I saw Gene Pitney in person with his show on 5_17_66 at Salina,Kansas's Memorial Hall along with some other rock stars of that era. He was the head liner of The Gene Pitney Show. So listening to this song by Gene Pitney brings back the memories for me when i was a teenage girl in the mid sixties. Thanks for sharing the video.
I'm glad to find this song again. It was on my favorites list, and then got deleted. Even though this song was written back in the 60's, I'm sure a lot of people today could relate to it. It's probably the most brutally honest song about unrequited love I've ever heard.
Pitney (1940-2006) affected a bit of a Southern twang in his singing, although he was from Connecticut. Well, it worked for him. Love this song! My favorite of his.
Hey man i have to say this song will never get old man, I mean like when i was in high school in the 60's me and my dizzy cross eyed blue eyed bloned would go to Kibby's drive in restraunt in my 56' Merc. two door and have way too much fun wish i could go back man oh yeah this was in Redwood City Calif. luv ya all, Ron
Gene Pitney was born on 2/.17/1941 in Hartford Ct. and died on April 5th, 2006. He was married to Lynne Gayton and they had 3 sons. He had 11 singles, four of them in the top ten. Town without pity is another favorite of mine.
It wasn't recorded at RCA's studios so thats why Neil couldn't release it. He re-recorded it there, but it wasn't nearly as good. I wouldn't be surprised if thats Neil signing the harmony vocals.
I have become to perfectly recorded and produced stereo music that I sometimes forget to listen to the song. This doesn't happen with this good ol' 45 of this great song. Now on to the next one...This is too fun...
Listen good..... you will hear Neil Sedaka"s voice. Neil Sedaka was suppose to sing this song first. There was some dispute between the producers or managers and Gene Pitney was told to sing over Neil's voice

I'm 40, and I love this song. I was no stranger to unrequited love as a teenager, and I can tell from the lyrics, I wasn't the only one.
Thank you

Neil Sedaka's regular songwriters.

It's probably the most relatable song about love that I've ever heard.
another one I can sing all the words too. Now if I can only remember what I did yesterday haha.
The late Gene Pitney lived in Connecticut-Fantastic talent!
thank you, it sounds good. Technics turntable, stanton cartridge and this is my favorite Gene Pitney song.
Exactly how that perfect song should be heard.
Thanks - sounds great. I love it when Gene rocks out & kicks butt - the whole production's awesome. Cheers, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)

Actually 1940.
@@reginascruggs3326 I'll take your word for it, and assume my source was wrong.
What makes this song even more incredible is that the backing track is from the original demo recorded by Neil Sedaka and rejected by his label.

RCA's loss was United Artists' (Musicor was a subsidiary of United Artists) gain.
WOW debuted 4yrs to the day before my birth.
Thanks so much for all your posts, love them.
From the era of vinyl and vacuum tubes!

Great song that was written by Neil Sedaka's long time lyricist Howard Greenfield.

Have you heard his version of Cara Mia that was probably more popular by Jay and the Americans?
Gene Pitney passed away a few years ago, in case you're wondering.
Gene ♡♡♡
Crisp!
Debut 8/1/1964 and peaked at #7 on the Cashbox Top 100 Singles chart.
Thank God for you, too!
Oh Yeah!
Check out the cover version done by The Shakin' Pyramids.
Listen good.....

The one song if reversed “ the only way to keep him is to keep him to myself...” would be from Miss Moneypenny to her James Bond.
Isn't that Alanis Morrisette doing harmony?
Andrew C. Yeah if she's like 75yrs old.
It's Toni Wine and Alanis Morrisette wasn't born until a decade later.
never issued in stereo.

Not produced or arranged by Neil Sedaka who arranged it.
