I am 18 years old, and recently got into vinyl. Went into the charity shop to look for some records and I’m not exactly sure why but this stood out to me, so i said why not and bought it. My intuition was very right.
Glad you like it. If you're interested in jazz piano, you might also like this take on the same tune, by Erroll Garner, well worth a listen: th-cam.com/video/vUmEkL3WHqY/w-d-xo.html
we all agree sir george was a jazz legend.this is great bop piano from a long time ago.what i would give to walk into a club tonight and hear this.priceless.all through my life hes been there playing great music until his passing.i still listen most weeks he left a great legacy .his music. many thanks
So true ! So sad ! We see these great and marvellous artists, only thru videos, we should like so much to see them alive, talking to them ! And the same for classical musicians !
I had the very good fortune to see George Shearing and the Quintet twice! I have just about all of his known Quintet recordings, my favorite format! I would love to see DVDs of complete George Shearing Quintet concerts or club dates!
So did my mum ...probably a bit earlier than 57 She used to go to Harlem for the jazz. Swingings Mutual with the angelic Nancy Wilson and GS is sublime
One of the most outstanding musicians of our time, the great Sir George Shearing (1919-2011),,, He surely sets an example of what human Power of Will can do !
I have an old album from my family in which he features Dakota Staton. I really like Pawn Ticket, Easy and all the others on that OLD album. Good thing we keep things in the family...there are even a few 78s that still play! Mr. Shearing was one of the greatest Pianists that ever lived. I still say that some sightless people seem to have more musical vision than others. I've always noticed. Thanks.
George Shearing was something special that's for sure. As was Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, etc... but take heart Kaysey, there are countless beautiful musicians alive and well in your day. Ya just gotta seek 'em out.
One of the most distinctive, original, and sumptuous jazz compositions of all time. Seems like all blind piano players rock and sway as if possessed when they play...like Ray Charles...and Stevie Wonder...and George Shearing...that connection of body and spirit
I remember my dad telling me that he saw George Shearing & Peggy Lee on stage, sometime in the late Fifties ; He said "..at first she kept on talking and talking to the audience, until someone got up and yelled "SING !!! " ..And when she finally began to sing, you could have heard a pin drop! :) 5*****
Mesmerised by George and Mel Torme in New Zealand circa 1990. Unbelievable concert. Brilliant Piano, Bass, Drums, George and Mel. Incredible.

Oh my gosh, I love this kind of music! Why did I have to be born in 2000!? I would do anything to see him live :(
So true ! So sad ! We see these great and marvellous artists, only thru videos, we should like so much to see them alive, talking to them ! And the same for classical musicians !
You and me both honestly. I'd die a million times just to see this man play once. It makes me cry

I saw him at Birdland, as a teenager in 1957.
Its inside me.
Ron Krate where is birdland?
Really? that's miracle moment.

This man Shearing, was a divine inspiration all through so many of our lives.
his playing and voicing from 70 years ago sounds hip now!
A so clear jazz ! I love the block chords, he uses them very often. What a good musician, and a good pianist !!
He called it locked hands..such a feel to it

That's right, this music gives me health, life, joy
@erikkihss - It was a TV appearance in London in May 1955.
Love it. Bouncy but graceful. He wrote the song too.
I always loved this tune!
It's just one of those perfect tunes.

While I dressed for school during the decade of the 50's I absorbed the music of George Shearing.
Amazing rhythm

Awesome! I'm speechless.

That is so spooky I was thinking exactly the same thing. All blind pianist do the same like they are tuned into the universes rhythm.

Another giant gone. RIP George. Thanks so much for posting this. Where is this from?
if you reduce the speed down to .75 it looks like thats the speed it was at originally
@holapeople24
O_O And he looked pretty old here already to me...
I wonder what chords he's using for the intro?
Better late then never, I would say
A7(9,13) ; Ab7(#9) ; GMaj7
// blues fill (B minor pentatonic) //
D/F# ; F°7 ; E-7 ; Eb7(#5)
Sheet music for this?
