Japan is one of the countries I really want to visit but am afraid I never will just because it is so far away. But who knows what the future brings. In this video a lot of things were also completely new for me like the parts about the indigenous people, language and religion. It was indeed a bear in that picture. One of the reasons, I think, for Japan being so focused on technology is because it is a resource poor country, so there is no "heavy" industry like most other large countries do have to earn money from. I really need to learn lots more about Japan. It is a fascinating country, to say the least.

Definitely makes sense: technology is a big resource. Need to learn more about Japan!

The Japanese economic miracle was a combination of their insanely strong work ethic, American financial investment after WW2, and the Japanese learning our industrial management techniques in the 1950s (back when we were actually good at that sort of thing). We got sloppy in the 70s and 80s, and Japan didn't.

Emperor Akihito resigned in 2019, after this video came out. Naruhito is the emperor now.

How Japan developed their technology industry stems from various things. You could say the Meiji Restoration was the beginning, as that was when Japan started to really emphasize the importance of modernization. After WWII was over though is when it really started taking off. My country, the US, was partly responsible for this.
During the early months of the occupation, we punished them. Our policies in those months were meant to keep them down. Their income tax was ridiculously high, the same with corporate income tax, excise tax, and inheritance tax. It punished all people, no matter what income level you were.
Then as tensions worsened with the Soviet Union and China, the Truman administration decided that a stronger and more free Japan was a good thing to help stave off communist control and expansion. Our occupation became more lenient. Japan was going to have to pay high reparations to countries from the war, in which we helped get those countries off their back...making the payments more minimal. Then we encouraged the integration of Japan's economy into world commerce. Their markets opened and were allowed to export more.
At the end of our occupation we had cut the taxes and they had reduced their trade tariffs, especially that of the automotive industry and televisions.
The Korean war happened towards the end of the occupation as well. In which we bought tons of food and material for the war from them.
Their application of a set of common, market-friendly economic polices led to higher accumulation of materials and a better allocation of them. With low taxes, less spending, more saving, more secure property rights, and conservative fiscal policies. They also prized education, especially Kindergarten through 12th grade education. All of which resulted in an explosion of human and physical capital.
When you hear,"Post War Economic Miracle", this is what it's referring to. In a single generation, they had restored themselves faster than any country in history. One of the main players in our expanding relations with Japan and their economic recovery was Douglas MacArthur. He helped them draw up a new constitution that included provisions to ensure a limited representative government, free and fair elections, private property, and individual liberties. When we departed, Japan had mourned his departure.
This is actually more of a summary, it goes a bit deeper than what I wrote...but these are the things that stimulated their economy and country. Their technology industry was affected by these things.
