  • Hey guys welcome to a brand new video. Today we will be taking a look at 2 popular single engine turboprop aircraft and comparing them!
    Our first aircraft is the The Piper M600/SLS which is a variant of Pipers M-Class Aircraft. Next is the newly certified Epic E1000.
    In 2015, Piper introduced the M600, as an upgrade to the M500. It received its FAA certification on June 18, 2016. Between June 2016 and March 2018, 50 were delivered, mostly in the U.S. and mostly are owner-flown. When Piper introduced the M600, we exceeded industry expectations for performance and operational ease in a single-engine pressurized turboprop. A clean-sheet designed wing was a key foundational enhancements that paved the way for product growth. Now we are using that platform to raise the bar in safety, luxury and support. Introducing the M600/SLS, setting new standards for aircraft in every category, meeting the highest standard in general aviation. Before we move on i wanted to point out that the Piper has a special Safety system. Its called The HALO™ Safety System which is a compilation of innovative technologies unique to the M600/SLS. Including but not limited to Hypoxia Recognition with Automatic Descent Mode Monitors pilot activity when the autopilot is engaged above 14,100 ft. If needed, it brings the aircraft to a lower altitude to allow recovery from hypoxia. If the pilot does not immediately recover, Autoland will activate and land the aircraft. Automatic Level Mode (Blue Button) Returns the aircraft to a wings-level attitude with zero vertical speed at the push of a button and SafeTaxi®A highly detailed, geo-referenced airport map displays your aircraft’s position on the airfield with an overlaid map of hold-short line.
    Next, The Epic E1000 is an American single-engine, six-seat, turboprop light aircraft under development by Epic Aircraft of Bend, Oregon. Epics aim wass that the E1000 will be the fastest single-engine civil aircraft at its time of introduction On Epic Aircraft official website this is how they describe the aircraft From urban city center to remote backcountry airstrips, the versatile E1000 provides access to more airports than any other aircraft in its class. With speed, performance, superior short field and slow handling capabilities, trailing link landing gear, and full reversing prop, Epic expands your horizons from the concrete jungle to the tropical jungle and beyond. Your choice. No sweat. Let the adventure begin.
    The flight deck of The Epic E1000 features a 3-Screen Garmin G1000 NXi Avionics Package with Synthetic Vision, and Sirius XM Weather. On the other hand the Piper SLS has a Garmin G3000 avionics package.

      @@marlintheaviator it's an awewome leap forward for single pilot safety in general aviation although for now at least only on very expensive aircraft. It's a pity Epic were so far into their certification process with the G1000 flight deck when "auto land" became available on the G3000, it would definitely be of huge interest to the buyers of the E1000 as primarily owner pilots.
      I have seen it suggested that Garmin may make available on other flight decks so may be an option for the G1000 at some point although Epic would need to find a certifiable auto throttle for inclusion on the E1000.

    I'm curious to know why you use cost per hour to compare the two aircraft that travel at such diverse speeds. Wouldn't the cost per nautical mile be a better, more realistic and meaningful way to compare them? Then again, one should also consider the value of the difference to the occupants' in time saved on, say a 3 hour trip and add that into the mix when comparing costs.

    • @jamesvelvet3612
      @jamesvelvet3612 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cost per nautical mile is a moving target: Depends on too many variables. Cost per hour is fixed. If you know the cost per hour, and how many hours you will be in the air you will have a number that is reality based. Cost with a 50 knot tail wind will probably be less than cost with 50 knot head wind, making cost per nautical mile moot. It is all about the hours you are in the air.

    The deciding factor for me is the HALO system in the M600. Hypoxia detection and auto descent, plus auto leveling and auto landing in case the pilot is incapacitated is a big thing. I like to fly fast too but I like getting to my destination more. If those feature are part of the Garmin G3000 then hell, I'll retrofit the Epic with that and boom. Your research is very inaccurate. I’ve only flown the experimental LT Epic, which uses same airframe aerodynamics and same PT6-67. Even in hot weather, flying west toward coast from BDN @FL260, fuel flow mid 60’s. I’ve several hours in PC12-NG using same engine and fuel flow was never above 82 at full power in climb.
      M600 powered by PT6-42 fuel flow 35gph @ full power? Seriously? You’ve clearly never flown this aircraft nor any PT6 powered aircraft. Piper rates long range flow at 38gph, iirc. That’s not real world, per several M500 & M600 pilots I know. Full power rating is 49gph, which is realistic @ 260ktas. Most pilots plan 42-44gph in cruise depending upon weather and of course flight level.

So the TBM price (I agree is over priced) but it includes the on board radar and might not be that much of a overkill when compared to the E1000 after all.
