I am fairly new to nursing, but I started using teg acrylic pretty much right from the get go, and I gotta tell ya, I never once thought to fold back those flaps before applying the dressing to make removing them that much easier. Thank you so much. I will do this every time now!

What if you didn't put any thing on the wound edges before putting on the film? Because I already put the adhesive film on there but didn't put anything on the wound prior to that (so no 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film) Is this a problem?

3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film is a skin sealant/barrier that is used protect skin from body fluids, adhesives and friction. In the context of a semi-permeable dressing, like Tegaderm, it is used to prevent the adhesion of the film to the skin around the site of the wound. This decreases the chance of wound maceration or damage to the skin cause by excessive moisture. This would be similar to swimming in the pool or soaking your skin for too long in the water and it becomes wrinkled.
Tegaderm is semi-permeable transparent film dressing that was designed to prevent the passage of liquids, bacteria and viruses to wound, while allowing moisture vapor and gas exchange through the dressing. Meaning that it allows some moisture and oxygen to transfer in and out of the film, but prevent water and organism from getting to the wound. It keeps a good balance of moist wound care.
However, depending on the type of wound, a wound can create excessive exudate or discharge that can increase the chance of skin maceration (skin damage from excessive moisture).
The management of this wound care, in conjunction with Tegaderm, would be to use the Tegaderm film as a secondary dressing (as a sort of tape to hold the primary dressing place) in conjunction with a primary dressing (dressing that will make contact with the wound) such as gauze or other gelling type dressing to promote moist wound care. Tegaderm should only be really used superficial and shallow wounds that aren't too deep such as minor cuts, and that only produce a low amount of exudate.
TLDR; Your wound will most likely be okay as long as there isn't any excessive moisture. Keep an eye out on it and if there is excessive discharge or the skin looks to be pale and wrinkled from moisture, then it is time to change the dressing.

Thank you for the question! 3M™ Cavilon™ No Sting Barrier Film can be used under medical adhesives to reduce the risk of Medical Adhesive Related Skin Injury (MARSI). If a skin barrier is not used, it is important to use proper adhesive removal technique to protect fragile or at-risk skin. The Instructions for Use state:
      1. Carefully lift the film edges from the skin. If there is difficulty lifting the dressing, apply tape to the edge and use the tape to lift. Avoid forceful removal of the dressing to minimize disruption of the wound bed.
      2. Continue lifting the film until all edges are free from the skin surface.
      3. Remove the dressing slowly, folding it over itself. Pull carefully in the direction of hair growth.

      Thank you!
