    I love the 16th. I had a boyfriend who came from a very fine family who lived there. It’s very chic and not full of tourists and tourist traps.

      I don't believe we crossed over into the 16th, which I believe is on the opposite side of the Arce De Triomphe from the Champs Elysées . We have also heard that it is beautiful there and will have to go and see it when we are in Paris in October.

      16th used to be where all the American expats tended to live- those with money or really good jobs. I lived in the 17th as a student years ago. It’s completely different but also very nice. I attended ParisIV (Sorbonne) and the Ecole du Louvre. Used the metro every day to get to and from classes. Cafes Deux Maggots and de Flore! I hardly ever went there but did try them - very touristy.

    Each arrondissement is actually further divided in quarters, called “quartiers” in French, and they all have names. For example, the 6th arrondissement is divided into: Saint-Germain des Prés, Monnaie, Odéon and Notre-Dame-des-Champs. It can be really helpful when looking at real estate to know which corner of the arrondissement feels like home. 💕

    • @kjandtonylovefrance
      @kjandtonylovefrance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but just to confirm, the quartiers have names but the arrondissements do not. Definitely is helpful to know about the different neighborhoods and "quartiers." Thank you, Nadia.

      @@kjandtonylovefrance right! Arrondissements are numbered, and quartiers are named. My fave is Enfants Rouges in the 3rd - it’s where all the good food + coffee are. 😊

      @@nadia.lewis. Arrondissements are numbered and name as quartiers have names and nos. 20 arrondissement and 80 quartiers or 4 neighborhoods per district. For example, The 1éme is call the Louvre by locals even if rarely seen in publications all have a local name I worked here, and the neighborhoods or quartiers are Saint Germain l'Auxerrois as no 1, Halles no 2, Palais-Royal no 3 and Place Vendôme as no 4. Local people talking with us tell us where they live by the quartier. Salut

    It's really nice to give a quick run-through of the arrondissements. If moving to Paris, check the safety aspects of each arrondissement too, or the quartiers to avoid within an arrondissement too. It can affect your insurance too.

    My favorites are 1,3,8 and 9. Every district has much to recommend it. My favorite city garden is the Tuileries. Th walk through the garden from the Louvre to Concorde and the Orangerie museum is so lovely. You are right about the Metro and the stairs which is one reason I use the bus in Paris. They are as convenient and the view from a bus is much nicer than the view in a tunnel. 🙂

    KJ & Tony: I admire your gumption in learning French. Here is a suggestion, given in deep respect: you should consider drills for how to pronounce vowels, specifically - an, en, in, on - that end hundreds of words in French. Once you get those down, you’ll be ahead of your game. Also learn which consonants at ends of words are pronounced - hint, very few. Finally, unlike Spanish or Italian, French doesn’t pronounce all syllables, making it easier in a way than some other latin languages. Good luck in your language learning curve!

      Or you can go the middle road and pronounce it “sore bone” like my husband does LOL. (I haven’t had the heart yet to tell him! He’s trying, bless his heart. Knowing Spanish is almost a hindrance because in Spanish every syllable is pronounced, if not every single letter.)

      If you wear anything ostentatious, the risk goes up, also if it's easy to take. Necklaces and bracelets are easy to take. If you are visiting, then you don't necessarily know the codes; that is true for anyway but it can make you vulnerable. Common sense protects you fairly well.😊

    I wouldn’t worry too much about your French at this juncture. Be confident, be bold, be committed and you will do well. Arrondissement is pronounced with ‘dees’ because of the ‘i’ and the ending ‘t’ is silent.” It’s all good .. everyone will know what you are meaning to say. The 10th is a cool arrondissement, and the canal is a nice place for a stroll on a sunny afternoon. That being said, the 10th is also where some very infamous pickpocketing areas are, so it’s best to keep your wits about you and use all your precautions (money belt, wallet and phone out of sight, wary on and near the Metro and stations).

      @@kjandtonylovefrance It seems like y'all have learned a lot of vocabulary so that's good! I am not sure what kind of course you are taking, but it is a good idea to repeat the course or find a better course. I repeated French I after a 2 year break from middle to high school. Your course needs to teach you more of the general pronunciation rules such as that double l as in ville is pronounced as a y and the e on the end of pere is silent. It is best to have a live teacher who can correct your pronunciation. You can also record yourself to see if you sound like the words that you are repeating (I assume that there is spoken language drill as part of the course). A good course will include all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As psych people you probably know that it is more difficult to learn a language as an adult versus as a child. I am proud of your progress and your desire to correctly pronounce the words.
