Hey Matt, I have repaired many alternators on my JD tractors. A reman one is over $300. A pair of bearings is $10. I do like your repair videos. Keep them coming. My favorite is the 7 rod welding demo!!
Well done, Matt. I now feel qualified to overhaul my .... um, toaster. 😃⚡ I think I'll stick to my spark plugs and batteries. HA. Always nice to learn about how it is "supposed" to work even if just for troubleshooting awareness. Speaking of learning, I was really expecting some scientific (complicated?) way of putting a load on the alternator and then you went ahead and showed us what is going on behind the curtain! - huge light bulbs?! No way! hahaha. Well, it doesn't have to be complicated but just burn a few electrons for testing. Geez!
I subscribe to the AvE method of renaming everything. So rectifier becomes rectum fryer. Kinda appropriate if you don't get all the connections back together properly. You'll really let the smoke out then. :)
Nice job mate, wouldn’t be a bad idea to move the little sleeve back on the main pivot mounting ear to allow easy fitting next go around. Enjoyed that, cheers
@@thejacksonbrothers it has just had a new alternator fitted. But the dash needed a new ribbon for the lights to work, which I have just fitted. The lights all work except for the charge light it does not come on at all. I suspect the alternator is wired wrong. It does charge at 14.7v.
That’s good Matt, you can keep an alternator going virtually indefinitely with bearing and brush maintenance which is not hard. Can you show how you get the rear bearing out if it stays in the housing, that happens sometimes. Jeff
Yep if they don’t get hot they can last a long time👍 quickest way to get it out is to drill 2 or 3 small holes in the back of the housing and use a pin punch to hit it out👍 not sure if I’ll be doing another alternator video but I’ll try to remember to show it if I do😁👍
@@thejacksonbrothers great, thanks! I've got a landcruiser one I was about to take in to the auto electrician but I'll give it a crack myself now, cheers!
@@ryanwilling6302 if it’s a denso alternator which it should be you may need a special puller tool to separate the housings, you might be able to make something up though👍
Bloody brilliant Mate, thanks for the informative and step by step video.
Saved myself $900 for a new alternator and replaced bearings for $24.
Howdy from South Texas. Appreciate the schooling friend! Always good to learn.
Takes me back to early days of technology. Thank you!
Enjoyed that immensely. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
Good work Matt leave it 5 years and you will have 500 000 views 👀
Good stuff Matt, always handy to know-how to test em
That was really informative and very interesting to watch. Thanks for uploading the video.
Matt you are certainly a handy person to have on the farm with all the equipment you have. Interesting video. 👍👍👍👍

Yep I forget that every time until I try put it back in😂
Cool a mid week video 👍
Great video mate, currently mucking around with an alternator on a komatsu forklift. Drains battery overnight and charge light not working.
Thanks mate, if alternator is what is draining the battery then I would suspect that the regulator is faulty and it’s keeping the rotor energised👍

G'day Matt nice video mate
That was great, where do you get new bearings from? Just a local bearing shop or genuine vehicle parts?
Hi Ryan, just got them from local bearing shop, most alternators use easily obtainable bearing👍

Great job!
Was just wondering if plan B was dismantling it with a D11, but no...
It certainly would be dismantled😂
Cool video, thanks for the info. What you call the slip rings, I have always called the commutator, not sure if it's still the same or not.
Hi mate, thanks, I learnt that slip rings are on alternators and commutators are starter motors👍
@@thejacksonbrothers that makes sense! Never thought of that. Thanks
Fantastic, thanks.
What causes an alternator to under charge?
Nice video
Thanks very interesting
Interesting video
Good stuff, thanks.
Cheers
Its a lost art repairing parts.
