  • In our first episode of 'How I Got Here' model, actor, entrepreneur and writer Emily Ratajkowski reveals the job that has impacted her life the most, the advice she would give to young models and the biggest lessons she's learnt in her career.
Ratajkowski has had a wide-reaching and varied working life, from her early modelling days to her current success as the New York Times bestselling writer of the essay collection My Body. In the first of our new series, How I Got Here, she sits down with us at Chiltern Firehouse, to look back on her career-to-date, from her milestone projects and how she has faced setbacks along the way to what she sees for the future.
"My first job was modelling," she says. "I remember doing Teen magazine and it was all very glamorous to me. The make-up artist over-plucked my eyebrows though..." While editorial modelling was Ratajkowski's initial career move, she first came to global attention thanks to her appearance in the Blurred Lines music video in 2013; a video that attracted its fair share of controversy.
"For a young girl going into modelling today, I would tell her that the agencies, as much as they seem like they're protecting you, they're not," she explains. "You have to learn to have your own limits and boundaries and to take care of yourself. I think the industry really needs to change, but that's one way that a young woman could protect herself."

She is also ignorant ! Stay on the catwalk and sell your soul … forget any career involving knowledge !

It’s disappointing how many people still seemed shocked these days when a beautiful woman is intelligent.

hearing the way she speaks is like listening (as opposed to looking) into a mirror .. its bizzare ! i am 19 currrently so to hear about where emily came from and her feelings when she was around my age , more specifically up to the 2 minute mark has given me so much reasurance !? quitting modelling to focus on a university degree , jobs i didnt land feeling like failures equating to me being hard on myself, its so amazing to see a woman i look up to having been through the same things and sharing the same feelings.... she is such a symbol of self acceptance to me, shes probably the only mainstream celebrity to have such a profound impact on me

I love her! That comment about having to decide whether to cover up or accentuate your beauty every day if you’re a woman. I felt that. Yes! Every day. And the impact the daily decision has on my life - it is bigger than most people want to acknowledge !

Our friendship, if ypu allow me to be blessed by this fortune, will guide us into whats best in us so we can take all humanity with us with confidence to a better place. Everybody wins if you succeed. Thats how I sugest we proceed. Reciprocity in fostering tenderness and care, knowing that respect is a given thing. Even those who once wish to harm us will eventually understand that our attwntion can be conquered by inspiring afection instead of creating fear. If tension installs at high levels nobody will enjpy anything. My vision of power is a chaim of positive impact radiating from generosity. I admire who do not take kindness for weakness, for ir reveals intelligence. You are an intelligent woman. What you say makes a difference.

How I got here: I took my clothes off and pranced around in the Blurred Lines video, used that to propel my career for what it was, and when the parts and modeling contracts started drying up, I complained I felt objectified in the video that made me famous and tried to pull the me too card.

Have you ever thought of it in this way- we as human beings are unique but our experiences are very similar. Maybe that’s the reason why cliches exist, because things have happened over and over again. There are only that many words you can express that with. What she’s talking about is very relatable especially if you’ve worked as a model, actress or professional dancer/singer. It’s a toxic world…
