here. 86 yrs, still kickin' and I love you, Odetta an I always will.
It's her smoothness and phrasing for me....not a single flaw, not a'one!
Just heard this for the first time (how is that possible?!?) on world cafe and came here to listen a couple more times. What an awesome, powerful, perfect performance!
Love this kinda jazzy feel here. I used to play the old time folkie version when I was younger. But some people really know how to put a song over to ya. Make ti real. Odetta was one of those people. No matter how she sang it or who she was singing with. This is great. Awesome. Thanks for posting. "Jen"
Wow,I thought Odetta was a fictional character and careless love a song made in S.King's head!!I'm amazed they're both real!
Thank you for explaining all the puzzling Stephen King references on this board.
Same here. Long days, pleasant nights, sai
Soothing song with a surprising twist of humour. I didn't notice any humour in Bessie Smith's version of this song, but that might've just been me not being very observant. Odetta can sing.
I love this music. Its the best I hv heard today. Your voice is marvelous. Give us more.
That's really nice keyboard work. She trusts him.
Thank you. *Odetta Holmes - Dec. 31, 1930 - Dec. 2, 2008* - Shared on Facebook, Dec. 2, 2020
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May you have twice the number
wow she goes into St Louis Blues! Stunning.
PS i meant I used to play the folkie version of Careless Love,,,,then Odetta here blows my mind with St Louis Blues........My man gotta heart like a rock in the sea.....*sigh* Probably the most honest blues tune of all.
What a strong voice!!!
I've always loved her voice. More please!
This woman worth all love my opinion
perfect her voice gives me goosebumps so soulful
One of the best!
I’ve become a huge “late in life” Odetta fan.
Just read the Ian Zack biography. Phenomenal artist. Phenomenal artistic perseverance.

Love this song & now I know what it means

Grande
You tell em momma; Sing it like it is! OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!
Grandissima.
Susan Delgado!!!
Not everybody needs a bunch of musicians, back-up singers, background dancers, strobe lights, and a 4th of July pyrotechnics display to make music. Some folks just need heart, soul, and talent....and maybe a piano player.
if i could get halfway there....
wonderful
WONDERFUL!!!
Rest in peace, safe passage Odetta.
what a voice!

thaknx You Tube
@iiams0504 Thank you sai
Somehow I think this song ought to have a slow(er) tempo...but I guess Odette should know
She's a great Dame!
Where can this recording be bought, please ?
Thanks.
Geert Dehoux, classical pianist.
Good version... but my absoloute favourite is by zutty singleton and his creole band
/watch?v=Z3TYrbLrZrQ
josh white and blind boy fuller both do great versions too
like if stephen king brought you here.
@hyperbole11 Ode to the Dark Tower
Are you talking about Roland don't you?
Ed Alstrom on piano?
Odetta mentions that the pianist is Ed Alstrom. Apparently Alstrom works more on organ than on piano. Is that what your question mark was about?
