Please, please PLEASE connect those indicators!! 😂 Maybe the break lights to the horn?! Would love to see it! Keep making your fantastic content!! Linda and Leigh.
Hi Danni, Joe. The bike rack on the stern of the boat, what a great idea. I was on the edge of my seat, thinking "don't let it drop in the water" (easily done), (or even the drill). I would not trust myself, I would have put a wire/rope to the drill/rack, just in case ? Loving the DanniJoe number-plates. Great Vlog as always. Thank you. Spoolbox.
I was pointing at the screen when you asked where’s your keys…I had seen those slipping into the engine bay at some point lol. Good solution for the bikes. ❤
I love your channel. You're very industrious. Belts can slip if the belt is too narrow for the pulleys. Boat belts are usually thicker than a car belt. If you have the wrong size and it sits right at the bottom of the vee slot in the pulley, it will never grip tight enough to not slip. There has to be a gap between the inside edge of the belt and the base of the pulley groove.
Thanks yeah I did read that, this seems to sit OK - the Boatyard had toothed ones which I’ve tried and seems to be much better - I’ve also cleaned the pulleys somewhat properly which I think has helped
Get the lights wired, and perhaps a few spots for the front, oh and a straight through exhaust.....lol. by the way, 6.35min in, dodgy looking couple passing on the Anglo Welsh boat. Must tell the wife we're famous! 😂
Great video . As for the belt issue try checking the V pulley for wear it might be worn out and the belt is sitting to far in the groove causing it to slip . Or your belt is to skinny and not grabbing the edge wall of the pulley where all the friction is at . What I found with replacing belts on snowblower. Keep dry best of luck.
Wow!…..that’s a brilliant solution for the bikes. No more worries about getting caught under low bridges. I like your idea Joe of wiring up the indicators and lights. That would look really cool. You could have some good fun with that. Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to your next shenanigans.
Hi Joe just noticed that your engine is with out a oil filler cap Very dangerous as hot oil vapour can cause a fire or in bad cases expload I have seen a couple of cars that have done as the DIY oil change lost it and didn't think it matters Stay safe and Gary Good show
That was a great vlog…just love when you post your weekly shenanigans. Clever you, what a much better use of space…Danni you can have more plants on the roof now..just saying😅
Loved your bike rack - great bit of DIY. Quick question. Will you do anything about your fender to stop any potential crush accidents happening to your bikes? Have always wondered how those are prevented. We've not travelled with our bikes yet being leisure boaters
Yeah I need to figure something out, mainly for if we touch other boats with it I’m more concerned. If a £40 bike rack gets bent I’m not too worried - just if it hurts anyone else’s boat!
Hi guys, that looks like a 1500 BMC…? If so I have one in my boat as well, I had to upgrade my pulley and belt set up from the standard 9mm too 13mm as I was getting belt slip as well, mainly because I have 3x 130ah AGM batts being charged via Victron 30amp dc to dc charger. The crankshaft pulley was the most expensive but the water pump and alternator pulleys are quite easy to come by. It has totally cured my slipping and the belts last a lot longer. 👍🏻
Yeah 1500! Thanks for that, probably a good route for us to go down regardless, I’ve got a toothed belt on now and touch wood it’s a lot better for now
On the alternator do you know for sure you aren't overloading the alternator? The pulley and belt are designed to deliver enough torque to the alternator. If you are charging, say, a big bank of LiFePO4 batteries you might find that they can overload the alternator. This might make the belt slip ... Just an idea.
I’ve put on a toothed belt now which seems to be doing the job but I guess it’s probably at its maximum to be causing such an issue to keep tension. The alternators a 75a (I upgraded from the standard), it’s only fed through a 30a DC charger to the battery bank and goes directly through the starter battery so not masses of power coming out if it actually
My first trip to the English countryside, and I got stung on my foot by the nettles. My lovely host, husband's auntie, showed me how to use a dock leaf.
@@ItsOhJoeI think I know why the alternator keeps slipping probably related to the fact the tension is set in such a way that it will always try to loosen where the hinge point is.
It's genius until the bikes get crunched, then it's...less brilliant. Those bow and stern bumpers serve a purpose. When you took the stern bumper off, the post on which it mounts was bent downwards which shows that the stern had already taken a stout blow. Anyway, great idea but likely an accident in the making.
Yeah it’s probably will happen at some point, we’ve been extra careful in locks & haven’t had any issues even after tackling Caen Hill flight I guess being a 40 year old boat it’s bound to have had a bad knock once upon a time, I did wonder how that’d bent!
Tow ball and car bike rack is a great temporary storage solution in summer. Trouble with those is you hit something and they fold on the ball and tilt (usually down) and your bikes end up in the canal or drowned under lock gates. A better longer term solution is a W platform (3 tips of the W bolted to the boat) made from aluminium (or thin steel u) bolted to the stern and decking planks laid on top, this acts as a larger area for the bikes (and less chance of dropping one in the canal), also better rear crash protection in locks. Friend of mine back in the early 2000's done this setup on his 52 and used the 6ft x 4ft deck for his bike and spare fuel which worked a treat, and being removable with 6 bolts it does not add to the official 'built length' or mooring length of the boat.
Thanks for that, yeah we’ve noticed it in locks being a bit of a pain as to how flimsy the bike rack is compared to the rest of the boat. I’ll take a look into that for the future possibly!
Have you given thought to one of those electric stand up scooters to be able to go and get the car and bring it to the boat. Be much easier to pack out.
They’ve literally just been banned from tow paths believe it or not! Think I read an article just the other day. But yeah those would be ideal to keep inside out the way. They’re not allowed on our roads either (only the ones you pay to rent as they have a tiny reg plate)
Hadn’t really thought of that, although being removable it’ll be coming off in any permanent moorings we may use. I did the maths and if it is classed as a permanent extension then if it’s pro rats it’ll be £60 a year / £5 a month
The question is, what do you use the bikes for? Is it just poodling along the tow path, looking for wine and collecting water or do you go hardcore puffing up muddy mountains?
@@steveelkins52 we’ve tried folding bikes before & keeping inside a 30ft cabin space just didn’t work really. We want to continue long distance cycling trips whilst on the boat so this was about the only option
That’s good but there is a reason there are fenders on the back of boats a lot of people have this bike set up but extend the back fender to protect it obviously it’s up to you and I’m not criticising just passing on my experiences especially in single locks
Hi Joe, job done ,like it and works a treet. By the way I would,nt use that belt slip spray. I used it not so lo g ago on my wohnmobil. Its as sticky as hell Nd .akes a terible mess of your engine. All the best Steve from Germany
Thanks Steve yeah I did try a bit and wasn’t sure if I wanted to cover the entire lot in the stuff so cleaned off and using a toothed belt now seems better!
I don't know why you didn't just weld the bike stand without the ball hitch above your knotted stopper, at least then you won't damage your bike or the holder if you reverse into anything,or if someone bumps into you.
@@ItsOhJoe fair enough, proof is in the eating as they say & as you haven't had any problems then it's a clever solution, plus with the ball hitch I suppose you could come up with sum sort of floating trailer aswell perhaps, all the best ,hope we may come across one another some day.🙂
Yip, that's stupid. They'll get ripped off by the lock gates and also invalidate your license as you've effectively lengthened the boat! Get folding bikes, you're not the first...
We tackled Caen Hill flight without issue, definitely takes more concentration though. Ref the license I’m going to message CRT & see what they say as its 3ft which equals an extra £5 per month / £60 a year is all (if it’s pro rata). We tried folding bikes and didn’t get on well, we cycle fair distances and plan another European trip with the bikes so need full sized.
Bored of the bikes being in the way on the stern & scratching my roof every couple of days when we have to ride them to pick the car up. Half a days work is all it took

Tooth Belt required. They grip pulley. Ps now you can tow a caravan. Long bike chain around prop. Pedal powered prop. 😂George
