Scar's attitude as king is actually a big part of his character. He wanted the power of a king, but not the responsibilities that come with the throne. He is an allegory for people who want power for the sake of power.
He's a pretty cool parallel to young Simba. At the start of the film, Simba was immature and wanted to be king because he thought it would be awesome, without any thought for the responsibilities or obligations involved.
Scar's pretty much the same. He acts smart and sophisticated but underneath it all he's just a little brat who's jealous of older sibling.

Fun fact, Vincent Price stated in an interview that voicing Ratigan was his most favorite thing that he did in his movie career because he always wanted to voice a Disney villain. That explains why put so much time and dedication to voicing him.
The coachman from Pinocchio seems to be one of the worst. Smaller role, but he did horrific things and seems to be the only person who completely got away with it and was in no way hindered in the course of the movie. Just keeps kidnapping children and turning them into donkeys.

Idk if you’ve read the book the movie’s based on, but she had a pet cat and whenever she would have kittens, Cruella would personally kill them. If anything, Disney toned her evil down

Frollo is my favorite Disney Villain. I found him quite scary as a kid because I already knew at the time there are people like him in real life: dictators, cult leaders etc. Now I find him kinda epic, especially with the song Hellfire.
Frollo has also become a popular internet meme in recent years. Together with Gaston he has become a funny but epic anti- hero in various TH-cam Poops and especially in the Frollo Show by Chincherrinas. I recommend checking it out.

I still haven't seen The Great Mouse Detective.
It is a very under-rated Disney movie in my opinion, dark, ominous and humorous. Some great characters.

Ah Ratigan is menacing but finnish version of Ursula is my nightmare just listen to Surkeat Sielut(Poor unfortunate souls) and she is voiced by moomin mamma which makes her sinister voice work even more menacing.
Fun facts: For anyone that want to know the song that's playing, it's "When You're Evil", by Aurelio Voltaire. If his voice sounds familiar, he sang "Brains!" on The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and the opening song for their movie "Big Boogey Adventure", had big involvement in an online game called Adventure Quest Worlds (I think that's what it's called) a long time ago, wrote "What is Goth?" and is overall a great guy. Currently, he's still producing music, and has a show on TH-cam called Gothic Homemaking. I've been listening to his music for a good 8 years or so now, and I watch Gothic Homemaking, I highly recommend giving him a listen/watch.
Funny enough. Both Billy & Mandy And THIS Review got us to know Voltaire a little bit and soon found his channel. The guy is lovable. ^^

One of my favorite musicians.
A minor addition, but his songs are also prominent in the Vampair series made by TH-cam animator Daria Cohen, which shows the experiences of a pair of vampires, Duke and Missy, the former being voiced by Voltaire (albeit only through his songs).
Small point, that wasn't the Devil in Fantasia. That was Chernobog, Slavic God of Darkness. Counterpart to the God of Light, Belobog. It's generally believed that a misinterpreted merger of these two being is responsible for the Christian image/name of Beelzebub.
He was mainly inspired by the Devil so while he's not the Biblical Satan or the Devil he still without a doubt is a equivalent of the Devil.
Not sure about the Beelzebub part; I think he's still named in the Old Testament.

Nostalgia Critic can't remake the list even in 2019 because the only villains since then have been Dr. Facilier and Mother Gothel.
BTW, Jafar was mostly animated by Andreas Deja, a man. But a pregnant woman animated the disguised "begger Jafar" who guided Aladdin to the cave.
king candy /turbo was in my opinion the last great villain from disney.
Back when he did his list of Top 11 Villain Songs, he mentioned that Facilier would have made this list if The Princess and the Frog had come out earlier.

I know that’s stupid, it’s Disney, but just look at his fight with Basil! It is extremely violent and Basil is loosing. And loosing bad. And he doesn’t even win by his wits he wins by luck. Sheer luck! If the clock bell didn’t ring Ratigan probably would’ve killed him

The thing that makes Scar a great villain is that he's arguably the most successful Disney Villain. Most villains either don't achieve their goal or when they do it's not for very long. Scar not only achieved his goal of becoming king but he was able to remain in power for YEARS.
Most of the villains got away with their evil actions for years too, there's really no difference. But the most important aspect of a villain is their behavior and charisma. There's no use in being successful if you don't respect that villain

Ah memories, this was the first NC I ever saw. I'd loooove to see an updated list, or even one mixed with live action and Pixar villains. Now that we've had a few more rogues added to the gallery I think it'd be good for an editorial

2. Kronk I believe is more benign than evil, but he definitely is a villain because he helps out Yzma's schemes (till the climax anyways). I just like pairing them together on lists because their chemistry really works. Yzma on her own isn't that great a villain.

Frollo is actually my favorite. And I disagree that he didn't have a "heart". Like you said, he sees himself as a good guy no matter what horrible things he does. His religious believes plus he is own insecurity and madness just makes a villain that see himself as a hero and a slave to his god. It makes him think and feel that he is right.

If Scar managed to make the list, then Zira should have been at least one place ahead of him. She's nowhere near as whiny or prissy, she's more savage than he was, and she sings a lullaby to her own son about how he's going to grow up and massacre Simba and his followers. Her motive might be the cliche'd revenge, but the way she goes about it is just so chilling! Raising her own son into a weapon to use for said revenge... "Scar is gone, but Zira's still around to love this little lad... until he learns to be a killer with a lust for being bad!!!"
Then again, I don't know if Disney Sequels count.

Not really. As much as I love Lion King II Zira was just too generic and was trying way too hard to be Scar.

Scar will ALWAYS be my favorite disney villain. And he wasn't whiny at all, I don't get why people say that. He's sarcastic and rude, but not whiny. He is shown to be a terrible leader, and he has great motivations, and he truly believed he would be a great king. I can actually see his point of view. And Jeremy Irons, just perfect.

Thank you for not forgetting about Chernobogg!! I was so creeped out by him as a kid and loved Fantasia. Very underrated and for gotten about nowadays.

He's supposed to have goat horns and a lower-half of a goat in some parts of the Bible, was the snake in the garden of Eden, and of course he is a fallen angel so he would also probably have an appearance similar to the Biblical descriptions of angels (Multiple faces, giant multiple pairs of wings, freakish skulls... Actual Biblical angels are horrifying (hence the whole "don't be scared, we have good news!" thing in the story of the birth of Christ).) You're saying because it isn't the Biblical description of the devil it isn't the modern depiction of the devil as a muscular figure with horns and enormous bat wings? The image of the devil as strong in build and batlike comes from his depiction as a fallen angel in _Paradise Lost_, the Biblical depictions are mostly Christian writers badmouthing rival deities, and the serpent in the garden isn't actually supposed to be the devil since the Jewish Bible doesn't really _have_ the figure of the Christian devil (the figure called Satan back then was a servant of God who existed to test mortals, not a rival, and the serpent was just a lizard that got turned into a snake).
This still doesn't change the fact that we don't really know if Chernobog was even a real deity, nevermind what he was supposed to look like, and that the figure in the movie's only claim to not being the devil is that he isn't in hell.
The devil's real name is Chernabog and he was one of the bosses in the final world of the first Kingdom Hearts game and, man, was he tough to beat.
The name "Chernabog" means "black god", so that would still make him the Devil. Also, a quote from the movie itself "Bald mountain is gathering place of Satan and his followers".

Even as a kid, no matter how much I loved Disney's rendition of Night on Bald Mountain, I never really understood the end. I always thought the devil hated the sunlight, which meant an end to his fun. The people walking with candles confused me the most. I always figured they were early risers who wanted to take a walk. Even though he didn't like the light, he still curled up rather peacefully to get some rest. I always liked that aspect. I knew he was supposed to be evil, but never really saw him do anything really that bad. To me, it seemed more like the demons and ghosts were all vying for his attention, which annoyed the devil. So I kinda understood why he dropped them and tried to swat them away. That was my child mind making sense of the scenario, and even today, it still kinda makes sense. I didn't grow up religious, so I didn't have "the devil is evil due to such and such religious reasoning" background, so my mind was free to interpret what I saw without any preconceived notions on the subject.
Remember how the Disney Channel used to have tons of awesome programming on during Halloween in the 80s? I remember feeling so sad when they stopped. Remember that one animations where the old lady's cat kept staring at her, which freaked her out? Like the cat was evil or something. XD The lady freaking out freaked me out more than the cat. I always wondered why she got so scared of her cat just because it was looking at her. Cats do that all the time.
I'm actually looking forward to the two upcoming live action Jungle Book movies, especially Andy Serkis' Jungle Book Origins. Why? Five words: Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan! You could not ask for a better replacement to George Sanders! Sorry, Idris Elba, I love ya, but Sherlock is a far better fit for the role - he's got the voice, he's got the mannerisms, he's got the class and he's got the ferocity.

I'm always surprised that the Hun leader guy from Mulan (his name escapes me at the moment) isn't on these kinds of lists. First, he invades China because the Great Wall was basically a double-dog dare for him. He then proceeds to murder everyone he encounters, including an entire village of people because he found a little girl's doll and said they should "return it to her". And then, even AFTER his army is reduced to less than a dozen guys, still manages to infiltrate the capital and capture the freaking Emporer. Cultural and historical issues aside, that guy was one sadistic bastard with an impressive body count.
He talks about him in his Disneycember review of Mulan. He says that he is not an interesting or memorable character, in spite of his ruthlessness. I have to agree with him there. Not that I have a problem with Shan-Yu, but other than the fact that he does those horrible things, there's really nothing noteworthy about him.
Sadly I have to agree, he’s very forgettable. But, what I found memorable was his death.
I'm actually more surprised that he left out the OTHER great Disney villains, such as Lotso Huggin Bear and Syndrome. Bill Cipher is also a pretty good runner-up as well.

For those who don't know, the evil laughter in between the segments was the voice of James Earl Jones as the Red Wizard Ommadon from Flight of Dragons (1982). Good stuff! Fun fantasy kids film.
Yep. Excellent film. One of my favorite villains from a non-Disney film.
This was the first Nostalgia Critic review I ever saw in the summer of 2011 when I came across it on TH-cam because of my love and nostalgia for Disney coming back when I was 14. Now I'm 27 and I would never know that 12 years later I'm still a fan of the same youtuber who did this list way back in 2008 and would become my top n°1 influencer ever since then from teenagehood to adulthood for better or worse.

Malificent didn’t curse Aurora/Sleeping Beauty because of a mere “harmless snub”. This is based on medieval times, so use Game of Thrones-esque logic here. It was a royal christening, not a private birthday party, and it’s a huge event that everyone important was invited to, whether the rulers liked them or not. By inviting other fairies and excluding her, it was a deadly insult, essentially an act of war. She even gives them a chance to apologize when she first arrives, but when they scorn her further, she gets rightfully pissed and curses the baby.

OK, let me just say that I'm kinda shocked Judge Doom isn't considered one of the great villains. He killed two characters that had to do with both main characters, and tested out a tool of genocide by showing how it works with an innocent creature. Oh, and if you aren't convinced, in a draft of the script, Judge Doom was revealed to be the man who killed Bambi's mom.

Every one of these villains are my absolute childhood! They're the reason why I got into Disney in the first place! Whenever I watch the movies they appear in, I always root for them, nonstop! Hoping they would win!

I love how youtube adverts and the video can link so well. It was an advert for that golem movie and it goes "before the ripper, fear had another name" then I skip the ad and what is the name we hear first? "Hello, i'm the nostalgia critic". Funny.
3:40, to be fair, that was always the point of his characterization. Simba sings about how much he wants to be King “I just can’t wait to be King” and Scar sings “Be Prepared” about how he’s had enough of waiting to be king and wants to seize the throne. Simba boasts that once he’s king he’ll be able to do whatever he wants. Scar brags that as King he can do whatever he wants. They’re both characters who cover the power of the king but don’t understand the responsibilities with which Kings are burdened, the only difference being that Simba learns his lesson and Scar doesn’t.

Autobot Productions You're right in that regard. His design was really cool and the nanobots were too, but I don't think that makes him a great villain at all. I thought he was really bland and not memorable at all. But that's just my opinion, I can kind of understand why you'd think he should be on the list, but I disagree.
You know it's bad when your bullets bounce right off that kind of steel. xD
An NC video you keep coming back to. I've always liked Scar, but NC makes a good point about Shere Khan being a good villain. This vid makes me think I should see "The Great Mouse Detective". Ratigan sounds compelling to watch!

What makes it more chilling is that he's the most realistic villain.
a fan of scar but I understand Doug's comments on him. He is cunning but in a high-toned manner with a lofty accent, proud, ambitious, sarcastic, orders the hyenas to do the dirty job, which makes him an interesting character.
but after ascending to the throne he's just a bad ruler, neglecting the pride's prey issues, simply letting the hyenas have it there way just because they took sides on Scar.

Scott Sandler I remember in the one where NC did a top 10 on villian songs, he had put facilier in the list and mentioned that "its a shame it came out when it did because I would have defenatly put him on the top 11 disney villains"
Scott Sandler I think he said in the 'Top 11 Villain Songs', which came out a little while after, that he would have put Dr. Facilier on this list, if the film had come out before.
Hell maybe even Lotso at number 11 because he's the best Pixar villain to come since the acquisition
+Scott Sandler Hans' villainous side is shoehorned in near the end of the movie, so he doesn't count, but I would've loved to see Dr. Facilier on the list.

7:15, one thing I like about Professor Ratigan is that even though he’s basically a supervillain, he never once explains his evil plan to his henchmen since they already know or to the heroes (because doing so serves no purpose.) So the characters/audience have to figure it out for themselves (or wait patiently until the climax.)

My favorite is Frollo just because of all his evil doings, what did Cinderella's step mother do? Not much, just make one random girl miserable by having her do chores and forbidding her from going outside. What did Maleficent do? Not much either, just cast a spell on Aurora, she even gave her time and a cure, if she wanted to she could've just killed her right there, only when her time was due is when she went ballistic trying to keep her sleeping. Frollo on the other hand:
*Killed a gypsy woman trying to steal her baby, was about to throw said baby in a well and would have if it wasn't for the priest.
*Locked that baby away and taught him he was a monster and he was basically a servant who wasn't allowed to go out.
*Wanted to kill Esmeralda just because she stood up against him for Quasi and basically declared death to all gypsies after that.
*Started genocide all around Paris because of this tiny thing he was saying it was in the name of God
*Told Phoebus to burn a house and when he refused he burned the house himself, when Phoebus helped the family get out safely he was sentenced to death and he only survived because they thought he was already dead.
*Used Quasimodo as a tool to find the gypsies and made him feel guilty for it but even then he sent him to be locked away
*Burned Esmeralda alive just because she refused to sleep with him
*When Quasimodo was mourning Esmeralda's death he was pretending to be sympathetic while in fact he was about to stab him in the back
*AND even till his last moment, he kept thinking he was doing the right thing...
How on earth is he not the best/worst Disney villain? Not even the devil himself can top this!
