  • Vitamin A Poisoning from Cod Liver Oil?
Some literature and articles indicate a possible vitamin A toxicity (hypervitaminosis A) from consuming cod liver oil. Cod liver oil is consumed for omega 3, vitamin A, and vitamin D. In this talk we will go over the possibility of the toxicity from the cod liver oil and review some literature.

The frustrating thing about RDA is it's the *minimum* for a healthy person on a healthy diet.
I would rather see a range with an upper level limit than going off the RDA.
Thank you for all the info!

@@DrBeenMedicalLectures Cool! Try and find some clinical trials, because I think the one on cyclists isn't good. Those who take cod liver oil may do it because they intend to lower their inflammation. And these people may attempt to lower it in with other methods too, so we don't know which method we are measuring.

Dr Been, I've been listening to Dr Garrett Smith over at NutriDetect, and he explains that Vitamin A is really not a vitamin and harms the liver which is forced to store it. Great to see that you are also covering some of the literature he reviewed.

When I was a small child, I loved fish...the fishier, the better. My mom never had any trouble giving me cod liver oil!
Trouble was, I knew that my mom kept the bottle in the fridge, so when she wasn't looking, I'd sneak a swig out of the bottle.
She caught me doing it one time and was worried that I might have Vit. A poisoning, so she spoke to my doctor. The doctor just told her to hide the bottle where I couldn't get my grubby little hands on it.
I'm over 70 now, with no major health issues so far...and I still love fishy fish and take a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day. 😄

You're the first person I met loving cod liver oil lol When I was a child I also remember taking it, I remember it perfectly because it made me vomit, but I only remember one occasion, could it be because I was sick? or as my mom saw that I had problems taking it raw, maybe she started putting it in my drink or food 😁

@@DrBeenMedicalLectures Kids will find sweets no matter what they are or where you hide them.
The cod liver oil was nothing compared to the ExLax I stole when I was 4 or 5. Used to see my uncle take it out of the medicine cabinet, so one day, I dragged a chair to the bathroom sink, climbed up and got that big box and ate it all.
My mom was in the other room and luckily, I showed her the package and said "Mommy, look at the good chocolate I ate!". She almost died! She grabbed me by the hand and ran to a doctor's office around the block. The doctor told her to get me to the hospital immediately, so he called a taxi and off we went. Got to the emergency room, where the doctors grabbed me and pumped my stomach out. Boy...did I scream! 🤣🤣
Guess they got it all out, since I didn't have any after-effects that I recall, but it didn't stop me from pilfering things that I shouldn't have...like swigging the cod liver oil...or swigging the bottle of blackberry brandy that my aunt kept in a cabinet over the fridge for 'medicinal purposes' in case she got a cold. Also got caught doing that and got a few hard slaps and a lecture about not stealing after her hand got tired. 😂😂

@@HiroshimaMS My dad was Italian...and an excellent cook. He made a lot of seafood dishes, so I learned to love fish at an early age. In those days...in the 50s...we lived in NYC and there was the Fulton Fish Market with all sorts of delicious, fresh fish, clams, mussels, scallops, etc...and it all was really cheap, so we ate a lot of seafood. 😄😄
I'm not adverse to a nice juicy steak though...right off the charcoal grill! 🤣🤣

They just wanted a negative headline about cod liver oil because that's an old and effective folk health supplement that can't be patented.

Great subject. I’ve read up on for yrs. I’ll prob take it in sml doses (then off to clear it) as my parents did (I’m 50.) Like most things in health esp diet and supplements trends go from must have/do thru mass media and monetizing, then debated to caution or neutral at best as good independent data finally comes out or not ignored. I learned about dangers of antioxidants w/non whole food form in university 20+ yrs ago but too much profit.

I love, love, love, the knowledge you share. ❤️ i would like to know who needs more vitamin A. Do people with asthma benefit from more vitamin A? Do women post menopause with vaginal dryness benefit? Also, I tremendously appreciate the studies, i would like to share with my provider. Please provide links to the studies so I dont have to screenshot the video to look them up. Im not lazy, just efficient! Thank you so very much.

Dr Been, I cannot comprehend how a 4 year old can eat all those cups of vegetables and fruit when a normal child picks at food. I'm wondering if these were concentrated in smoothies and if adults are at the same risk.
