It all started with the "Southern Strategy" and Nixon. The South had mostly voted Democrat before that. In order to win them over, Republicans appealed to the racists, conservatives, and evangelicals - all the people who are backward-looking rather than adapting to a changing world.
I grew up in New York City, which is very diverse. So I was constantly exposed to people who are different than me. I'm not afraid of differences. But if you grew up in a rural area that is 95% white christians, you would rarely run into someone different. The idea that more people who are different are moving in can be scary. So anyone that stands up and says "I will stop the change" (i.e. Trump) gets support.
