Hi Tom. I'm just turned 80 now and when I was a kid our annual holiday with an aunt in Beccles was the treat of the year. I was only about 7 when I first sailed a boat - a little luggage dinghy. Later I got used to half dockers like the one you sailed. I absolutely endorse all you say about them. Then we started hiring cabin cruisers from Hunters - lovely brown varnish and so well kept. When I was 19 I took a Hunters 2 berther ('Hustler') with just a mate from Ludham round some of the Northern Broads and then right down through Yarmouth and up to Bramerton near Norwich. No engine! (Halo gleaming!) And we got back to Ludham in one piece!
In those days the bypass bridge below Beccles wasn't there and even the occasional seagoing yacht would berth at the town Quay. That made our day. Thank you Tom for awaking fond memories.

Brother after my own heart as I too was introduced to sailing by surprise. I am an old sat but remember in detail that wonderful experience and how it flung me into the joy of sailing. And yes , I too was taken by the quiet propulsion.

Thanks Edward. There's nothing I'd like better than to make another series about sailing and the sea, but trying to get a TV program is like trying to shoot the sun on a cloudy day. In the meantime, you'll just have to make do with my home-made vids.

As a boy in the 1960's I used to read the "Swallows and Amazons" series by Arthur Ransome. I don't know what a half-decker is, but I suppose that's the sort of boat Ransome wrote about. It had a retractable keel for river sailing.

What a great story and the best way of learning is to do rather than talk about it. Taught myself to sail in similar circumstances. Bought a mirror dinghy last October and converting it for cruising on the broads, estuaries & such like. Main boat moored at Brightlingsea but wanted to get right back to pure basics with a wooden dinghy. Wonderful stuff.

First went on the Broads with my mate Ken in 1966 when we were 17 after reading Coot Club. We hired a 20 ft. two berth yacht called Reverie from Eastwood Whelpton having had limited experience sailing dinghies. It was the best holiday ever, even though I drained the spaghetti overboard and fell overboard myself the following day. Now at aged 69 I am considering buying a traditional Broads cabin yacht, visiting Hunter's boatyard last June. In the past I've thought about hiring a half-decker as a camping boat but decided on the relative comfort of a cruising yacht. You could well title your video 'Contentment'.

There's still something magic about the place isn't there. A trad yacht would be just lovely. No waves to worry about. Just a fair share of tranquility. Good luck

Hello Sir,I really enjoy your vids. They should have more of you on the TV,all your programs over the years have been most enjoyable.Your enthusiasm helped get me into sailing and I,as a newcomer did Rya 1 & 2 in the summer on the broads on a half decker like your sailing in this video. My family love the broads and always look forward to being there.Sailing as opposed to motor cruising has opened up a whole new world to us.We used to hire cruisers but when we took a sailing dinghy for evening fun it became more enjoyable than the motorcruiser. We now have a little gp14 wooden dinghy and are looking forward to hiring a larger boat for next year's holidays.
Thank you for your enthusiasm wearing off on me.You always come to mind when things get a bit frantic and thinking of your calm unruffled mannerisms help keep me on an even keel. Many thanks.

For some people it was Ransome but for my brother and I it was 'The Art of Coarse Sailing '. Not exactly inspirational but to us it was what it took. Dinghy camping up the Hamble , exploring the yet to be rediscovered J class forgotten on the mud, cooking freshly caught mackerel on Dorset beaches. Ransome came later. Over fifty years later I'm still getting everything ready yet again but now south and west Wales. Love the series.
    Lloyd Rumsey.

Thanks Lloyd. I was on the Hamble when Velsheda, Endeavour and Lulworth were laid up on the mud at Crableck Yard. I spent the winter of 1969/70 in their shadow refitting an ancient Baltic Trader. Happy days!

Now that’s the kind of boat I want to learn to sail on. Not the plastic fantastic things they have up my lake.

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns I like watching Roger Barnes boating Videos, and how he explains that his boat is basic but well equipped and he gets out sailing as many times as possible he even takes his small dingy over to France. Even sleeping in it as a tent.
