i just bought one, im 5'6", i do tiptoe. Im ok with it for now. i love the bike so much i cant stop riding it. All day comfort, canyon carving, around town, even my grocery getter now too.
Had a 3 cylinder Triumph Sprint. Was a great bike! Now it's time to try the Tracer 900 GT. Heated grips and cruise control. What great features to include! Yamaha has hit the mark on this bike!
Nice to see the concept of "touring" bikes dropping back from the 40-year cc wars that took us to 1000, then 1100, then 1200, 1500, 1800. I can attest to 750cc or even 650cc taking you very smartly all over North America without ever feeling too small.
I had the 2015 FJ-09, and put 45,000 miles on it. All across the US, including Alaska. Amazing fun bike, and super reliable. With the heated grips, improved suspension, quick shifter, display, hard luggage, and increased fuel range, I might have to get another one. Good work Yamaha.
You know, regular tear drop turn signals have always been the best. They are gorgeous. And regular, man sized mufflers have always been beautiful, and part of the overall look of a motorcycle. The modern styling is level 10 cringe. I can't even express it in words. Kawasaki's bikes have become so ugly, they are actually disgusting. They have the flat, low profile, triangle shaped turn signals, that nobody ever wanted, and they look so wretched, they ruin the entire motorcycle. And then Yamaha with their super tiny headlights. I don't think any man on Earth wants tiny headlights (???). Or tiny mufflers. Do men like tiny mufflers? No. Nobody likes non-symmetrical, blob shaped mufflers. I'm still waiting for the 1999 Yamaha R1 styling to come back again. It will come back... And when it comes back, people will be pissed that they sold their 1999.
Nice review. I own a 2017 fj. Great bike, especially since I've added a Sargent seat, taller windshield, GPS, Givi 40 litre top case, frame slider, Clearwater aux light.. I don't like blue wheels, but when It comes time to buy a new bike, I can live with them. There is nothing this bike cannot do well - commute, lane split, twisties, touring. My first post break in ride was from Hollywood, CA to Beaver, Utah. Very comfortable, but I had to eventually swap out the stock seat. Easily cruised at 90 mph. Demoed the FJR but it wasn't for me. Much less torque than the fj, heavier, comfortable to the point where I would be in danger of falling asleep on long rides. But it's still a good bike and has a loyal following.
I’ve been comparing and contrasting sport touring bikes for over a year, and this one ticks all the boxes at a reasonable price point. Can’t wait to test ride one.My only gripe is the wheel color which I would do something about.
Nice Ride. Ive had 3 cyl Triumphs for awhile and love 'em. I'll let them sort it out a little more(it seems well sorted already!) and offer a different color. Black sucks for a touring bike, as does purple wheels. The looks of the bike is nice, they got away from the Jetson's look so many bikes have now. That should help it appeal to us older riders.
I own a 2015 Fz09 and put 30k miles on it... i can attest to the reliability of the bike as a whole...im currently on the market for a tourer and im really digging the tracer900 GT... you're review was well put and really hit the details other reviews havent so far.... totally got my sub!
Really good and reliable bike however there are 2 major cost cutting measures by Yamaha. One, stock tires are terrible and I replaced mine with Pilot Road 5 within 100 miles. Two, the chain is very cheap and unlikely to last even 10k miles. Unaware of this flaw I was forced to replace chain and sprockets. Top of the line DID chain with new sprockets will double the life of the original set. Overall an excellent bike with well integrated options like the plug and play heated grips. While the Tracer is likely more comfortable for a pillion rider than a GSXR and Yamaha lowered the pillion pegs this year I'm still not convinced this is a two up motorcycle unless she's an itty bitty thing. My 2C.
Best backdrop to a motorcycle review ever. I've ridden one, it's a great bike. If your tall like me that screen on any setting creates wind noise and buffeting. Would I swop my MT10 for one? Wouldn't be as exciting to ride but I would save a fortune in fuel.

Non of those bikes or the Yam Triple come close to the midrange punch and high rev insanity that is the CP4 crossplane engine. Never owned a bike that lifts the front wheel off the throttle in 3rd and 4th like the MT10.

Appreciate your solid review and I'm dying to test ride one. Seems silly to buy any new bike without some kind of test ride, but unfortunately, many US Yamaha dealers worry that test rides adds too many miles to their bikes. Catch 22? OBTW I like the blue wheels!
Sometimes there are Yamaha demo days and you can test ride one. I just did that two weeks ago and I was ready to get the bike until my test ride. For some reason I was expecting the bike to have more torque (just like the FZ09) and it wasn't there and yes I tried all three driving modes. So everything about the bike is great except the torque part. Maybe my expectations are high since I currently have the 1290 SuperDuke (that's up for sale) I don't know.
Downside is, the lower pannier support is attached to that bracket, so you will need to put the passenger pegs back on when you attach the panniers. Probably not a problem for many. I do plan to get one and will run with the panniers off most of the time. I do hit the passenger pegs with my heels as I ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs, but it is only a minor annoyance and not a deal breaker (there are worse bikes out there for that, the Z900 and Ninja 1k come to mind)
Very interested in this bike. Local dealer expects to have one in the next few weeks and I plan on taking a good look. Currently riding a Ninja 1000 which is similar in design intent.
When will they build an MT10 Tracer ? Would love to see that .... any plans for Yamaha to go that direction?? This bike looks great; I’m currently riding a 1990 FJ 1200 (amazing old school ride), but would love to upgrade to something newer. Yamaha make a great bike....
You didn't mentioned the longer swing-arm which makes the bike more stable at a higher speed. Also the the vibration through the handle bars isn't good. But its a budget biker at a good price.
Looks like a fun sporty bike. I still think I would keep my '17 versys 1000LT over this. Bigger for the longer miles but still quite flickable. That fz-09 engine is something special.
I had a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT and it was a great bike, but I wasn't doing that much touring, so I traded it for a 2016 Kawasaki Z1000, it is much lighter and handles much better, but the seat is very hard, might get a Corbin for it ! Great review on the tracer, keep up the good work !
Anyone who was riding dirt bike .... now riding this Tracer. Could comment on the suspension and handling when it in rural areas with poor road condition and lots of twists. I know it’s not going to replace the Tenere but assuming you don’t do much off road.
The whole thing is a beautiful masterpiece. Especially the dual headlights. But then there's that "muffler" thingy on the side. Who signs the "final" approval in engineering at these comapnies. Who put the vertical louvers on the ZX-14 that make it look like a 1980's bike? Who decided that slash cut blob shaped mufflers were ok? Who decided that countershaft sensors should determine speed, and always be 7 mph too high? Why do motorcycles not have a rear wheel speed sensor, so you can change your gearing? Why do modern bikes not have an overdrive? Why do modern bikes turn 5,500 rpms at 75mph, when there is absolutely no load on the engine? Why do they keep adding more power, whilst never increasing the final drive gear ratio? The engineers need to chime in NOW, and explain their extreme myopia (negligence).
This one doesn't need Ohlins suspension, unless you're doing track days with it. I test rode one last weekend (they are on the Yamaha demo trucks in the US now *wink wink*) and the suspension felt rock solid leaned over and the ride quality was still excellent not super stiff like the FJ-09 was or the Versys is. Still an Akra exhaust would do wonders for the sound. A remap is no longer needed for throttle response, it is absolutely butter smooth even in A mode, the old jerky throttle is gone (remap might still free up a little power).
Not really sure why you would want to put ohlins on it? Its a sport touring bike, not a TD bike you can flog the shit out. Im curious, will this shut down at 115 like the FJ09 does? Hopefully not?
1990 called and wants it's headlights and blinkers back wink wink. Good review with the wheelies and editing. I would like Yamaha to put a centered dash on the MT without the old dirt bike gauge, monochrome really? Where is the the old FJ FZ analog dash use it.
You'll notice that when you visit the Yamaha accessories page for the rear rack for a Tracer 900 GT, they do not recommend using the factory rear top case and the saddlebags at the same time - "Hard Saddlebags and Top Case not recommended to be used together due to increased risk of overloading the motorcycle". How on earth can Yamaha call this a sport touring bike if you can't use the 3 piece luggage at the same time?!?!?
Armour783 dude have u ever heard about aerodynamic,u can use it but it is not recommended.to any bike in this world.if you would like to ride at high speed.this is what they means.
Mohd Jazme nope sorry. I don’t know of any bike in the sport touring category who’s manufacturer says you can’t use all three FACTORY hard bags in conjunction with one another. Also it’s because it would overload the subframe. Yamaha’s words, not mine. Has nothing to do with aerodynamics.
I have the older version, the fj-09. Any long trip I go on I have all three pieces on mine and I have larger 50l top case. Never had any issue even with a passenger on. Had it at top speed and was as smooth as with no luggage.
Nice bike. Some of the new features (better seat / suspension) would be great. But my 2015 MT-09 Tracer (FJ-09) is still in perfect condition. I can't justify a trade-in at this point.
The slim line panniers look basically the same as the old ones but with flatter lids. Can you still fit a full face helmet in them like I can on the old ones?
That may be so (but may not be) but how would a member of the public, the audience know that for a company. Why would they care when a companies fiscal year starts, regular folk just work off the calendar they are in.
For as long as I can understand, car manufacturers and motorcycle companies alike have advertised models as being 1 year ahead of the year of its actual release. Some of it deals with model liquidation; selling models released as 2019 in 2018 makes the product seem more valuable and more valuable than the previous models. The human philosophy that is intertwined with sales and manufacturing is the root cause. People react differently and therefore purchase differently. Items are advertised as $19.99 rather than $20.00 because that 1 cent difference has a substantial effect on people's valuing of a product. It isn't intended to make sense to the consumer but rather makes sense for the producer.
What about the fueling? Some reviewers said it was jerky and some made no mention. I do hate the on hard and off hard fueling that Yamaha has on some models. What was your take on this?
This is true, Michael. The fueling isn't great and throttle response can be a little jerky, however, it is vastly improved compared to previous MT/FZ-09 models -- Rennie
STIjojoSTI yes you can, the pegs aren’t quite as comfortable to stand on as an adventure bike due to them not having the wide pegs with the rubber on them. I’m 6’2 and I’m still able stand on it. Hope this helps
So my FJR 1300 has 22 liter bags and they will fit a full faced helmet, I was told you can't fit one in the 900 GT and they are 22 liter capacity, what gives???
It depends which panniers are fitted. I watched a British review of the GT and the panniers wouldn't fit a full face helmet. The pannier lids were flat. The panniers in this review are more like the FJR pannier with the lids being slightly domed and look a bit bigger.
They are the same pannier to the FJR but there are different lids available, even for FJR. The larger FJR lid, convex, gives 30 litres. The flatter lid which is used on Tracer gives 20 litres in EU spec. Guess Yamaha think it looks sportier? There may be another reason - the payload of the Tracer is on the low side. Maybe they don't want too much weight on subframe fully loaded?
Sorry but I don't agree. I have had shaft drive and belt drive bikes and the belt drive is better in my opinion. The shaft drive of my Kawasaki leaked at the final drive and the universal joint had to be replaced at the transmission coupling. In 30,000 kms on my belt drive Yamaha no issues whatsoever, not even an adjustment needed.
Shaft drive would make it as heavy as the Tenere and would up the cost making it not so budget friendly anymore. Also it does have a centre stand making chain service a lot easier.
David Gough I own an FJR as well. Test rode one of these today. It is an amazing bike for the money. It's 150 pounds lighter than the FJR and boy howdy it really feels like it. I hope they sell well. Amazing bike for the money.
Love triples but the leg and foot position seem too far back. Maybe just looks that way. I like a more forward position especially for long hauls. Where the hell can u put hwy pegs much less a full engine guard? Frame sliders? Really? Come on This is not a true sport adventure bike. More like a one day trip and home.
You must try, but sure is, that there is short distance between handlebar and seat, so you seat more on tank. And windshield is not useable /very noisy for helmet/ for your height.
Nevermind. Checked official accessories section of Yamaha site...top rack available to fit standard Yamaha 39 or 50L case. Not color matched, guess that doesn't really matter.
@@cyclenews ha dont care, just though you should open like that each time thought it sounded great rather than the usual mundane test reviews put out by some companies now, keep up the good show. Ps sorry for the spelling Deer+ 120mph + skydive onto brain set life pretty straight
Why don't Americans talk about what the wind blast is like without a helmet? I despise a visor on my face unless I'm racing. If i'm cruising, its either half helmet or neither (state depending). Nothing will make me hate a bike more than one that blasts directed air right at my face. ....I was about to trade my Tiger 800 right after I bought it because of the shat windscreen; but then I found out about Madstad - problem solved.
So at the very end of a pretty exciting review the guy ruins it... “it’s not the most exciting exciting bike Yamahas ever built”...way to kill the buzz dude
Howdy all, Hey did anyone get told some crap about the panniers not being on the bike when you pick it up ..not till 2 weeks....too bad if you had a trip planned....ACT, CMC. Shop , telling ya this the day you pick it up... useless sales people..new nothing

The Tracer GT is great for twisty roads but remember it was a 17" inch front tire and no skid plate. I leave the GT at home if I'm not on good roads and take the KLR650.

My bad. You're right. Messed up there. I've made a correction in the text.
Too true, mrvwbug44, something I'd forgotten about!
Excellent review!! Confirmed I’m buying this bike next summer!
this will be a good upgrade from my fz6r
Very interested in this bike. Local dealer expects to have one in the next few weeks and I plan on taking a good look. Currently riding a Ninja 1000 which is similar in design intent.
When will they build an MT10 Tracer ? Would love to see that .... any plans for Yamaha to go that direction?? This bike looks great; I’m currently riding a 1990 FJ 1200 (amazing old school ride), but would love to upgrade to something newer. Yamaha make a great bike....
Thank You Almighty God, I will buy one for myself
You didn't mentioned the longer swing-arm which makes the bike more stable at a higher speed. Also the the vibration through the handle bars isn't good. But its a budget biker at a good price.
Looks like a fun sporty bike. I still think I would keep my '17 versys 1000LT over this. Bigger for the longer miles but still quite flickable. That fz-09 engine is something special.
I got a r1200GSlc won't be renewing they're off the scale now expensive, this might be the ticket. Must test ride - good review
Great informative review 👍
What’s with 1999 blinkers? Those things really destroy the good looks of the bike. Otherwise sounds like I need to give it a try...
Anyone who was riding dirt bike .... now riding this Tracer.
Could comment on the suspension and handling when it in rural areas with poor road condition and lots of twists. I know it’s not going to replace the Tenere but assuming you don’t do much off road.
Still 1 headlight, missed opportunity. Kawasaki with the z1000sx got that.
Yamaha, please get rid of those goofy teardrop shaped, 1990 turn signals!
Dave Reinhart apparently they made a ton of those back then and need to use them lol
They put them on so they can sell you an led upgrade for 100$
If that's the worst thing you can find in a bike, you are truly blest.
only USA get those ugly indicators.
Full exhaust and remap wakes it up nicely. As does Ohlins suspension
Sure does.
Exhaust sounds fine to me.
Not really sure why you would want to put ohlins on it? Its a sport touring bike, not a TD bike you can flog the shit out. Im curious, will this shut down at 115 like the FJ09 does? Hopefully not?
+10 on the sound of the exhaust.
1990 called and wants it's headlights and blinkers back wink wink. Good review with the wheelies and editing. I would like Yamaha to put a centered dash on the MT without the old dirt bike gauge, monochrome really? Where is the the old FJ FZ analog dash use it.
Now bring the Tracer 700 to the states already.
Thank you. I certainly want one in my garage.
Just bought one!
me as well just a month ago
U like it?
I want the Tracer 700. When is it going to come out in the U.S.?
I told 650ib I would love to have one of those I currently ride a 97 vfr750f sport touring bike
Nice bike. Some of the new features (better seat / suspension) would be great. But my 2015 MT-09 Tracer (FJ-09) is still in perfect condition. I can't justify a trade-in at this point.
Panniers that can’t house your helmet? Handy!
Great review but what’s the fuel range like.and is going to be available in Australia
Hoover Looks like around 180/190 miles 290 K max till on fumes.
The slim line panniers look basically the same as the old ones but with flatter lids. Can you still fit a full face helmet in them like I can on the old ones?
visibility saves lives. black rear, really???
I know it'll wheelie but did you mention fuel capacity/range or did I miss it?
Capacity is 4.8 gal. Haven't done a range test yet as this was just the press intro.
But u road it all day >? # fuel range is a top factor for my aussie butt.
2019, you can buy it now so why not just call it a 2018 model?
That's just what many manufacturers do. It's come earlier than other models.
The year's beyond half over. People would expect discounts on remaindered '2018' products!
Fiscal year is different than calendar year
That may be so (but may not be) but how would a member of the public, the audience know that for a company.
2020 FJR 1300 es please! 😀
Does the open space near the peg and chain draw your pant leg in?⚠️🤔
How is the suspension on it compared to the 2015 FJ09 ? Thanks
Nice review.
Any one do any 2up touring with this bike? Wonder how the suspension holds up with 2 riders and gear.
Can you stand up while riding on it like an adventure bike?
STIjojoSTI yes you can, the pegs aren’t quite as comfortable to stand on as an adventure bike due to them not having the wide pegs with the rubber on them. I’m 6’2 and I’m still able stand on it. Hope this helps
Two words .... cool Bike.
I must go for a test ride . ........
Nah, what could go wrong, I just bought the bike.
Got to have one !
When is it being released in Australia " I what one "
Not sure, sorry.
Cycle News well that's not the answer I wanted to hear
Great bike. YES
They are quite skinny and long, so even though they have the same capacity, they aren't wide enough for a full-size helmet.
Patrick Wheeler FJR bags are 29 litre
I could do without the blue rims. I honestly wouldn't give a nickel for different turn signals.
I’m waiting on the tracer 1000gt 😏
That’s not a great range, my current bike I get around 400 k/s with a 20 litre tank , and are they coming to Australia.
fyi, the rear pegs are removeable. Do you do any product research?
Look at the video description.
At 7:48 you refer to the rear pegs as being welded on. No big deal but just wrong.
Should have been belt drive. Long distance touring on a bike with a chain is a pain.
James Weber BMW style shaft system is way better than both...couple lube points and you’re good to go!
Have they done anything to increase the carrying capacity limit?
No. Same 22L as before.
I think he means load capacity. Its a paltry 167kg with the panniers fitted, pretty poor.
No, consider this a 1up tourer and only occasional pillion.
That low load capacity and slim lids on the FJR panniers is a bit of deal breaker.
It’s almost there for me. Not a fan of those shiny bags. The wheels are hideous. And it needs a lighter color scheme. Otherwise, great bike!
Super cool bike but Im not sure Id ditch my FJR for one......
Nah, I wouldn't if I were you. -- Rennie
If the FJRs weight doesn't bother you I probably wouldn't ditch it.
David Gough I own an FJR as well. Test rode one of these today. It is an amazing bike for the money. It's 150 pounds lighter than the FJR and boy howdy it really feels like it. I hope they sell well. Amazing bike for the money.
what was the money they were selling for? and where did you ride one.?
hANNAbONE 12,999 in Marshall texas
no sump guard?
Love triples but the leg and foot position seem too far back. Maybe just looks that way. I like a more forward position especially for long hauls. Where the hell can u put hwy pegs much less a full engine guard? Frame sliders? Really? Come on
This is not a true sport adventure bike. More like a one day trip and home.
I have the 2018 model. Is there any diference between mine and 2019 model?
the year bro
the year
I never quite understood the wearing a black t-shirt on 100F degree days...
Hides the sweat marks lol
@@tjaynes22 ...because the entire t-shirt is one giant sweat mark.
@@WildBikerBill hahah
hello
Does it fit rider tall 190-192 Cm ???
You must try, but sure is, that there is short distance between handlebar and seat, so you seat more on tank. And windshield is not useable /very noisy for helmet/ for your height.
Looks cramped for tall riders. His foot hit the rear passenger peg.
I assume a top case is available (OEM color matched)?
Nevermind. Checked official accessories section of Yamaha site...top rack available to fit standard Yamaha 39 or 50L case. Not color matched, guess that doesn't really matter.
Get a 55L Givi...
Can't handle those blue wheels and gold forks, otherwise great looking bike!
2019? How much they paid you for this?
African twin or this????
If you're going to do a bit of off-road, Africa Twin. If just straight up touring, then go the Tracer.
Its basically a shittier version of the fz1?
Brandon Ellis how so? Just because the motor isn't as big?
Jerry Sasuman
your opening words made me think you was drunk
That would be "were" drunk. Not was.
@@cyclenews ha dont care, just though you should open like that each time thought it sounded great rather than the usual mundane test reviews put out by some companies now, keep up the good show. Ps sorry for the spelling Deer+ 120mph + skydive onto brain set life pretty straight
The indicators are so fugly, it's embarrassing.
If that seat is anything like other sporty yamahas, you can kiss my butt if you are going to tell me that is more comfortable on a long trip.
Well, I spent eight hours on it and it was fine for me. Can't speak for your butt, though.
Howdy all, Hey did anyone get told some crap about the panniers not being on the bike when you pick it up ..not till 2 weeks....too bad if you had a trip planned....ACT, CMC. Shop , telling ya this the day you pick it up... useless sales people..new nothing
looks like a bmw gs
The reviewer turns me off the review a bit
2" taller than my FJR. I'm already tip toeing, so I just stopped watching.
Anyone who was riding dirt bike .... now riding this Tracer.
Could comment on the suspension and handling when it in rural areas with poor road condition and lots of twists. I know it’s not going to replace the Tenere but assuming you don’t do much off road.
The Tracer GT is great for twisty roads but remember it was a 17" inch front tire and no skid plate. I leave the GT at home if I'm not on good roads and take the KLR650.
fwg1961 hanks buddy. The Tenare 700 is coming to Brunei soon.
