How can you not be moved by the line "all your frinends and family think that that you lucky, but the side of you that they never see is when your left alone with the memoies that hold your life together like gule"
Been crazy about music for 49 years now. Have a massive collection and play the guitar for 30 years. If I was only allowed one album on a desert island it would be The The. Matts lyrics fit the rhythms like a glove. There's some serious magick going on that few songwriters can do at this level. Dudes like Dylan. They get in your head like a brain virus and you're doomed to sing them in the car whilst, you're doing the washing up. I would saw my leg off before I let my The The albums go. I don't gush willy-nilly but this dude blows my wig.
Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days You pull back the curtain And the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying Across a clear blue sky This is the day, your life will surely change This is the day, when things fall into place You could have done anything, if you wanted And all your friends and family think that you're lucky But the side of you they'll never see Is when you're left alone with your memories That hold your life together, like glue
As a huge The The fan i love this version, for me its very clever to strip this back and use a ‘bontempi’ type keyboard like most kids had in their bedrooms in the 80s - suits the message and tone of the song beautifully. And wow what incredible harmonica playing!
Matt used a suzuki omnichord to make the backing for this track. They came out in the late 70s/early 80s. You can see kenny everett using one on his tv show on yt somewhere. But matt has used his omnichord on the dusk tour and to record some of his later songs....'i want 2 b u', and 'that was the day' to name two of em...theyre a quirky little weird shaped synth...
God Bless, this song means so very much. Soul Mining, in the player as I drove every morning for 2 weeks till Mom passed. The stop light at Grant Boulevard and Bell avenue, was very long and song 4 every day. I count not listen to this for over 15 years, god I miss my Mom and Dad, so so much.
I relate with this song. This song talks about how you waste away your life and wish for things to change without doing anything. The only thing that keeps you sane are you previous achievements .
I think it was the whole wallowing in your bedroom feeling sorry for yourself vibe, a few of us in the eighties had a bontempi keyboard - a genus idea if you ask me!

This obscure album gave us two quintessential tracks of the 80's - This is The Day and Uncertain Smile. Just love this man and his music.
This is the day, when things fall into place...
Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back the curtain
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue

This was a new version of the song "This Is The Day" from the 1983 album Soul Mining, a decade later.
DJ Grim Exact! This one is part of the soundtrack of the movie THREESOME! :) 🌟 👍

Jim Fitting is the harmonica player on this version
yes...
Does ANYONE know how to play this on the harmonica? Been trying but can’t get it
You can get harmonicas in different keys, that's probably your issue. This is B flat I think.
“Tengo una remera del Che y no sé por qué!”

I wish I knew the name of the harp player. Awesome.
11 years a little late, but his name is Jim Fitting.
@@jimjammy1788 haha. Yeah but thanks anyway. I found his name and contacted him. Talented and a nice guy.
@@jimjammy1788 Never too late, Jim, never too late, as this song exemplifies. 👍
I was curious if there was any band already called "The The", so I googled it and here I am.
Giovani Girafale hahaha
And you found one of the 80's best musicians
It would be cool if people knew about great music definitely this way. ;-)
And that's one hell of a band
lucky you : )
I'm not sure what he was getting with the Bontempi backing track
