You have a talent for language. You describe the psychology of drinking really well. I work in healthcare I notice that alcohol intake is rarely discussed in regards to overall health, but should be. Thanks for sharing you’re personal views!

Awesome job, Pete! My last doctor lab said I have beginnings of fatty liver. They said to eat less, low sugar, low sodium, diets for a year and recheck. I’ve lost 30lbs, down from 270lbs, just from diet. Haven’t incorporated more exercise yet, but plan on more to get down to 220 or little lower.
My last drink of alcohol was Dec 2022. Love my scotch, but being a good boy.
I want to be healthy for my wife and daughter. Feel much better for it already.

I was finally able to stop drinking around the age of 26. I had essentially been on a rampage since high school straining relationships with my family members, dropping out of college, losing jobs and otherwise embarrassing myself. I had just never been the sort of person who could just have one drink and call it a night, and I never understood the people who could. Every time I drank or used the goal was always to get obliterated, and if for some reason I could not do that I was not a happy camper. Needless to say I hit rock bottom eventually and found my way to the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous and managed to stop drinking, one day at a time. After that other things came to me naturally. I ate better, excersized, and created a more sustainable way of life. If anyone here believes Alcohol or drugs might be contributing to an unhealthy and unmanageable way of life for themselves, I encourage you to start there. We do recover

I've been reading some comments and realised I'm on the other end. I've lost 10-15 kilos since 2018. That may sound fine until you know that I was between 70 and 75kgs, and I'm 170cm tall. So now I float between 58 and 60 which is far too thin for my size. Plus, I've been living a pretty sedentary lifestyle, drinking four days out of 14, and haven't been eating properly.
I have just recently started focusing on making sure I eat, and at the very least, spend more time outside than I do inside staring at a computer screen or sleeping.
I'll be 60 in a few months, so I figure there's no time like the present to get fit and healthy again.
Thanks for posting this, Pete. It has given me a small push along to get my shit together. Cheers.

I've been doing intermittent fasting as well. I sometimes even go from dinner one day to dinner the next, but most days I eat a light lunch just to hold me over to dinner, then a good dinner. I've cut out all sugary foods and processed food. Nothing I eat comes out of a box or can. Only fresh whole foods. I've also been exercising too. I'm feeling better at 64 yrs old then I did when I was 40. I've lost 50 lbs, and I've been able to reverse my type 2 diabetes. Becoming an insulin dependent diabetic was the wake up call for me. I decided I was NOT willing to take insulin shots for the rest of my life, and poke my finger 3 or 4 times a day.
You're doing great Pete. On the right track for sure. Stay strong brother!

  • @meanderinoranges

Wonderful work, Pete! I just have two things:
    1. Just an explanation on alcohol and sleep. Alcohol is a downer, and your body resists the downer while it's on your system by trying to pep you up. When the alcohol finishes metabolizing, your body is still in pep mode, so you end up wide awake in the middle of the night.
    2. Your upper body and core workouts can be accomplished quite well by exactly what you're doing. So great! Buuuuuut resistance training on the lower body via squats and deadlifts will not only build those muscle groups better than any other body weight exercise, but they cause your body to make more testosterone, which is very necessary as men age. For example I noticed my leg hair getting thiner and lighter colored in my late thirties. After reincorporating squats and deadlifts (not just cycling) into my workouts, my leg hair has returned to what it was like in my 20s. And I'm now in my mid forties.
Take it or leave it, just my two cents. Thanks for making this video!

Right there with you Pete. I recently dropped about 15lbs over about a month. I had gone to the doctor and my blood pressure was quite high, like 150/100. Luckily my Dr was great and shot me straight and wanted me to get in better shape before just prescribing blood pressure meds. His suggestion was cut back on my salt a bit, eat more fresh fruits and veg, and portion control. Plus some regular exercise didn't hurt either. But seriously, once I started really paying attention to my eating and my hunger and appetite, I realized I was regularly just eating way more food (and less healthy food) than I NEED to eat. So not only did I drop my meal portions to about 1/2 of what I'd normally put on a plate, but I also cut out breakfast all together. One of the big keys for me was also eating SLOWER so that I didn't accidentally eat right until I felt FULL... because by that point you've OVER eaten. I can eat 1/2 the amount of food I used to eat, just slower now, and still feel completely satisfied with my meal.
Went back to the Dr after a month and I'd lost 15lbs and my blood pressure is now 120/70! That was it! No crazy hardcore diet or kill-yourself levels of exercise. Just being more mindful of what my body actually needs and choosing more healthy and fresh options took me from 230lbs to 215lbs and my blood pressure from Hypertension Stage 2 to NORMAL in a month. The best part is, because this wasn't some hardcore diet, I have no problem sustaining this as it's now just my new normal way of eating.
For exercise I just got a cheap stationary bike and do like 12 miles every other day or so on it in the evenings while I listen to a record or watch TH-cam. Nothing killer, just something to burns some calories, get a bit of cardio, and just keep your body feeling good.
Oh my other big thing was cutting out excessive sweets, like my previously raging Coca Cola addiction. Now I have a soda like MAYBE once a week at most compared to 1 a day prior.

I am currently on an adventure to lose about 45 pounds when I graduated high school I was about 165 LB, after getting married and then having kids I got up to 265 pounds. Right now I am down to 223 pounds And my goal is to get at least down to 175 pounds. I absolutely agree with you. One of the biggest steps for me was just to stop drinking alcohol. My wife stopped drinking and out of respect for her. I also stopped drinking and I have seen an amazing change in my life due to that. like you I never really had an issue with drinking, but it had become a little bit of a habit. I think it’s fantastic. You’re taking care of your body and your mind.

Good video Pete! I'm nearly 70 and have lost 25 lbs in the past 3 months doing basically what you have been doing. Another 20 and I'm good. I packed on mucho weight sitting on my ass all day long doing dentistry. Now I'm retired so it's ME time. The intermittent fasting is easy as I am sleeping for most of that time. Cutting out the sugar and the alcohol seems to be the biggest factor for losing the weight. I also try to walk my border collies 5-8 miles daily for exercise. Good for you for figuring this out before you get old and useless like me!!

If you haven't already, try making your scrambled eggs in the microwave. Just whip up the eggs, add or not your cheese, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc. Then cook on high for a minute and thirty seconds, take out, stir, then another minute and thirty depending on how wet or dry you like your eggs. Comes out light and souffle-like. You can also poach eggs in the microwave.

I was completely 'normal' up until about my mid 40's and then the wheels fell off the metabolism, couple of chronic health issues and I was never a gym-bro kind of guy. So with the looming threat of the diabetus and other stuff I went to a dietician who basically sorted my shit out because I was a complete chimp when it came to grazing on anything around me. So the carbs ended up about 15%, no heavily processed sugars, the rest is basically protein and fibre, that and I do make the point of going to physio with all the other decrepit, broken people each week and keep as active as I can.
The thing I found out this year is that- this is my life now. It's just going to have be like this for the rest of it or I'll die really quickly
At least you addressed it early in life and the 30's are some of the best periods of your life to live and if you can stretch that out for as long as you can, the better off you'll be

    1) In the USA, the bad food's more expensive. That's a big part of why we're all fat.
    2) Parmesan cheese; (or any type of cheese) don't buy pre-shredded. It has an anti-caking agent added that's no good and also robs flavor. Shred it yourself, even in advance.
    3) 8:20; the trick is maintaining that. Someone once told me that the key to success in a diet is finding healthy snacks. Fruit is great. It has sugar, which is not good, but if you're eating the WHOLE fruit, it's OK; not nearly like candy or cookies.
    4) Exercise. I can't even make myself do body weight exercise. For me, it has to be FUN. For solo stuff, I love cycling. Otherwise tennis or pickleball only requires one other person, (American) football, are my current faves. Get yourself a good road bike (Trek Domane in your price range) and go for it. A benefit of the bike riding is that you rarely want to knock off early. I find that once I get out there, I almost never go less than an hour.

You should check out the bioneer, he’s roughly your position in life, and he has a series on “bullet proofing” which is exercises for longevity. A lot of his content is performance focused, which I get is not your thing, but his idea of “superfunctional” is really cool. If you have a moment give him a look, I do recommend his “5 pillars of fitness” video, or like I said, his “bulletproofing” videos. Great job on the face shrink, this has gotta be one of the best health/ fitness messages I have seen in a long time 💪💪

Breakfast at mid day? But Maccas stops serving Mc Muffins at 10:30...
Thanks for this video - I struggle, but it gives me motivation to see a normal (we won't mention the knife nerdery for ths one) guy turn it around without hours at the gym or piles or expensive supplements etc.
    Cheers.

If you let your pan get real nice an hot before you put the eggs in they won’t stick. I’m definitely going to follow your breakfast routing including the fasting. I’m in my early 30’s and we had our two kids young as well. Time to take care of myself again. Thanks!

Quitting drinking is one of the best things I’ve ever done. I run with my son while he’s on his bike every day. I just have a serious cereal addiction I can’t kick.

In my opinion cutting breakfast makes the best sense dietary wise it is full of so many variable carbs especially the quicker carbs that don't give you that much energy however having that refreshing taste in the morning with a coffee or something is something I would miss personally.
But the chiselled face is worth it ;)

In simpler terms when you drink you don’t dream and you need to dream to function.
