We're back at it again. We got some even more NieR iceberg facts that are guaranteed to make you scratch your chin. Anyways, let's do (another) deep dive and figure out some stuff we never even knew we wanted to. We got some primo wacky stuff in this one, so enjoy! I feel like the asterisks are everything and nothing at the same time. That if we could magically remove them it would be flashing between the words “kill,” “fuck,” “love,” “free,” and so on to reflect 9S’s confusion on the whole thing

I basically just wrote the same thing before I saw this comment, but I 100% agree. Emotions aren't polarized - multiple can occur at once.
That goes back to what Yoko Taro has said about games in general; it's not the game itself that's important, but what's in the players minds and hearts.
Apparently in the other translations of the game, the amount of asterisks always match up to their corresponding f word, but not always for kill, love, or free.
Could be "free" as in if she's dead, she's free

okay so from what I understand of Nier as a collective is that if Yoko Taro ever releases a NieR cerial, every box will have one letter scribbled on the bottom of the box and if/when you put every letter together you get a 32 digit code that you then have to plug into a weird gatcha game, that will then lead you to the ultimate question, behind the ultimate question you'll find out 2B's favorite dog breed

The irony about the free/kill 2B idea is that depending on how you look at it, they mean the exact same thing... Killing 2B would free her from this endless cycle of having to basically 50 first dates 9S with a blade... Save, free, kill etc etc it's all up to our personal interpretation but the beauty of it is, all those interpretations essentially mean the exact same thing... Even F**K can mean the same thing within this context... Yoko is truly a genius of gaming and language
Personally I want to believe that the **** is not to censored and hide the word from us but to show that the word has no single meaning. Its all canon, 9s wants to Kill 2B, Hate 2B, Free 2B, Love 2B. He feels all of those emotions and cant comprehend it.

It’s interesting that in ending C and D of Replicant, Nier Bro also has to make a choice in terms of killing Kaine (and ‘free’ing her from her suffering) or saving her, which would end his own life.

On the concept of "wizards" during the western comic point, during Replicant, Weiss and Nier discuss "Warp magic" to alleviate the pain of walking everywhere. Weiss then goes on to mention that the sages that attempted such devilry didn't really succeed very well, and that walking was an excellent choice. Now Weiss could have just said 'sage' as in a smart person (ironic considering the outcome of said supposed smart person warping), but I'd like to think there was some element of 'wizardry' during the 2000s in Nier as a result of the Maso particle.

I'd always assumed the missing informant was one of the dead androids at the tunnel before Adam, specifically the one you can interact with.
I think the asterisks could be all the answers depending on which "version" of 9S it is. My theory is each of the 48 9S had their own word fitting in that space from "kill" to "love" to "free" etc.

I think the four asterisks are supposed to be kill, but are censored so it could also be a jab at the audience who undoubtedly would smash.
It’s the most reinforced theory, as 9S is depicted killing versions of 2B multiple times later in the game. The two I can remember and I think the only instances are where he’s attacked by like 20 2B’s in the tower and kills them all while screaming like a mad man. The second time is in the soul(?) box, where he’s stabbing the thing (I forgot what) while hacking it from outside, and it turns into 2B, and 9S keeps stabbing it over and over while crying.
I mean it could theoretically be anything, but It’s a lot more likely it was foreshadowing for 9S more than likely subconsciously knowing 2B has killed him multiple times, combined with starting to go insane because of seeing 2B die, losing his reason to fight the machines, and eventually getting the logic virus thru 2B’s arm, and getting those emotions intertwined with his love for her.
But I support the “free” theory as well, because of one line in automata. In the fight I mentioned earlier where 9S has to fight a bunch of 2B’s, he says something along the lines of “it’s going to be okay 2B, I’m going to kill you now!”. This could be his “logical” way to free her. He knows he is going to die, and he wants to “free” her and take her with him, even though she is already dead.
It’s hard to figure out the logic of someone who’s gone insane, but I think this is about as close as we can get.
God that is poetic and depressing, another reason why Nier:Automata is my favorite game

Free makes sense. Going in dark i felt like the first play through has that feeling that 9s starts feeling bad for the robots and doesn’t want a war to continue and that’s part of the reason he start snooping around in the yorha data base to find out why they are still fighting and he obviously cares for 2b and wants her to be free from the fighting too
FFXIV's last NieR crossover raid came out . . and it had MAJOR references and all but one of them was really interesting to me. The final boss in the raid is a direct reference to the final boss of Drakengard 1, Queen Beast . . or Drakengard 3, Flower [or both]. Red Girl [N2] basically transforms into something akin to those two called "Her Inflorescence" But to what extent / how is Red Girl knowledgable about the watchers, as she is able to replicate or imitate those bosses.
Also -please- do a review on that quest series specifically at some point, it's amazing. I honestly only bought FFXIV solely for the NieR content and I did not regret it at all. There are so many tiny details and nuances to it.

Man, we need to compile the whole ordeal of Nier + Drakengard to figure out everything, because YIKES it is hard to access a lot of this stuff.
18:40 Doesn't the flying robot type that you mow down in Shmup sections level scale as well? I remember being level 99 and going through the Dark Colossus fight over the ocean and all the little flyers were level 99.
I agree with you that we're not meant to know what verb nines wants to do to 2B, but I also agree with Clemps that it's most likely BOTH kill and fuck, if it had to be anything

Strangely i watched part 1 yesterday, really enjoyed it and when you said you gona do part 2, I was like I hope he does. I opened youtube it was recommended to watch, uploaded 27 hours ago. Finished the game today everything 100% except fishing & the third coliseum in the forest. I wish they make a sequel, platinum games is a must, Yoko Taro is genuis indeed, but it all stops at platinum games they nailed it, never had this much fun since Super Metroid, Mario 64, Ace Combat 3 electrosphere J version, Metal Gear Solid PS1 & Ace Combat Zero The Belkan War.
I'm hoping we get to see more of NieR as well. Replicant Remaster drops in 3 weeks!

I’m surprised nobody has ever mentioned the parallels the game has to WWII, such as the war starting in 11939 and ending in 1945, the flight unit having the same name as and looking like (from the top) the Ho229, a Nazi experimental figher plane, the STG rifles everywhere in the camp, just to name a few of the many that are there.

I think that is also one of the last sentences in ending E, said by a pod?
I played ending E, nuked my safefile, restarted a new safe file and 2B said the same thing a pod had said mere minutes ago.
Also, 2B says she wants to kill whatever god forced this fate on her (which doesn't make sense at the time as you have just started the game) which directly ties in with the 'weight of the world' song (English version) where she asks god why he has to make her suffer so.
YES!!! I knew the answer was animals! I never really checked their levels but subconsciously found it wierd that they take so many bloody hits from you no matter how overpowered you are.

That's actually because the animals aren't an enemy, they're a mount. And since they serve as a weapon as well, they have to be scaled to the player character to be viable.
watching my friends play the replicant remaster along with this video, ive learned that boars are the true antagonists of the nier series. also great vid! lots of interesting stuff, just when you think you’ve heard everything about this franchise you learn something new
my assumption of the original box art is that it depicts the outcomes of ending e? the characters have rose above the cycle of death and destruction, so that’s a hopeful thing, but 9s is somehow broken and a2 just walks a separate path from 2b and 9s
Most of the shmup segments have level scaling. Real-time level scaling too, if you level up during them all the enemies immediately level up with you even the ones that are already on screen.

With the ending of the new arc of Reincarnation, it makes me wonder if that game takes place 500 years after Automata and the android in black is 10H and her new party members.
Wasn't the original NieR supposed to have no connection to Drakengard and some somber game about fairy tales but later got changed, hence the names for the bosses? And wasn't SINoALICE supposed to be the game NieR originally intended to be but Taro decided to change it into it being the remaining human memories that are stored in the server but have to relive their life over and over again until they're put into androids or replicants / new humans?
Wait, are you sure that first plotline in Automata about the missing informant? The commander asks 2B and 9S to do some recon, and then also look for the missing contact. So they go do recon in the desert, have the boss fight with Adam, then report back, after which they go to the Amusement park and fight Beauvoir/Simone, who's been eating/killing YoRHa androids. I thought the implication was that the informant was one of the poor androids she ended up killing?
The party wasn't a trio because I count Weiss as a party member even if he's bound to Nier. His verbous input and relationship with the other three is enough to solidify him as one of the group. Hes not like Tyrann and only heard by Kainé, so Tryann wouldn't count

Why would NieR without Emil be weird? It’s not like he’s a supremely powerful magical weapon with borderline immortality. He never even does anything of any significance in either game especially during the alien invasion of 5012. I could see him being relevant if during the alien invasion he’d done something drastic like idk making around 85 million copies of himself to fight but he never does.

I think the four asterisks is intentionally left that way because there isn't supposed to be just one word that could fit there. In my opinion, I think kill, free, fuck, love, etc. are ALL appropriate answers, and can all be true simultaneously. Emotions are complicated, and Automata goes to great lengths to show that decidedly inorganic androids can develop feelings that are just as complex as any human's - "humanity" is not truly lost because it lives on within the androids (and the machines, to some degree). People can have mixed feelings, so I don't see why 9S couldn't have felt all of those things about 2B at the same time.

Not sure if this fits with the "scaling" topic but I've seen a pair of robots in the abandoned factory who are level 99. I was at that level too when I first found them so idk if they scale when you're lower but that encounter just felt so random. They're just in a secluded corner you wouldn't normally go to, and it's kinda dark there during route C/D so if you don't have the flashlight on you'd be surprised you suddenly got one-shotted by a normal looking mob.

Every machine has one "treasure". Adam has hate. 9S tells him they are nothing alike.
Androids have the machine core based black boxes so the "treasure" thing applies.
Maybe it's "censored" because Adam doesn't want/can't get himself to say what is his "opposite" thing.
And/or the whole no emotions allowed thing might explain why it's displayed censored and why 9S doesn't already think that he does love her (by that point he probably has thought about the 2E thing and how having emotions and not actively pushing them down might be a bad idea...including because time together would be ending).
Also all of these machines/androids/pods need enough time and memories/experiences to develop proper sentience or at least better/full understanding of emotions (A2 also finally sees the world as beautiful). Adam in one of the endings has let go of the hate "treasure". 9S goes from something vague, to thinking he wants to love, to loving (or realizing he did), through a lot of bad stuff including hate before also being...ok/at-some-sort-of-peace-or-acceptance/understanding (or dead, or on the Ark but still after understanding).
Even N2 needed to have all those processes open at the same time to change their mind (or achieve their goal of being free of the command from the aliens).
2B has...duty? She hated killing 9S models but kept doing it for different reasons (first YoRHa then also her promise to one of the Nines).

My second theory is that this endless cycle 2B is one in which Drakengard and NieR are both sequels and prequels simultaneously. One leads to the other and then the other loops back to NieR endlessly until hopefully 2B and 9S break the cycle or Accord stops it from repeating forever. The ark that goes into space could somehow lead to Drakengard and the "futuristic" city in Drakengard and Drakengard leads to NieR through Angelus. I have this one more fleshed out but, I'm tired so I will leave it at that for now. I do believe there are things in the timeline that also seem to point to the ideas I've mentioned. If anybody could provide clarity to these possibly silly ideas, that would be great.

So in ending A when you fight eve, was it just me, or did he act very similar to the shadow lord? They both were enraged about their sibling, the fights themselves acted similar, and eve has a scrap of metal on his right side acting as a book, weiss sacrifices himself and 9s does a similar action to disarm him. And the final stage is similar as they're both chaotically throwing balls at you, and the finishing scene is similar too. It might be a reach, but I wonder if eve was trying to mimic the shadow lord or is somehow a reincarnation of them

What about the proposed Vita port that would have combined both Replicant and Gestalt into one story? It was one of two projects that studio Orca was looking at, but they ended up working on Dragon Quest X instead. No work was ever really done and I don't think we'll ever know what it really could have been, but it's interesting to think about.

I feel like there's simply too much 'bonus' high school related paraphernalia to just dismiss offhand as being inconsequential. there is definitely going to be something that takes place mostly normally in a high school setting, until the students start exhibiting magic powers.

I'm going to go one step further and say drakenguard is probably the isekai world you get sent to once you die in NieR, when you get run over by a truck at an intersection.
and so the penultimate conclusive work of multimedia fiction for the NieR/Drackenguard will be set in a high school with magic, before the kids get reincarnated/summoned to isekai/otherworld/draconguard world in the ultimate conclusive multimedia work of fiction, with orchestral music, mandatory attendence stage plays, drama CD's, Web novels, light novels, manga, anime, LIVE ACTION tv shows/movies. and part of the main storyline will be delivered via radio, not FM, cause that would make sense, instead you need to erect your own CB tower antennae and tune into short wave radio.

The philosophy in the game incourages you to decide meaning for yourself so looking for the "true" meaning of anything ambiguous is pointless, especially when the philosophy teaches you that tracing back the diffinition of all the different interpretations lead to the same thing. That makes everything meaningless or meaningful... u decide.

I don't even like iceberg vids and I haven't even beat Nier Automata because I'm a noob boomer, but I consume these vids like a hoard of hungry locusts. What's goin on with your excellent Japanese pronunciation and possible ability to read the language? How do you even do that?? Sorry I can't understand any theories in the yt , i just finished ending e in nier automata yesterday then i desperate to know what happen to 2b , 9s , a2 after ending e , so i search all theories or continues of the game but still not understand..... Am i dumb or i supposed to play all the games to understand? Plss help me

I swear there are flashes of writing and other things during the time where you have to get 2B to haul ass before she shuts down.... you have a date with A2 after all, and no one is really taking the time to go "What is on my screen", even I was like "I Don't have time for this shit" till I thought back on it.
End of level one it says that Nier and 2B have the same bedroom, but that's not Nier's room. It's Yonah's room. Nier's bed is downstairs by the kitchen. 2B and Yonah have the same bedroom.

for the asterisks, in my opinion i think its free. before i saw this i thought the missing word was kill but free makes alot more sense. not only was it in reincarnation but if it was "kill" why would 9s be as mad as he was towards a2 in route c? i mean he could have mixed feelings about wanting to kill her if it was, but as a major theme in nier automata is never ending cycles, free most likely refers to that and how he wants to free her from the cycle of killing him.
im not completely sure of this and all the words people have suggested makes a ton of sense narrative wise but these are just my thoughts on it
