for the avoiding checks point, just remember knights are the opposite of bishops; they change square colour every move, as well as having limited range and unblockability.
Basically, put your king on the same color square as your opponent’s knight if you don’t wanna be checked by it To avoid getting forked by a knight, remember to put your pieces and king on different colored squares from each other - that’s the best counter for knight forks In essence, when you’re dealing with knights you always want to keep an eye on the squares your pieces are on, since that’s what knights are all about - they’re pieces that specialize in square color play
I got the queen sac, knight smothered checkmate in a game for the first time yesterday. Was so excited lol. I’ve done that 50 times in puzzles, but never see it in game.
I never had the smothered mate moments, but I had another way of rare checkmates. Its like Kd7+, the king has a rook on c8, and three pawns on c7, b7, and a7, and it mist to gi to h8. We have two connected rooks on the first horizontal, and one of them stays on a1, and we sac the rook for a pawn, and mate the king with another rook. I hope I explained it normally, I met this mate many times in puzzles, but very rarely in real games
I won using the Traxler today during a bullet game. My opponent was completely unprepared and resigned 10 moves in. They only had like 9 seconds left and I had only used 9 seconds. I got 100% accuracy and a brilliant for the knight sacrifice on g3 move. I learned it all from your channel. Thanks!
The Traxler!!! I purposely learned the Fried Liver so my friend could play the Traxler against me LOL. It was a lot of fun and leads to such a devastating and interesting position!
@@RepentInReprise I know right? It's so wild. I cross my fingers every game as black hoping white tries it. As white, I cross my fingers hoping black allows a four knights game so I can use the Halloween gambit. Again, something I learned from this channel.
7:33 what you call the sneaky pawn grab, i call "The boomerang trick". it can also be done with other pieces like a bishop, if the bishop can grab something and in an exhange and that piece the bishop is grabbing looks defended by for intsance a pawn, if the opponent then has to do a intremezzo, capturing something, the bishop can boomerang back and take back on a piece they took.. saving the bishop from beeing captured by the pawn. I call it the boomerang as its a pices you throw out to the dogs usualy its a discovery attack, then it come back having a double meal, when they did not get time to take it.
About the trick number 8, I literally just had a game this morning where I had the choice to either block a queen check with either the bishop or the knight, I blocked with the knight because I thought "haha no more queen checks" but I didnt know knights were this good at defending against queens like you said in the video. Thanks for pointing that out haha
I've won using the Legal's Mate after seeing the idea in Peter Patzer's rapid rating climb! In the game I actually expected bishop f7 to be mate, forgetting about the scpae route, but I soon saw the next move was mate
There is another important knight trick to think about: Forks. When you see pieces on the same colored squares, there may often be a potential fork. This is also an important clue for avoiding being forked yourself. One final tip is that if a piece is diagonally two squares away from another piece, even though they are on the same color, there will never be a knight fork. It’s the same idea that Nelson showed to avoid checks, just applied to forks using a little more forethought.
I can't tell you how many rook vs knight endgames I've lost to forks. The simple strategy - never put your rook on the same color square as your king- no need to calculate anything, you cannot be forked.
Love your channel and videos. For April Fool’s this year, you could do a puzzle with that digital timer you used in another video. But, have it be for 12 hours, go to work, sleep, etc, come back after 12 hours like nothing, “All right guys, get a chance to look at that?”
I love the knights, the knights are such a interesting and interesting piece as it can move in L’s, it can jump over other pieces, it is versatile, amongst other good factors, overall a very good piece in general. Good content. 🎉❤
Knights are also worth gold when in time trouble. Opponent can't afford to think too much where the knight will land and has to watch out for lots of checks and forks.
The other condition to look out for in the Legall’s trap is the d5 square has to be undefended also, so if black proved his pawn to c6, or the knight to e7, that would also prevent the mate as the knight needs to get to d5 to deliver the coup-de-gras. I’ve lost track of you many games I’ve won with this trick, even against higher rated players. The nifty part is understanding the tactic so you can get here from other king pawn openings. 😊
I call the sneaky pawn grab and similar situations "macrotrades" - they're usually executed so secretly that the opponents do not realize they're losing materials until the end of the match where that differences stack up.
I love all your videos. I’ve learnt so much from watching them. I’ve been playing chess for about a year now, and I hear other chess players talking about “breaking open the centre” but I never really understand why, when and how. I was wonder if you make a video to explain this?
1:28 Also worth noting that if they play 5…Nc6, even though the bishop is undefended, 6.Nxe5 still doesn't work, because 6…Nxe5 wins the knight and defends the bishop in one move.
There's another easy way to avoid checks that I will use in long-term endgame positions. You have the 2 squares diagonally away but if you move three squares away straight away from the knight, exact same effect and if I'm playing defensively that is sometimes slightly better because you can make it very difficult for their knights to have an impact when they are in your position.
I love my knights! They are my chess ninjas. I try to keep at least one knight for the endgame. A queen and a knight can deliver a forced mate in the corner in two or three moves.
Legal's trap also works with Nc6 (pedantic comment, it's not pronouced like the "legal law", I think it's "leg -gall") With Nc6 though, you have to play h3 and if the bishop goes back to bh4, you can knight capture in the middle (still the best move). If they take the queen you got the trap. If the knight on c6 takes the knight, you can take the bishop. The difference is that with h3 pushing the bishop back, the black knight capture will not defend the bishop. It's still +2/+3 for white
The hungry horse app is so underrated, I looked at my phone and it only has under 100 downloads, I hope the video gets spread and the app gets more at it deserves. I played some of the levels and it has a cute back story and the game has many good things, I left a 5 star review.
1:20 instead of taking the knight the black could just take the queen because of the knight on f6 which by controling the d5 square protect the king from the checkmate

The game is pretty fun.. what does it cost to upgrade ?
I couldn't find it on IOS 🥲
Did you develop this app Nelson?
I can,t
Is there a version for iPhone? Or any app like that?

Knights are kind of the opposite of every piece. They can attack every other piece from squares those pieces can't reach.
Hungry Horses is actually a great advertising strategy you incorporated into this video! Well done!
sadly im poor to pay for the upgrade to no ads and i have beaten the entire game in 10 mins
Sadly it’s not in App Store

the smothered mate is just so satisfying
Hey! I love this video! 👏👏 One of the bests i've ever seen in your channel! Good job!👌

Thanks for the important 400elo lesson.
Always great advice Teacher Nelson 😊 Thank you for this lesson. Hope you and yours are doing great ❤❤
The queen trap in tip 2 comes up in the Jobava London as well. I've had it many times because Queen b6 is a common move against the regular London.

Classic video on knight tricks so helpful
Thank you for the hungry horses tip I've always had problems seeing the knight moves.
that sponsorship made me think it was an actual trick lol, i mean it technically was..
a knight and advertising trick at the same time
Great lesson, Nelson.
I understand that Steinitz announced mate in 28! Hyper phenominal and amazing. Way past me but fun to see, eventually. Your teaching is interesting.
I’ve actually been looking for a way to get better at visualizing knight moves so Hungry Horses looks pretty interesting haha

I found the impractical mate with 3 Knights the best intermediate teaching aid to the Bishop & Knight mate.
You are an excellent teacher
A knight on the rim is grim, a knight in the corner is a gorner.
Can't get over the fact that I somehow got a queen sac smothered mate just like the thumbnail in an OTB tournament
Nelson always with useful and well done videos, hats off sir
Awesome video!!! thank you so much!! 🐎🐎🐎

Thanks for the new app, it looks fun.

Thank you for the great stuff once again, especially the trick moving the king to the knight
I get that number 2 queen trap all the time of a jobava London 😄
Great video, nice perspectives
Very nice!
Knight can provide more resources than bishop. Smothered mate, under promotion, cover both colour squares, gr8 at outpost etc
1:28 Also worth noting that if they play 5…Nc6, even though the bishop is undefended, 6.Nxe5 still doesn't work, because 6…Nxe5 wins the knight and defends the bishop in one move.
Great lessons and tricks, thanks!
Sir, this is so useful. Can you do with the other pieces as well...
Good video! Knights are so tricky.
didn't knew the name of the first one and in my mind was "oh no! My queen!! Gambit"
Trick #1 is to immediately take your opponent's night so you don't have these problems :)
I love my knights! They are my chess ninjas. I try to keep at least one knight for the endgame. A queen and a knight can deliver a forced mate in the corner in two or three moves.
Great tips!
the Na4 Queen trap was a smart idea!
Trick 3 - yes! Thanks ha, didn't know that and it's great.
Legal's trap also works with Nc6 (pedantic comment, it's not pronouced like the "legal law", I think it's "leg -gall")

I’ve lost several games where I’ve been in a strong winning position and the opponent’s knight has single handedly kicked my ass !!
great stuff
Very nice vid, thanks for all of it.
we did Queen Trap, it is amazing
the legals mate trap also does not work if something controls d5

14:12 Mit Springer auf f1, Matt gibt es keins. (if you are white and German).

Can you create those arrows in mobile?
Every move has a price.😎☝🏻
Don't understand how to catch the queen in case number six "poisoned pawn". Can anybody explain?
1:20 instead of taking the knight the black could just take the queen because of the knight on f6 which by controling the d5 square protect the king from the checkmate
and here I was thinking that 1. d5 in the 5th trick was the scariest in the world 😂😝
#1 why not bishop take whites queen after ta prawn take?

we wait for the opponent to waste a move okay i think its handy

I love knights. If you lose one of the bishops, the other one considerably loses value, AFAIC. This is not true regarding knights.
1:23 Can't he just take your queen? The horsey also protects from the mate.
