We are continuing or study of His Holiness the 14. Dalai Lamas book : Open the eyes of new awareness. We are still on chapter 4 Ethical conduct.
After a short meditation on the breath, Geshela continued with teaching about the vows of individual liberation. He explained to us how the higher training of ethics works through the vows of individual liberation.
He explained the 8 types of vows. 4 of them for male practitioners and 4 for female practitioners. There are vows for lay people, novice monks and nuns, probationary monks and nuns and fully ordained nuns. We are focusing on the lay vows as they are the ones relevant for us students.
The focus today was on the 1 day lay vows that you take for 24 hours. Geshela explained the etymology of the word (getting closer to virtue), the meaning and the benefits of the 1 day vows of individual liberation. He explained the 8 specific vows you are taking in details and how to take them.
We will continue with the full lay person vows on Wednesday.
