This is a true elegy of agony and sorrow over a failed relationship. I love this album version the best- I guess it has some influences from Chopin, Stravinsky, or Beethoven, in a classical sense (I mean both piano, viola and cello arrangements in this song are so haunting...). You choose which one. Jewel had such a soulful voice.
I can definitely hear the Beethoven characteristics in the piano. He was the first composer to use "rubato" in his piano compositions so his use of rubato was used sparingly just like in this song. Chopin used rubato excessively and it was his stylistic trademark. Chopin came a little later after Beethoven so he was able to incorporate many different styles of tempo...but your mention of Beethoven hit the nail on the head. I'm a choral music educator so I had to learn about composers and how time and history affected how they'd create music as time. This song hits me deep because the song came out at a time when father was unfaithful. I was a major daddy's girl and he's the one who got me interested in music, but when he was in limbo and seeing another woman he no longer wanted to give me that genuine time that we'd had and the knowledgable conversations we would have began to stop. As much as I looked up to him he was tore me apart. I was 9 when this happened but things are ok now.

My girlfriend at the time this song first came out loved it she sang it beautifully in a voice that will resonate in my mind eternally. I can hear it in complete silence Absolutely love this song it's so deeply full of passion. Demanding the evocation of emotion by anyone who truly listens . I feel that it is a masterpiece of renditioned real life experience the most people in this world who live with love in your heart can relate to personally.
I've grown up with this version of the song, and have a very big soft spot for it. I'm a stickler for the original. The mood this song gives is very different than her new version, and I prefer the way she expresses her emotions here.It's subtle, and that's what makes it beautiful.

OK, I wrote my Masters thesis on THIS work. It is in my opinion, an example of PERFECTION! She is unabashedly channeling the agony of unrequited love. Tortured and aching in its delivery, every line is protracted, as if it is being squeezed and wrung out the depths of her soul. I get the feeling that someone is SOON TO BE DEAD or wishes they were at the very least. I don't know who elicited this kind visceral response, but they need to have their ass kicked!!!

Jewel uses a simple melody with a simple accompaniment...l will probably use this in a lecture on musical textures this semester for my students.🎼💙🎹...l am still enchanted with the way she uses the cello 🎻to slowly make love to the piano as her voice floats thru the air like a butterfly 🎤
