    Murray was not a player that I admired when he was in his prime and within the Big 4, but the demonstration of improvement despite the pain after the retirement announcement, his struggle and the nostalgia for being what he once knew to be makes me a fan of him today. Very happy for him.

    I rarely rooted for Murray against other top players in his prime, but I find myself wanting him to win all the time now. I never really appreciated all of his achievements before like all the Masters titles, obviously doing well at grand slams for a long time, olympic golds, number 1. He's an absolute legend and I wish it didn't take me this long to appreciate him more. I've always liked watching the older players past their prime resurging and beating the younger guys. After all of last years retirements I find I'm clinging to the few players still hanging on like Murray, Wawrinka, Isner, Verdasco, Gasquet, and Lopez who is retiring.

    Now I understand why some people include Murray as part of Big 4. Yes he only has 3 Grand Slams but the sheer number of finals he has played and gotten so close so many times and the way he is still fighting at this age after a hip surgery, I say Big 4. Huge respect to Murray after being 2 sets down at age 36 with a repaired hip. Wow, just Wow.

    • @sh4wz0r
      @sh4wz0r ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The term 'Big 4' existed to describe a period when the four of them were absolutely dominating the sport for a few years. It was never meant to suggest that Murray quite belongs in the bracket that the other three do and it has nothing to do with the heroics he's performing now, no matter how impressive they are

    • @SenseiDenax

      @@sh4wz0r Big 4 started when Murray and Djokovic were tied in terms of records but far behind Nadal and Federer

    • @sh4wz0r
      @sh4wz0r ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SenseiDenax Yes, you're right I'm revising history a bit there. Still, I stand by saying it refers to an era of collective dominance by the four rather than the more permanent GOAT grouping of the 'big 3' which is commonly used today. So, Murray impressing everyone with a metal hip at an advanced age doesn't in any way affect the validity of the 'big 4' grouping, because the big 4 describes a past era which his current exploits do not affect.

    • @lolipedofin
      @lolipedofin ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@sh4wz0r Just to expand a bit, Fedal was coined when Nadal was behind Federer by quite a margin, but he was beating Federer a lot, and the two very obviously dominated the sport at the time.
      It became big four when the duopoly of the sport became an olygopoly of four, at that time Nadal was already a legend mentioned in the same breath as Federer while Djokovic and Murray are pretenders far behind the two, but the four completely shut down the rest in masters and path to grand slam semifinals. It was a parallel drawn to the premier league big four during the time Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool dominated the league and Champions league end stages.
      Big Three is an acknowledgment of the legacy in progress of currently built by Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, it's no longer about the domination of the sport, tournament by tournament, but about who will retire with most GS. The three are the Olympian gods, above mere mortals, while Murray was humanity greatest heroes, the Hercules or Achilles, the best of the rest who dared to duked it out with the gods and at times came out victorious.

      @@sh4wz0rdamn wtf is your beef. Usopen page showed a stat, forgot what it was… maybe wins over top 10 players in a grand slam or masters, whatever. Point is, the top four was in the hundreds for wins, and the next highest had like teens. It was staggering the difference. Like I’ve never even been a Murray fan, but in that moment I had to say - top 4.
      There are a lot of other stats besides grand slams that highlights how there is in fact a top 4. At least for this past era.
      Stop being a fucking hater

I honestly had written him out, not because I didn’t believe he had the tools to win, but because I thought Kokkinakis had the edge in terms of momentum. He was running all over the court, hunting down balls like he was 26, making crazy winners!! The level of talent was insane. He was aggressive, hard -hitting and competitive till the end, and Kokkikannis was no pushover. Extraordinary, skilled tennis from both. I've been a huge Murray fan since his Wimbledon match vs Wawrinka in 2009. I don't how far he can go with this revival, but with Djokovic still dominating tennis at the same age, I gotta believe Murray has it in him to put one more slam in the trophy cabinet. Even if it's a Goran Ivanisevic-style surprise run. Regardless, I'm happy to see him playing again.

    Never mind the big names missing at this AO, there have been plenty of mens men's finals that were Djoker snoozefests. This was epic. Seriously, one of the best matches I can remember at AO. Meltdowns boilovers and Murray winning from the brink of defeat. He's virtually had a hip replacement! Kokki should take a lot from this, he could be a top line player.
