'Peace on Earth' and Bowie's voice over 'Drummer Boy' works amazingly well. *Sublime* The most productive work hour Fraser, Grossman, and Kohan ever spent was writing 'Peace on Earth'. † As BP1 said "It's Class", "Quality". *10/10* if the banter at the start had less 'Dairylea': " 'Ello, are you the new butler, 😀 ... you're not the poor relation from America? 😃 you ever listen to the older fellers? 😄 Yes, sure, I listen to John Lennon ... " 😉😃 I like: '... agents sliding down the chimney. What? I was just seeing if you're paying attention ...' 👏 I think I saw this decades ago on UK terrestrial TV, not sure exactly when. Until recently, I thought Little Drummer Boy with Peace on Earth was the traditional arrangement. I hope everyone had a Chill Boxing Day. Happy New Year 🎄🎅🎄 ---- BTW, Bing Crosby was a pioneer in tape recording, first for radio, then later for TV: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampex#Origin The nitty gritty of recording Bing Crosby's radio show is at: ethw.org/First-Hand:Bing_Crosby_and_the_Recording_Revolution#The_Recording_Revolution It's fascinating if you're into modern-technology history. It's a bit mind boggling that Bing Crosby had the interest, and acumen, to invest in tape recording. Bing put in enough money to get professional-quality tape recording off the ground! @G Bulmer Thank you for the very informative comment as always. I learnt a lot from your comment will follow up with the links you have posted to add to my own knowledge. We hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and lets welcome in the New Year and see if we can make 2022 better for everyone. Look forward to catching up soon.
@@BritPopsReact The article about recording Bing's radio show is fascinating to me. I knew live concerts and important speeches were recorded directly using a disk cutting lathe. However, I didn't realise Bing Crosby's radio show was recorded that way. Further, they edited by making a new disk from previous disk generations. So quality rapidly degraded, and it took a lot of equipment. Using magnetic tape retained 'first generation' quality, and editing only needed scissors and 'scotch tape'. The documentary I heard (or saw) was a bit less charitable than the wikipedia article. The documentary said that Bing wanted tape recording because making his show interfered with playing golf! Now, knowing it was recorded on disk, his support of magnetic tape seems even more astute. One of the many down-sides of editing something recording to disk is the smallest mistake would still need the whole process of cutting a 'next' generation disk. So all the 'ad libs' were scripted. Plus sponsors might want changes. Nightmare! 😞
This is a wonderful example of counterpoint and the message is quintessentially Christmas. Well done, BPR! If you want to hear Bing at the top of his form with some Sinatra thrown in, they sing a duet called What A Swell Party This Is, from the movie High Society, that's pretty amazing.
Truly was so excited you selected this one! I have always loved it , but BP2 brought such great info I did not know! Thank you, and yes BP2 you definitely did well in fighting for the 10! Hope you had a Happy Christmas and wish you both Happy New Year too.
