As a casual learner, I’d rather take it slow than forcing myself to listen to actual native speech and stressing myself out without understanding anything. Your series is unique and if people don’t find it helpful they should find something else. Keep it up! ❤️

I really appreciate the slow pace. It helps me connect the letters to the sounds. And when I was learning Spanish in high school, we listened to tapes where people spoke very slowly, just like you are doing here. So, I think your approach is just fine. 💜

People just love to tell others they're wrong, when actually bothered are so many different ways of doing things (learning, makeup, etc) that work for different people. I think this is so helpful because a lot of the time I just can't fill in certain words and it helps a lot to hear it slow.

Good lord it’s not slow enough🤣 That’s like saying the best way to teach someone to swim is by throwing them in the pool and saying ‘okay, swim!’ It’s absurd. I love these videos, keep doing it. Tack så mycket!

I definitely agree with you & what you're doing. We all know that this isn't how people natively speak, and there're plenty of videos of that if that's what we wanted. What we need is help getting used to understanding all the individual words and getting used to word order flow and how it differentiates from our native language, and doing that at a regular speaking speed is difficult when you're learning.
I'm really glad that you've got a Patreon now, and that you're sticking to this, because it really has been helping a lot in the transitional period of studying the full course in Duolingo. What I've been trying to work on is getting more used to just speaking, and this is perfect because it helps me think it through in my head at a slower pace when I'm not sure about something.
So glad these are a weekly thing now!!

I’m learning Swedish because my boyfriend is from Stockholm and I really like the language. And for me it is very helpful to hear talking someone slowly because I understand the words better and get to know how to use them. Everything else just comes by practice and after a while you feel when you can combine words while talking (ex.: vad heter det > vahetere)
Anyways, keep on doing this series. Dina videos är jättebra! :D

This helps so much! especially with reading. I have the captions on in swedish so that I can see how words are written and how they are pronounced. I treat these videos as a sing-along of sorts and it is helping my pronunciation. Especially with words like "relation" and "introduktion" which i struggle with. Thanks so much for your work, I really appreciate it!

Well it's really helping me. Everyone learns differently. Academics tend to have a set way of thinking but people with more artistic minds learn in a less rigid formal way. Speaking slower helps to distinguish each word then speed builds in time.

I realize this video is 4 years old, but it's still amazing to me people are criticizing a channel because you are speaking slowly when that is the entire point of the channel. It's like walking into a bar knowing full well that people there expect alcohol, then complaining that they serve alcohol. Those kinds of people have nothing better to do and can only feel better about themselves by tearing others down. Ignore them - I've found your videos immensely helpful, and I can understand most of what you are saying when you speak the way you do.

Katrin, you are awesome. I'm currently taking Swedish language classes at Seattle's Swedish Club and your långsam svenska videos are incredibly helpful. Regarding the criticisms that "this is not helpful at all because this is not the way people normally speak" - these cricisms are ridiculous! Uh, folks, THESE videos are targeted to BEGINNERS and THIS is how teachers in BEGINNING foreign language classes actually speak when they are teaching you to speak complete sentences - SLOWLY AND CLEARLY!
You can get the technical aspects of the language elsewhere - the consonants and vowels and their pronunciations, nouns, singular, plural, pronouns, possessives, verbs and tense, etc. But to get a good grasp on how to actually SPEAK these new words you are learning, you obviously have to begin by speaking them slowly, and Katrin's videos are an excellent resource.
If I could see the Swedish captions at the same time as the English captions then it would be nirvana! I could put the two languages together at the same time. That's the only suggestion that I have.

Your videos are helping a lot! It is more about learning vocabulary and realise how one needs to pronounce the words...Also because the videos mention that the content is covered at a slow pace kind of implies that it is not how a normal conversation between two Swedish speakers will go (people can learn so much from your lessons and then we can play some movies, music, etc to familiarise ourself with the speed of the language). Don’t concern yourself with what other people think (as a person who studied French and English in school, we focused mainly on grammar...needless to say I did not retain much and that did not prepare me for a proper conversation) so ...keep up what you are doing, I find your method much more practical and useful!

  • @vonratt

When people are first learning a language, it is important for the teacher to speak slowly and clearly, while using simple vocabulary and grammatical structures. That is why these videos so much easier to understand than a TV show or movie. You have to walk before you can run!

From my perspective, Katrin, let me tell you how incredibly useful these videos are. I live in Australia-we have a range of languages available here in Australia but only within local communities. I am not a member of any bilingual group, but I love languages and have learned to become conversationally fluent in French, Spanish and Greek, by attending uni classes and community language groups in my capital city, and by mixing with native speakers whenever possible. I know how to learn a language. I have lived in a small rural town for 29 years-away from language community resources. I am finding your videos incredibly useful and within a few hours, have developed a working knowledge of some basic Swedish, without ever hearing it before. I have also been a hearing impairment/language specialist for over 40 years and I absolutely agree that your Slow Swedish approach is superbly pedagogically supportive. I know that people speak faster, in a native speaker setting, but for sure, while I am learning from you, I am getting a superbly clear picture of how the language is constructed and pronounced. Thank you for your generosity and you inspiration.

    1. I go to SFI and even though we do learn gramatical stuff, WE LEARN BY LISTENING/TALKING. Since DAY ONE, not a single word in english was spoken by any of the teachers. It was swedish 100% of the time even though I didn't even know how to GREET is swedish. So yea, what you are doing is DEFNITELY not wrong. These fucking "language people" love to complain about things when they are just afraid you may take away their job somehow lol - which WON'T happen...
    2. I love what you're doing and YOU ARE, INDEED, HELPING ME. I even sent your videos to my SFI teacher because she tells me herself to always watch many things I possibly can in swedish. She also liked your videos. I even said to you once, in the Kat's Kompisar fb group, that I will for sure support you on patreon when I get a job.
Anyway, I am very very thankful for these videos and please, never let these damn annoying negative ass people feel like what you are doing is somehow wrong or useless because it is not. And this comes from a SWEDISH FULL TIME STUDENT. So yea, I kind of have the word here.

Have just discovered your videos and I can only echo other people's comments here - it is wonderful and very useful to listen to crystal clear Swedish spoken at a slower pace. If they find these videos not helpful then they can go and search for where it is helpful. You cannot accomodate everyone, especially those who think they can run before they learn how to walk.
I am one of those "language people" and I can tell you that this is the way and yes, this is very helpful. One learrns how to recognize sounds, words and meanings. After a few videos like this one, one will be much more able to recognize sounds in a normal swedish conversation. This builds on confidence, which in turn brings more motivation, which is the number one factor for being successful at learning.

I started learning Swedish with a teacher two weeks ago and he couldn't stress enough how important pronouciation is. He kept saying, and I agree, that if you can manage the pronounciation at a slower pace, and understand "the sound" of the language, then you can go ahead and speed up, connect words, get the flow. Until then, yes, we will talk like weird people, slowly and one word at a time, but that puts the foundation of our undestanding and speaking. So thank you for doing these videos!! Hugs from Romania :)

I studied language teaching in France. There are so many different methods each claiming to be better. The best teacher fails if the student does not care. This is why France is one of the worst countries to teach a foreign language, except adult teaching. Then, each student has its own way of learning. Don't listen to these negative people.
I love your videos. They are very helpful as I am a real beginner. They are free which is a really great as I'm learning Swedish for fun. There is this point in learning a language when you know a lot of words but can not understand spoken texts because in daily use words are connected and shortened. That makes it difficult to distinguish seperate words, and therefore hard to understand. This is exactly the point where your videos are so useful. From here you can move on to somewhat faster Swedish (like Nyheter på lätt svenska) and from there to full speed. Keep up the good work!

As a retired language teacher (French and Spanish), I can assure you that there is not just ONE way to learn a foreign language, so please totally ignore the criticism. You're doing the right thing and many people can benefit from it! Hearing a language spoken slowly has an important role to play in learning a language, and I appreciate what you are doing to help those who want to learn Swedish. No need to change or modify your approach in any way. Those who can benefit from hearing Swedish spoken slowly will naturally gravitate toward your site, and when they have progressed sufficiently will move on. But, there will always be a steady stream of learners who can benefit from it and so I would encourage you to continue to provide this service for as long as you wish to do so. Thank you on behalf of those learning beginner Swedish.

Love your channel and appreciate your honest wish to help people learn your beautiful language in your very unique way. Haters gonna hate, ignore them, you're helping so many people in our effort to learn Swedish. Like you said, I think none of us are dumb and are aware that in every day life people do not speak this slow, WE KNOW. This doesn't mean your teaching ways are not helpful, because they are. Personally, it's helped me a lot to learn the right pronunciation of words as I'm still in the beginner's stage. I'm almost 3 years late to this but just wanted to leave my comment as I use your videos a lot when I'm studying and I don't think it's fair that such a kind-hearted, useful channel could ever get criticism. They are DEFINITELY helping me A LOT! Swedish has a lot of "reduction" (letters not being spoken or slurred together), which makes it VERY hard to get pronunciation properly. I start by slowing the videos WAY down using the 'settings' of the video. Then, as I get better, I speed-up the videos faster and faster and get a better understanding of 'normal' speech speeds of native Swedes. Eventually, I am able to understand people on other videos.

I think your Swedish videos are very effective, at least for me, it is very helpful because I could understand the context of how the words were used in the sentences.
There is no right or wrong way to teach or learn. It depends on the individuals what works best for them. So such criticism doesn't always help.
Thank you for making these! This is great. ♥

Your videos are 1) super helpful and 2) very interesting! I’m an American with Swedish heritage. I have been wanting to learn Swedish and have been using Duolingo for a couple months. After finding your videos, I’m able to hear svenska in normal context rather than learning how to say “she looks like a moose” which I am not sure how often comes up in normal conversation. Anyways, tack så mycket!

i'm a polyglot (swedish being one of the languages i know) and aspiring linguist and I find videos like these very helpful! a huge part of language is that everything builds off of each other. for example, when you learn german, you usually learn accusative case before dative, since accusative is easier and once you know that it makes dative a little easier. when trying to do listening comprehension, the same thing should go; start easier (hearing people talk slowly) then work your way up. as someone with auditory processing issues it's also helpful, because it can be hard for me to understand people speaking to me, especially in another language. so hearing it slowly first helps me get used to how the words sound even more.

before I have discovered slow swedish, I used the function most video players have to set the playback speed around 0.75x, I actually think this is a great way. "Experts" can have their own opinion, but experimenting and innovating that you have undertaken should be applauded and encouraged. I love the videos!

I appreciate that you speak slowly and clearly, it really helps with my pronunciation. Obviously, I am aware I should speed up once I have the word down. Not sure who these naysayers are, but they probably teach at an SFI school (mostly unhelpful as they just drop you in a class with no direction).

Yes. It’s much more helpful to hear it slowly so we can recognise words and sounds and pronunciation more clearly, so we can attempt to recreate it.
Going too fast, well, I just won’t learn anything that way, when it’s too fast. I can’t retain to memory if it’s too fast. I just simply don’t understand that way.
So, these videos are extremely helpful. Thank you

I love the new pace! It's more my speed. I think the English and Swedish captions are the key to this. Great work! I'm learning Swedish because I did my genealogy and learned that my great great grandfather came to the US from Sweden in the 1860s and learning Swedish is part of understanding my Swedish heritage.

I am learning it because I am learning Scandinavian Paleography to decipher old documents for genealogy. We have Scandinavian ancestors. My instructors say it's important to know sounds as well as spelling because way back when people spelled phonetically.

Don't listen to them. You are doing great! I started to learn Swedish just recently and I find your videos super helpful. Swedes speak fast and nothing is wrong with that but beginners like me need you to make our ears get used to the language and being able to separate words because in the beginning you can't even tell if there was 4 words in the sentence or 10, lol

I think the slow speaking approach is great. I too, when learning German, felt the need to listen to someone speaking slow - and the only way I could do that was listening to people reading books - which is nice but always more on the 'written side' of language. Wish I found something similar in German back in the days. And still watching this video because 1. you're great 2. I find your voice very soothing.
