Congrats. Looks great. I built a dual tv and projector wall last year and my biggest concern with the recessed was heat management on the TV. I still remember the heat generated by my older LCD and Plasma TVs. In the end painting the front wall black helped give me the frame effect. I ended not building a bump out since the wall hides the back and you never have to see the mess behind.
There's only 2 people who need to find this project satisfying!! It's your place and this style, along with your A/V expertise should create the experience you and Kristi desire. I own a log home, quite the opposite of yours. It may not satisfy the taste of many but I call it home and I enjoy my experience!! Great job! As someone who works as a part-time general contractor, getting this project done in 2 weeks is pretty damn fast. And it looks gorgeous to boot! Nice guys.
It took closer to three. Had I done it all myself I probably could've done it a week had I had nothing else to ALSO do around the house and with the channel, but yeah, things have a way of taking longer than expected.
Just finished a home Reno including a living room remodel and it was super nerve wracking! My wife and I ended up having to redo a lot of the work after the contractor left, including redrilling the studs for the tv mount because he missed 😑 definitely a proponent of DIY, next time I will pay for a babysitter to watch my kids and do it myself lol! Love how it is turning out my man, as rushed as you feel, making sure to nail it now will be so worth it soon!
This turned out fantastically. Congrats! Stylistically, this is VERY similar to what we did in my living room combined living /listening / watching space. We went with a slightly darker shaded tadelakt plaster in place of the limewash, but the feel is very similar. I wish we had recessed the TV like you did. It looks so polished!
I can empathize about 15%. With our new house and how it's arranged, it looked like an easy project to build a laundry chute from the upstairs master bedroom closet to the downstairs laundry room. The closet wall backed up to attic space directly above the laundry room, the studs in the wall spaced at a perfect spot, it seemed like a no-brainer. Well three weeks in and yeah, I'm still working in it. I feel you Andrew, I feel you. The wall looks great btw.
The projects that look easy turn out to be hard and some projects that I've dreaded have turned out to be easy. Nothing about home ownership makes any sense.
I conceived and had built pretty much the exact same idea in our home when we built several years ago. It works so well. I use the side "columns" to hold in-wall speakers. Works amazing. I screwed mine up though and we tilted the upper section for the original speaker design of the room. Wish it was just straight up like yours.
Amidst everything you and Kristy have going on in your lives, and everything you are doing to keep you viewers engaged…not to mention your fundraising awareness, you both still manage to take your channel to the next level ❤️

you've got me thinking about a shiplap treatment with a hidden French cleat to easy on and off mount a projection screen. looks great. it also deserves mentioning the convenience of running all your audio wires within and not affecting the insulation and vapour layer
The build out is a great way to cable manage. There is a fist-sized opening behind the concrete AV bench that I can literally pull what cables I need for what install from while hiding the rest. It's awesome!
As a homeowner I feel the pain. I've always suffered and fell back on DIY but that has cost me waiting literally years to afford things and learn how to do it right. It is a nightmare. Glad you are happy with the outcome!

I feel you man. We just built a new house and for the better part of two years now (house plans for living room were centered around being able to do this). I have been through so many design iterations to be able to figure out how to do a TV for daily viewing but then a projector screen for movie nights(every weekend) and I have yet to settle on a design. I have a full woodshop and also run 3D CAD for a living so I have the resources to DIY it all. I just can't freaking decide what set up. All the pros and cons keep me from making a decision and sticking to it. I am leaning TV Lift the TV down into a cabinet and have a fixed screen on the wall behind it but the 75" TV and only 8 foot ceilings make it less than ideal. I can cut an opening in the floor and have the TV go down between the joists (boxed in) and that gives me room, but part of that just seems crazy. lol. Then there is the long throw PJ vs UST and the costs associated. Drop down tab tensioned vs fixed screen....Round and round on the merry-go-round I go.
I hear you. I would start with one simple question; which viewing surface is going to get the most use? If the answer is the TV, I would focus the design on that and then figure out how the screen is secondary vs trying to give them equal importance. I know when we took that approach the solution for the screen became WAY easier (at least for us).
I've followed this build with interest. I have had similar question for combining tv and projector screen. I'm not quite able to visualize how this wall build-out helps, compared to just padding out the projector mount, roof mount or similar. So I'm looking forward to how it looks when the rest is mounted.

The money we spent on this project IS NOT indicative of what one can expect to spend on a similar project. For starters, most people will be able to buy 8 foot boards, which are substantially cheaper than 10-12 foot boards. Also, if you frame it out correctly the first time and don't have to re-do any of the work then you won't blow your budget either. If you go with traditional paint that will be a savings as well. You could totally do this build for under $1000 (USD) and still have it come out looking GREAT!

Oh man, I wish I would’ve commented on earlier videos as my father and I are a two man home av/automation team business in your area and have done so so many projects like this and know and work with a lot of good and reputable drywall/construction guys 😭 I’m glad everything worked out I the end though!
Our house came with a couple of those wall mounted, recessed TVs. Gave the TVs away, stuffed the cables in the wall, put some art there, looks fabulous with the double framing!
Great content these projects never go simply as intended. Sometimes to get what you want you need to adapt and get with plans b c or d. The fact that Kristi is happy with it along with you Is all that matters. It certainly looks clean and shoots well on camera.
Best tip we ever had from an interior designer friend - do not, repeat DO NOT, paint swatches on your walls. You'll get an idea of colour in just that one spot, in that one light, and they are a bastard to paint over if you go for a lighter colour than the swatch. Instead, buy some thick A3 sized card and paint that. Then you can move the "swatch" to different areas of the room or house, in different lights - it's amazing how colour changes even within a room - we have Farrow and Ball's Pigeon, and in different areas of the room it goes from a green, to a grey to a bluey-green colour.
Don't worry about it taking way too much time, the most nonsensical things always take the longest in newly bought houses for some reason. The end results look really good! Question for a future video, what would you suspect happens if you had four of those Lii Audio speakers for a surround sound setup? I am super B&O biased and own basically all of it, but those speakers look very intriguing to me and I kind of desire them now lol. Very much looking forward to that review! Enjoy the process! We want to see more of the build ;)
Looks great. As to your story, such is the joy of home ownership. You can only laugh at situations like that. Better than being mad. Not AV related, but I recently had raccoons rip a bunch of the siding off my house, rip through into my attic through there, and start trashing everything. Of course, since my house is old, matching siding wasn’t really available, and then my wife wanted something new, so these freaking raccoons caused me to have to pay to get all the siding on my house redone. 😄 I was going to spend that money on one of those fancy new large OLED tvs 😩
Beautiful! building the house of your dreams is sometimes very tiring and time consuming but in the end you can enjoy all the results. If there's one thing I've learned is never compromise and always choose what you really want.ENJOY✌

No question this was a move in the right direction. I have been contemplating this type of wall myself. It will be a few years before I tackle this as I'm waiting for an affordable 100+ inch tv.

Andrew and Kristi, you have a lot of patience. I just set my TV on a big diy stand. I just don't have the drive to do what you did. As for the acoustical problems, I ran into that. Due to my lack of drive, I just threw down a big rug in my room and it solved my problem. Maybe you can borrow a big rug that can fill most of the room and see if that solves the problem.

As you probably learned, cheap isn't always cheap. I've done some projects myself, but I can attest that the finish work can make or break a project. A lot depends on your choices for shades of paint and the texture you want to achieve. Your finished product looks great, but this learning experience should help you make better decisions in the rest of the work to come. There are reasons why companies are thriving doing this type of work. I look forward to seeing your future videos.
I really think it looks nice. It's a cozy space, but the acoustic treatment is going to bring it to the next level and my goal is for no one to be aware treatments are even in the room.
Great work👏🏽. I thought of building something similar. If I will do that it would look like a stone wall. If I ever get crazy and think that I need a projector it’s a must😀. My last task of updating the living room was the TV shelf. The top of the IKEA bench was too small for the equipment. So I got a wooden board from a local hardware store and cut some holes for cable management and ambient light in it, applied some paint, took the old boards on top off and mounted the bigger board. Looks like from the store and the right space for everything😃

Thanks for the video and the wall looks amazing. We have a similar feature wall in our room and it reminds me of the nightmare we had with our house builder. We designed our lounge to have access to the feature wall from behind via a cupboard door in the hall way, that way we could house all the infrastructure for networking kit as well as the amp, gaming consoles and media centre kit. After giving the measurements and plans to the carpenter he proceeded to build the wall perfectly to the measurements we provided...trouble is our hole for the TV to recess into was literally just that a HOLE! So we basically had a serving hatch in our lounge which if the TV could magically float in mid air would have looked great...So after a few choice words to the carpenter he then built a frame from the inside of the cupboard so that we could have a back to our hole in which to mount the TV on. Looking forward to your sound proofing project 🙂
I did something similar 10 years ago now but in MDF. At some places the MDF is double thickness to avoid vibration. Very heavy construction. I made an extra space below the TV for the sound bar. The subwoofer is invisibly mounted against the wall behind the TV. More above the TV actually.
I think it looks awesome! I just got a great idea for a setup like this. Have the projector screen on a track that goes up like a one piece garage door. Wouldn't be as clean as your setup now but would be really cool.
I’m a GC specializing in high end retail. The lime wash stuff was hilarious to me. So many clients want limewash and it truly is very subtle. I kinda like it though lol.
I did the same thing about 6 months ago. My TV seems to have very similar clearances to the edge as yours. One thing I did notice though...after I installed...was in the TV manual the TV is meant to have a 4 inch clearance around all edges to allow for heat. Ehh.. I just ignored that and it seems fine...so far.
I was wondering if Andrew walked about heat in another video. It’s always my first concern with anything I use that have a hole/vent on the back of an alcove. Wonder if Andrew did any checks around that.

I've never been a fan of how TVs look wall mounted, so my 77" is on a solid oak sideboard cupboard. But I like the look of it recessed so you've given me an idea when I get my next TV which will be 85"
Looks really good and you're giving me ideas. With such a setup one could add sliding or folding acoustic treatment (diffusers) as doors on the wall in front of the tv. Hmmmn...
Super cool project can't wait to see more. Thanks for the great videos. I'm actually a blind audio file and just purchased a new house last year that I have been making upgrades similar to this with. Haven't been able to find a contractor anywhere in my town because I think the local college pretty much takes them all up. Therefore I've had to roll up by sleeves and do a lot of things myself like running speaker wire through the wall and getting Network equipment closer to viewing and gaming areas. They're definitely some things coming up where I'm going to need a contractor though because those talking levels for the blind are literally $1,000. I don't think my wife would appreciate me cutting a rhombus in the wall lol
The room has been acoustically measured before and after the installation of the bump out, and the change is negligible. If anything, the bump out improved things more than it hurt them. But the front wall build out is not complete so stay tuned...
Looks good! Just one little thing about a tv and contrast. Darkness around your tv doesn’t give you more contrast. To achieve more contrast you should add led strips with 6500K light at the back of your tv. Read in to it, has something to do with the natural restraints of our eyes.

Reminds me of the time a friend of my wife wanted a room redone in her house. She was hell bent on getting it done that week. My wife said if you could wait one week, my husband could do it. Of couse she hired someone to get ot done that week and she was very unhappy with the quality of work. In hindsight, she would have waited one week. Haste makes waste.
Looks great and I think it cost you reasonable amount of money. I had guys at my place to do similar wall for about $1k, it was horribly done, I showed them the door and did it myself. It took two weeks but in the end everyone was happy

The center channel placement has been designed to work sitting atop our concrete AV shelf just below the TV.
I feel you man. We just built a new house and for the better part of two years now (house plans for living room were centered around being able to do this). I have been through so many design iterations to be able to figure out how to do a TV for daily viewing but then a projector screen for movie nights(every weekend) and I have yet to settle on a design. I have a full woodshop and also run 3D CAD for a living so I have the resources to DIY it all. I just can't freaking decide what set up. All the pros and cons keep me from making a decision and sticking to it. I am leaning TV Lift the TV down into a cabinet and have a fixed screen on the wall behind it but the 75" TV and only 8 foot ceilings make it less than ideal. I can cut an opening in the floor and have the TV go down between the joists (boxed in) and that gives me room, but part of that just seems crazy. lol. Then there is the long throw PJ vs UST and the costs associated. Drop down tab tensioned vs fixed screen....Round and round on the merry-go-round I go.
I hear you. I would start with one simple question; which viewing surface is going to get the most use? If the answer is the TV, I would focus the design on that and then figure out how the screen is secondary vs trying to give them equal importance. I know when we took that approach the solution for the screen became WAY easier (at least for us).
I've followed this build with interest. I have had similar question for combining tv and projector screen.
I'm not quite able to visualize how this wall build-out helps, compared to just padding out the projector mount, roof mount or similar.
So I'm looking forward to how it looks when the rest is mounted.

The money we spent on this project IS NOT indicative of what one can expect to spend on a similar project. For starters, most people will be able to buy 8 foot boards, which are substantially cheaper than 10-12 foot boards. Also, if you frame it out correctly the first time and don't have to re-do any of the work then you won't blow your budget either. If you go with traditional paint that will be a savings as well. You could totally do this build for under $1000 (USD) and still have it come out looking GREAT!

I think it just the right amount of inspired craziness that in the long run came out fine, and the Beautiful goddess that is your soulmate didn’t have to put you in the dog house is always a good result. Your a lucky and a better man for having her to share your passion with.
Looks great! And hey I don’t blame Andrew for “delegating” stuff like yard work. I do the same. When you get to our age you just don’t feel like giving up your weekends to projects. Not to mention the soreness and frustration that comes with them.

Our house came with a couple of those wall mounted, recessed TVs. Gave the TVs away, stuffed the cables in the wall, put some art there, looks fabulous with the double framing!
Great content these projects never go simply as intended. Sometimes to get what you want you need to adapt and get with plans b c or d. The fact that Kristi is happy with it along with you Is all that matters. It certainly looks clean and shoots well on camera.
Best tip we ever had from an interior designer friend - do not, repeat DO NOT, paint swatches on your walls. You'll get an idea of colour in just that one spot, in that one light, and they are a bastard to paint over if you go for a lighter colour than the swatch. Instead, buy some thick A3 sized card and paint that. Then you can move the "swatch" to different areas of the room or house, in different lights - it's amazing how colour changes even within a room - we have Farrow and Ball's Pigeon, and in different areas of the room it goes from a green, to a grey to a bluey-green colour.
Don't worry about it taking way too much time, the most nonsensical things always take the longest in newly bought houses for some reason. The end results look really good! Question for a future video, what would you suspect happens if you had four of those Lii Audio speakers for a surround sound setup? I am super B&O biased and own basically all of it, but those speakers look very intriguing to me and I kind of desire them now lol. Very much looking forward to that review!

Not AV related, but I recently had raccoons rip a bunch of the siding off my house, rip through into my attic through there, and start trashing everything. Of course, since my house is old, matching siding wasn’t really available, and then my wife wanted something new, so these freaking raccoons caused me to have to pay to get all the siding on my house redone. 😄
I was going to spend that money on one of those fancy new large OLED tvs 😩

No question this was a move in the right direction. I have been contemplating this type of wall myself. It will be a few years before I tackle this as I'm waiting for an affordable 100+ inch tv.

Andrew and Kristi, you have a lot of patience. I just set my TV on a big diy stand. I just don't have the drive to do what you did. As for the acoustical problems, I ran into that. Due to my lack of drive, I just threw down a big rug in my room and it solved my problem. Maybe you can borrow a big rug that can fill most of the room and see if that solves the problem.

Those speakers low-key stole the show
As you probably learned, cheap isn't always cheap. I've done some projects myself, but I can attest that the finish work can make or break a project. A lot depends on your choices for shades of paint and the texture you want to achieve. Your finished product looks great, but this learning experience should help you make better decisions in the rest of the work to come. There are reasons why companies are thriving doing this type of work. I look forward to seeing your future videos.

My last task of updating the living room was the TV shelf. The top of the IKEA bench was too small for the equipment. So I got a wooden board from a local hardware store and cut some holes for cable management and ambient light in it, applied some paint, took the old boards on top off and mounted the bigger board. Looks like from the store and the right space for everything😃

Thanks for the video and the wall looks amazing. We have a similar feature wall in our room and it reminds me of the nightmare we had with our house builder. We designed our lounge to have access to the feature wall from behind via a cupboard door in the hall way, that way we could house all the infrastructure for networking kit as well as the amp, gaming consoles and media centre kit. After giving the measurements and plans to the carpenter he proceeded to build the wall perfectly to the measurements we provided...trouble is our hole for the TV to recess into was literally just that a HOLE! So we basically had a serving hatch in our lounge which if the TV could magically float in mid air would have looked great...So after a few choice words to the carpenter he then built a frame from the inside of the cupboard so that we could have a back to our hole in which to mount the TV on.

I did something similar 10 years ago now but in MDF. At some places the MDF is double thickness to avoid vibration. Very heavy construction. I made an extra space below the TV for the sound bar. The subwoofer is invisibly mounted against the wall behind the TV. More above the TV actually.

I think it looks awesome! I just got a great idea for a setup like this. Have the projector screen on a track that goes up like a one piece garage door. Wouldn't be as clean as your setup now but would be really cool.

I’m a GC specializing in high end retail. The lime wash stuff was hilarious to me. So many clients want limewash and it truly is very subtle. I kinda like it though lol.
I did the same thing about 6 months ago. My TV seems to have very similar clearances to the edge as yours. One thing I did notice though...after I installed...was in the TV manual the TV is meant to have a 4 inch clearance around all edges to allow for heat. Ehh.. I just ignored that and it seems fine...so far.
I was wondering if Andrew walked about heat in another video. It’s always my first concern with anything I use that have a hole/vent on the back of an alcove.
Wonder if Andrew did any checks around that.

I've never been a fan of how TVs look wall mounted, so my 77" is on a solid oak sideboard cupboard. But I like the look of it recessed so you've given me an idea when I get my next TV which will be 85"
Looks really good and you're giving me ideas. With such a setup one could add sliding or folding acoustic treatment (diffusers) as doors on the wall in front of the tv. Hmmmn...

Super cool project can't wait to see more. Thanks for the great videos. I'm actually a blind audio file and just purchased a new house last year that I have been making upgrades similar to this with. Haven't been able to find a contractor anywhere in my town because I think the local college pretty much takes them all up. Therefore I've had to roll up by sleeves and do a lot of things myself like running speaker wire through the wall and getting Network equipment closer to viewing and gaming areas. They're definitely some things coming up where I'm going to need a contractor though because those talking levels for the blind are literally $1,000. I don't think my wife would appreciate me cutting a rhombus in the wall lol
It looks so good the effort is well worth it.
Be aware, that the "bumpout" will be a resonance chamber, articulating certain frequencies when assessing hifi gear.
The room has been acoustically measured before and after the installation of the bump out, and the change is negligible. If anything, the bump out improved things more than it hurt them. But the front wall build out is not complete so stay tuned...

Looks good! Just one little thing about a tv and contrast. Darkness around your tv doesn’t give you more contrast.
To achieve more contrast you should add led strips with 6500K light at the back of your tv. Read in to it, has something to do with the natural restraints of our eyes.

Reminds me of the time a friend of my wife wanted a room redone in her house. She was hell bent on getting it done that week. My wife said if you could wait one week, my husband could do it. Of couse she hired someone to get ot done that week and she was very unhappy with the quality of work. In hindsight, she would have waited one week. Haste makes waste.
Looks great and I think it cost you reasonable amount of money.
I had guys at my place to do similar wall for about $1k, it was horribly done, I showed them the door and did it myself. It took two weeks but in the end everyone was happy
