Instructions were easy to follow and complete. Only difference in the video, the HD was fastened with TR6, they were TR7 screws on my Mac Mini late 2014. Thanks!
Great video as others have mentioned. Simple and precise. May have already been mentioned, but from my experience here's what was missing: (1) you have to be careful pushing the logic board out as to not crush the fan's exhaust fins, (2) the four HDD bracket screws were T7, (3) the ribbon cable connected to the HDD is secured by a piece of black tape that needs to be removed so the SATA cable can be separated from HDD, and (4) reuse the black sticky pads from the HDD on your new drive and place them in the same location as old drive.
Great video. They make this stuff so small anymore, it's difficult to do basic tasks like replacing a HDD. A standard 2.5" laptop HDD was 1/8" too tall to fit in my late 2014 Mac Mini--so I ended up putting the S.M.A.R.T. failed HDD back in the device and hoping Steve Gibson''s SpinRite will get it working again long enough to get a full backup. I got probably 80% of my files off it by booting into recovery mode (option + command + r), attach an external HDD and use Terminal to cp -R my volume. Will make sure I have Time Machine backing everything up first thing--then hope I can limp along until I can afford a replacement HDD from macsales. That way I'll know it will fit!
great instruction. thank you very much. one thing not in this is when you go to remove the hard drive, there is glue holding the harness to the old hard drive and a piece of tape holding the connector to the drive. I had to slide a thin card under the glue and peel off the tape to free the hard drive from the connector. for anyone doing this, be careful with the harness and connector while freeing the old HD.
Great Video. One of the best I have seen. Very detailed. If people don't have the special security T6 then can use a pair on pliers to grip and undo the screws at the bottom of the case.
Worked well. Only suggestion would be the bent over coat hanger for the removal of the logic board inserting as shown elsewhere. I was finding the fins were distorting . Thanks
No. It's not that serious for me.....I'll just buy newer & hope I'll won't need to upgrade anytime soon. Either that or have an external drive on standby.
Thinking of getting the newly released 2020 Mac Mini. Do you think the SSD installation is the same as the one shown in this video? Thanks for the tutorial.
Everything is soldered on the 2020 M1 Mac Mini, you will not be able to upgrade anything. What you can do is connect an external SSD via thunderbolt port.
Save Apple Dollars when you bought the ssd, did the seller provide you all the tools? Or you bought the tools separately? I’m attempted, but afraid to mess it up by my big fingers. Thank you.
Once you’re done installing the SSD will it automatically load up with Mac OS or am I going to have to re install it? Could you explain how I am supposed to do that? Thanks so much
The best way to do this is to run a full Time Machine backup to an external disk right before you disassemble the MacMini. Put in the new SSD, then boot into Recovery Mode by holding down Command+R as you turn the computer on. Then go into Disk Utility and erase your SSD and format it as MacOS Extended (Journaled). Then restore the Time Machine backup and you will be back where you were before you started. Except your Mac will boot up at least 5 times faster than it did before.
Logic board won't come out. At all. I've warped the fins on the heatsink trying to pull it out. I'm happy I didn't pay for this thing, as this machine may very well not even see the light of day by the time I take it apart. :/
I just ruined my sensor cable by following your instructions! At 2:20 you say to just unplug the sensor cable but it doesn't unplug and it broke off the section it plugs in to on the logic board. Now I guess I have to replace the logic board!!!
@@WooznamAndTheLickers yes I continued with everything else OK and just going without the LED on light. It all still works but there's no indicator light.
Best to use a small plastic spudger to *gently* get under these tiny connectors and *gently* lift them up and out. Using anything metal is not a good idea. Using tweezers as shown in the video is, IMHO, a plan for disaster. 😞 And *never* pull on the wires. Get under the connector body and lift it up.when you put them back, lay the connector in place and gently press it back onto the pins. Go slow. Pay attention to detail. This stuff is tiny. Clean your glasses. 🤓 Use a magnifying glass if you need to.

Absolutely awesome video. Not too many people walk you through reassembly. Thanks so much!
I was afraid to do that. But you did perfectly and clear. Then made it look easier than other videos I had watched Thanks a lot.

Thanks , seems like that part was skipped on the vid.
Best, well explained, specifict, clear tutorial ever!!!!!!

I am definitely going to be doing this soon. You made it look easy and straight forward. Good stuff!
Best tutorial ever! Thank you so much!
Super thorough video. Made upgrading the SSD a breeze. Thanks!
What brands and models of SSD hard drives do you recommend?
Worked well. Only suggestion would be the bent over coat hanger for the removal of the logic board inserting as shown elsewhere. I was finding the fins were distorting . Thanks
Fantastic, thanks so much. Just put a new drive into my mac mini and it's so much faster. The video was perfect
The screwdriver for remove the screws that hold the hdd is not a t6, have to use a t7 screwdriver
I am planning to replace the 1 TB HD by a 1 TB SSD. what should be the specs for the SSD ? will a regular 2.5" 1 TB SATA III fit ?
Splendid, thanks for this!
Absolutely perfect video. Can't thank you enough.
Easy to follow, Thank you. It works perfectly!!

Thank you ! My HD failed and needed to replace it.
Wow ! Very good tutorial and presentation. I just upgrade mine, went all OK with your information. Thanks again !
Excellent tutorial and well presented. Thank you, it helped a lot.
Wonderful tutorial. Worked perfectly.
Thank you, this helps me a lot. I am using my mac mini 2014 with new SSD drive. ^^!
hi..thanks for the video! do I need to install the OS on the new hard drive or the OS is located somewhere else on a Mac? Thanks
Do u have to reinstall the mac os?

Thanks for showing us how difficult it is, and easy to mess it up. I am better off get an external drive instead.
External is at least 3 times slower.

@@pennmar120 No need to replace the HDD, you can just add a PCIe NVME SSD, the connection is right there just after removing the metal cover.
Hi friend , no need clone hdd to ssd ? .
OS can be install direct from mini, like BrandNew ?
excellent video, super clear, 0% bs, thank you!
Great Video - informative and simple
Thanks for your expert guidance
What about OS? Was SSD pre-formatted? How did you reinstall MacOS?
Tks bro! You’re amazing!!
great video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
How to install the OS . When the SSD drive is placed
You don't need to take machine apart, just connect a cloned SSD to external USB and make it the bootable drive. No need to suffer make life easy.
Can u use any ssd?
Once you’re done installing the SSD will it automatically load up with Mac OS or am I going to have to re install it? Could you explain how I am supposed to do that? Thanks so much

Ssd model ??
I changed hard drive but I couldn’t install ssd
Could you please help me
Thanks..
Why do you keep saying "go ahead"

J T I just did the same thing

spat7378 yes good advice and I wish I did it this way. I’m lucky I only lost the infrared sensor function and don’t really use a remote anyway.
How many people saw this video and decided NOT to update their old Mac Mini and instead got a new computer LOLOLOL!
Perfect video... Made me realise Apple engineers are a bunch of a****holes... why did they make it so complicated to replace the HDD !
This looks almost as bad as swapping out the hard drive in the eMac! (remember that thing?)
Rather the watch on his wrist lol
Don't follow this tuto, it forgets so much...I quit after the removal of motherboard
Thank you!
