  • I'm having issues with my August WiFi 4th gen smart lock. I contacted August technical support, and they asked that I send them a video. Silly them, making videos is what I do!! So, this is a combination review/problem report. I hope you find this video informative, and I WILL be making an update to this video so that I can share with you what the resolution to this problem is.

      Right? People just don't think about stuff like that, and expect batteries to last forever. I also wish they would last forever, but I understand why they don't. :) Thanks for watching!

    I have a Yale smart lock with the August module built in to it. I didn't have an any issue with it via the app but I did need to reset my password for me to have to connect it with HA. Then the funny thing was I log in with my phone number on the app but when I did that in HA it didn't like that. I needed to use my email address. Just something else to keep you wondering but why?

      Yeah, the cloud integration works, it's just super slow. Local control is always preferable, not only in terms of speed, but reliability. I hate having to rely on cloud-based integrations.

      I had the same issue, but it was happening when trying to remotely lock it. Again it would do the same thing in the video, move back and forth slightly continuously. If I opened the door and try remotely locking it, then it worked correctly. So I surmised it has to do with the bolt hitting the inside of the door jam. Using a flathead screw driver I simply scraped a bit more wood from the inside of jam so the bolt would be sure not to hit it when trying to close/lock. Afterwards the issue went away. So if it's doing while opening then I think it has to do with some kind of calibration issue that the lock doesn't think it's opened all the way. Not sure if this helps but I thought I would post this anyway as some may find it useful.

    I just installed one for a client today, brand new straight out of the box. It locks but when you unlock it, it still thinks it’s locked on the app….. so major safety concern if it’s not locked but the app says it is. Absolutely disgusted by the inferior product

      Yeah, they are far from the best. The local bluetooth control works a bit better than going through the cloud, but the range is, of course, somewhat limited. I keep meaning to get a bluetooth extender, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I still with they'd let me use HomeKit, but apparently their devs just aren't that bright.

    I have had similar problems. Not sure how I fixed lock trying to lock when already locked. Maybe Replacing batteries and recalibration fixed. But what continues to happen is the battery that powers the Wi-Fi connection is dying every few weeks, the btry that powers motor has full charge. Support told me this was an issue with compatibility issue with Wi-Fi and they sent me their Wi-Fi bridge, but the product is not compatible with Wi-Fi lock. Had lock for years, This is a new problem that recently started. I suspect it’s software issue.

      Not sure if you're still using the lock, but I recently made a video about how to add ESP32 Bluetooth proxies to Home Assistant. My next video (coming out in a few days) will be able how to add the August locks to Home Assistant via Bluetooth. Might resolve your connectivity issue!

      @@fasthowto Its no longer an issue. I believe August updated their app to fix the issue. My guess is that Apple update broke something and then August had to update their app to fix

      So couple things thanks for the share as I was looking into the August 4th Gen. I had a 3rd Gen that had different issues but was hoping the 4th Gen would be better built.
      On the HomeKit concerns you have; not sure how much knowledge you have on HomeKit and the architecture. It’s not August fault you can’t activate HomeKit without an iOS device that’s Apple design. Yes HomeKit uses Bluetooth (and now thread) for door locks. That is a security feature that Apple did and for manufacturers to get Apple HomeKit or I should say Apple Home certification Bluetooth is required no WiFi. Like I said Thread is now available. Since you are using home assistant Matter will be the way to go if controlling your devices local is you concern.
      I’m a avid HomeKit user so some of the complaints you have aren’t August fault it’s just home Apple implemented things. Hope that helps.

      @fasthowto  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NewHomeTech I'm not buying it. I have several other homekit devices, including a garage door opener. Garage doors are also exterior home doors, and should be secured - and none of the rest of my homekit devices required an apple device, and they all work using wifi. August just didn't think this through all the way, and hopped WAY too deep into bed with apple without fully understanding what the hell they were doing. Trust me, wait for part 2 of this video where I discuss the outcome of the support case, and make public the responses I got from August.

      Doesn't surprise me. August makes some nice hardware, but their software leaves a LOT to be desired.
