M Akhtar- Yes, However as the plants are going in to a dormancy it would be best to wait until they wake up in the spring when both shoot and root growth is active.

I am using an umbrella to give my fig some shade and also to divert the rain until the pot it is in dries out some. It is doing much better and the leaves have now stopped drooping.
Just watched your excellent video. I had just potted two 3 gallon figs into new 15 gallon pots. Mixed loamy leaf mulch into potting mix. Now I'm concerned about nematodes! Ughh,lol.
Why dont you try planting Marigolds arouund the fig. I understand marigolds are nematode fighting plants.

I have flush growth but the figs are small and don't seem to get bigger.
I near Bristol UK and I have two large figs in the ground and one one smaller tree - all now 3yrs old and this is the first year the larger trees are fruiting . I have no idea what the variety for is for any of them, The smaller I bought but the other two just materialised in pots which I was using for sweet pea flowers ! One of the larger trees has produced a "breber" crop which is on last years wood, these figs are drying up and falling off. Thankfully all three now have pin head sized fruit on this years wood. I have looked at the video on pinching off the growing tips to force fruit growth instead of wood. Thanks for your information.

Hi! I have a tree in a container and it dropped all the fruits now. Why is that? And it didn't grow a lot this year, is the container small for it and should be changed for bigger one?
My potted fig was doing very nicely and several figs have ripened and I have enjoyed them. However, after recent rains here in Central New York State my fig, which has many small figs on it, has drooped. Last weekend it drooped but revived and was fine until today (Wednesday) and it has not revived. The potting mix it is planted in is very wet. Should I add dry potting mix or repot the fig entirely? Or what do you suggest?
Sounds like root rot from too much water. If it’s in a plastic pot put it in a clay pot, not glazed. And get it out of the rain, water only when the soil looks visually dry on the surface. See fi it will recover. Could be tough one to revive. Don’t feed. Repotting will not help, you need to see if there are some live roots that can regenerate the plant and giving it dryer soil will help with that. - sorry to the late reply.

I have an LSU Gold Fig in an outdoor pot. I live in southern Louisiana where there is much rainfall. The leaves are consequently yellowing. Should I apply a fertilizer and what kind ? I eventually intend to plan it after removing a tree.

Wait to repot as repotting while fruiting can cause the fruit to fall due to stress.

Figs if grown from a cutting from a fruiting plant will after the first season start fruiting on the new growth. Just give them sun and if in a pot a little fertilizer and you’ll have figs.
I live in upstate N.Y. can I keep my fig tree inside near a sunny window and will they still go dormant and lose leaves? Its about 1 yr. old lots of leaves , no fruit will fruit come nxt.year
+Susan Flores The answer is yes but if it is warm that is above 60 degrees they may not drop their leaves. Should fruit next year.

Any well-draining soil free from slow release fertilizers is best :)
I am growing figs for the first time this year, Black Mission, Chicago Hardy and plan on putting them in 15 gallon pots and wanted to know if I could mix aged horse manure and ashes from my wood stove along with wood chips and native soil for my potting mix.
Be careful of mixing wood ashes into a potting mix. It can make the mix excessively alkaline. Well-rotted horse manure is ok just don’t overdo it. And generally we don’t use topsoil as it can contain nematodes and pathogens. But that depends on where it comes from. Wood chip can suck up nitrogen as they break down so is you use them you might need to up you nitrogen fertilizer.
What kind fig tree would make fruit in early age as your? I like to have one or where can i purchase one? Home depot or Nursery shop.

+Poo Face Possible but it will take a long time. Also the quality of the final fruit will be variable. Better to buy a cutting grown plant that will fruit next year and you will know the fruit was selected for desirable characteristics.

Your figs will ripen in late summer which is now. They will live fine in pots as long as you can keep them in a cool situation. Preferably with night temperatures in the 30’ to 50’s. They go into a dormancy in winter and the cool temperatures induces that. If cool enough and that is mid-20 to 40’s they will drop their leaves which is normal for this plant.

Greetings from Southern California. Sorry I’m late to this site, but I’m looking here to see what I can do for a 6” fig cutting I planted last July in a pot. It is now October and the plant is about 2 ft. high with nice full leaves in full sun. It’s in a 12” pot. Should I leave it alone now? Or transplant to bigger pot? (I have no more space in ground) I don’t know what name it is, but fruit was dark-and so delicious.I stole it off a tree as I was walking.
You can repot when you start to notice some of the roots coming out of the bottom of the drainage hole.

The yellow long neck is grown from cutting and will be approximately 8-10 inches tall upon arrival.
Where is the best place to put a fig tree in the winter and should I wrap it? I live in southern ny state.
If it’s in a pot you can bring it inside. If light is a rarer commodity then they can be left to go dormant as the first freezes come and then once the leaves are off and the temperatures are cooler you can move it into a garage or building that get little heart and warp it. This can also be done with plants that are in the ground. If in pot be sure to mulch the pots heavily as you don’t want the roots to freeze much.

They can grow in a pot for quite awhile without any issues :)
And if (when) they start to grow too tall, learn how to air-layer. Do the air layer about halfway up. Once it roots in the air-layer, cut it off and repot the new rooted half. Now you have two trees.
Hello Byron, I wonder if you could please help me, I was given a fig tree that was called (obviously) Ficus Carica but also had the name "Jordan Fig" on the greenhouse tag. I cannot, with all google searches etc, seem to find good information pertaining to this "Jordan" variety! Do you by any chance know about this variety, or perhaps know if this variety also goes by another moniker? Any thoughts would be appreciated! And, I wish I could patronize Logees … you seem to have so many of the beautiful plants I wish to have and cannot find around here in Alberta Canada, and more importantly you have such good and intelligent information on these plants. Love your videos and love that you actually use and give us the latin names so as to eliminate any confusion. Thank you!

Jordan is a variety commonly grown in the UK, it's a purple fig with red flesh, very hardy and a nice taste
My young ( 2 ft.) fig is growing lots of little shoots by the roots. Should I clip them, its taking all the nutrients from the 3 main branch.
It really doesn’t harm the plant or limit its growth. They are grown from tissue culture and from basal shoots. You can clip them off so it forms an upright structure rather than a bush.
Hi. I planted 2 different kind of figs in my backyard and they are brown turkey and scotts black about 2 years now. From they were so small and now it is about 7 ft tall BUT NO FIG at all. I mulch them all when is winter and I also pinch them too. No figs still but so tall and beautiful. Please help 😭😭
Are they growing in full sun? When do you pinch them. And did the plants come from cuttings originally?
Hi, I have a Brown Turkey Fig Tree, maybe 9 years old. I live on the Central Oregon Coast (in the Pacific Northwest) and on a NE corner lot so the fig tree gets the ocean wind. The weather is mild, maybe in the high 60's through the summer. The figs rarely have a chance to ripen before the temperature drops. The landscaper planted the fig tree in the month of July. Would that have anything to do with the late growth? Any suggestions are appreciated.
The delayed growth is definitely due to the late planting. You might start to see fruit come next year and have better luck.
@@LogeesPlants Grow a Desert King and/or a Lattarula variety for fruit production. I am near Portland where these are the 2-primary varieties you'll see.
Thanks for the video. My question is about fertilizing. I am in zone 6 and I grow my figs in containers. I fertilize with half strong Miracle Grow, once a week. When is the good time to start in spring fertilizing and when is time to stop fertilizing in summer ?
Stop in August and start once they initiate new growth in the spring.
what variety is your fig plant that bear that soon?
Because they are grown from cuttings from fruiting plants most all figs will fruit the first year.

Might be to cool to ripen them. They need it warm above 60 or higher for the most part for the fruit to ripen.
you need to cut all the leaves and buds, just leave the fruits so all the nutrients go straight to the fruits then it will start ripening. Hope this help.

Any of the Dr. Earth organic fertilizers will work.

I just bought a bunch of figs ranging from 4 inch to 3 gallon pots, some of them have lots of fruits. Should I wait until the end of season (frost date is estimated to be mid December) to up-pot to maybe 10 gallon? or can I transplant now? I'm in zone 9b
We wouldn't suggest re-potting into a such large pots. If you put them into such large containers, the roots, over the dormant months, will have difficulty growing into the large pot. The plant may not end up taking up the necessary nutrients in the soil. We generally suggest to slowly increase the pot size so that the plant isn't putting all of its energy into growing roots to fill the pot, but rather putting energy into the foliage, flowers, and eventually fruits!
@@LogeesPlants wouldn't upot to a large container kinda the same as putting it in ground? I'm sorry if I sound nitpicking but I just want to understand the nature of root growth since I'm a beginner and trying to learn as much as I can
With potting soil, the roots continue to reach out, however, when the plant is in the ground, the soil is much more firm and will allow for the plant to put a lot of growth out above the soil line, generally much quicker than a potted plant that is put in too large of a pot.
I have a Chicago Fig that was outside but I potted it last fall. I kept it in the garage over the winter where it didn't freeze but was pretty cold. Right now it has leaves and just one fig. It is a very tall plant with about 5 stems and maybe 3 or 4 feet high. The roots were very large in the garden and I did plant it in a very large pot. Do you think this will work out? It looks healthy now and we are babying it by putting it back in the garage if it gets really windy outside. We live in Holland Michigan. Thank you for your great video. I really enjoyed it. Can I use Miracle Gro for fertilizer?
nancy nowak Sounds good. I would leave it outside and let it adjust to the wind. If it’s in a pot keep it in the hottest spot you have to help increase the degree days. That will help the fruit to ripen. Large pot is ok.

I live in NJ, zone 6b/7a and I have indoor grow lights for starting vegetable seedlings ahead of Summer. Is it ok to keep smaller/younger fig trees inside under the grow lamps year-round, or do they need that winter dormancy period?
It's ok to not have them go into dormancy, however, it will affect the fruit production. We've found that they produce more when they are allowed to go into a dormancy during the winter time.

Since this is my oldest tree’s 3rd winter and the last two winters it was sheltered indoors, and I have yet to see a single fig, I’m putting it in a small storage shed outside this year. I’m keeping them indoors for their first year because I’m afraid they might not withstand the cold at their small stature. They can be grown from seed but you would need to collect the seed form the fruit and then plant it. Store figs won't work. Really don’t know of anyone that is raising figs form seed.
I actually managed to grow a fig plant from the seeds of a dried Turkish fig bought from a supermarket.
