I'm a wallpapering professional for over 40 years. It started out with small prints in the 80's to very formal patterns in the 90's to Zauber et Cie classic landscape papers in the early 2000's to lots of grasscloth in the 2010's to hand prints now. When all middle class people were stripping paper and painting their walls, the very wealthy were hanging very expensive papers-I'm talking about you, DeGourney. Now it's worked it's way down to the middle class again. As the French say :"Le jeu de le pandule'.

Lisa, I love wallpaper is making a comeback to some degree. It can make spaces in one’s home more personal, and possibly even more classy no matter the style if done right. It also can go in the wrong direction as well. Boy! this happened a lot over the decades in too many homes. This is why we NEED you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As someone one who has put up and taken down wallpaper I have some DIY tips for your followers.
    1. The surface needs to be perfectly smooth. Textured walls won’t work. Unfortunately today most walls are textured to some degree.
    2. The surface needs either a coat of paint or at least a coat of primer. This is actually for the person who needs to remove it. It is a NIGHTMARE to remove off an unprepared surface. Please do this or have it done. It is guaranteed tastes and styles will change. It might even be you who needs to remove it or pay someone to remove it.
    3. Careful attention to the pattern repeat when measuring how much one will need for the space. This could turn into one a big problem: such as not having enough then the second batch doesn’t match the first.
    4. If you have never put up wallpaper before, do yourself a huge favor and learn about #3 and other tips. Start with a small space, even better only do one wall. Start with an EASY pattern like the sea grass or stripes.
    5. It will cost more in the long run than paint even if you do it yourself. So choose carefully and intentionally.
Lisa fans, there is nothing wrong with paying a professional to do it. However, there is definitely priceless satisfaction of doing it oneself.
    Good luck “ya all!”
Lisa, I think I have mentioned it before, but growing up my parents had this BEAUTIFUL Williamsburg Chinese mural in our formal dining room. There were male and female pairs of several bird species scattered in the nature scenery. It was classy and timeless. The home was a colonial style built in 1960. The entry had a formal neutral damask which the current owners still have. Again timeless and classy and fit the home. I will say the kitchen/informal eating area and a few other rooms had wallpaper designs not so timeless. 😝 I’m sure they are long gone🤞🤞!

Your advice is spot on, and this is an outstanding primer, tutorial, and guide on how to use wallpaper. Since the pandemic, I have completely shifted my interiors from what was all white, a bit of grey, and no pattern, to a complete and considered use of color and pattern. Maximalist bathrooms -love them! I am inspired by the top UK designers Like Nicola Harding, Rita Konig, Beata Heuman and more. I love a small print wallpaper in a bedroom with an interesting and sympathetic color for the trim and ceiling. For maximalist inspiration companies like de Gournay provide inspiration. There are some wallpapers that are regularly used by top designers in the UK such as Robert Kime, Pierre Frey, Ottoline, Jean Munro like their Crackle wallpaper (and i am wallpapering the inside of my bookcases, display shelves in this classic small print.) and many more. Thanks for the excellent video, I am on board!

Grass Cloth is great for MCM homes. just organic enough on the edge of 50's tiki but sophisticated enough to handle paint colours. the green we selected for our accent wall in the living room changes depending on the light, at times it looks like the wall is lit from behind other times it's dusty and soft or vibrating green!

its definately a comeback.. we have been thinking about doing wall paper in a few rooms on the accent walls just because it gives some flair even if its meh.. cuz the areas under our cabinets our old 70s home is kinda ugly BUT its interesting.. because it has images of plants and fruits with their scientific names and its just more interesting than the plan green paint on the rest of the walls around the kitchen. which we want to look like old broch or stone work .. its really a good idea

I just love wallpaper - always have. It’s so much more finished looking than just paint (except for Venetian Plaster or lime wash, or faux finishes, which are great, too!). It helps to have someone who knows the books of wall coverings in the paint store, there’s so much to choose, and the creativity is virtually limitless - geometrics, large florals, small prints, textures (including embossed), borders, murals…

I'm curious about using a patterned wallpaper on one (or maybe two) walls in a spare bedroom, then painting the other walls with one of the colours matched from the paper (and trim with one of the other colours from the paper).
Is there a general feeling about how one chooses which wall(s) to paper? Do you do the wall that the headboard is against? Or do you paper the wall that your guests see from in bed? Do you avoid doing the wall with the window, because generally it would be less visible during the day? I know it depends on the room, really, but if people have ideas about this, I'd love to read them.

    • @LisaHoltDesign

I haven’t seen anyone talk about wallpaper application(s) options!
I’m pretty sure todays wallpaper isn’t like yesterday’s wallpaper.
I like the idea of the peel and stick, because, the reality is most people don’t live in their homes for more than 7 years, and pasted wallpaper is a great deterrent for future buyers.
So I do like the idea of the peel and stick wallpaper, which is easily removed.
Another thing is when deciding on wallpaper, your wall surface(s) texture should be smooth.
I’ve heard professionals will lay a coat of drywall mud and spread to smooth.

I tried peel and stick wallpaper on two different walls--one was over eggshell paint and the other was over flat. The paper on the eggshell wall started falling off the next day and the one on the flat wall is buckling. It's been less than a month. I think it would be falling off if the slats were not there holding it up. The time it takes to do this (over and over and buying more paper), and if I were to "prime" the wall with paper primer, I'd just as soon use that money to pay someone to just paper the wall. Some DIY stuff can become costly. Trying to save money should not (end) cost more than what paying a pro would cost.

From a real estate professional perspective, I can assure you that Wallpaper is not "back". I have been in real estate for 24 years in New York and I see hundreds of houses. Any with wallpaper are considered outdated or "in need of repair" and may cost you when you go to sell, because it is considered an expense to "fix" when buyers see it. It is too taste-specific. Doing one wall because it's fun isn't bad, and doing what *you like* is up to you. But if you plan to sell in the next few years, do not make it harder on your realtor to make you as much as possible on the sale. You may think it looks stylish but please just stick to one wall. It can kill the look of photos. If I were to take a property listing and see wallpaper, my first thought is, "oh no" and "needs work."

When someone says "small rooms", I hear small house. When you say small rooms, it's a laundry room, or office, or extra bathroom.powder room. All luxury spaces that not everyone can afford. Show me how to decorate my 8X10 bedroom. I guess I can paint the walls, ceiling, frames, woodwork all the same color, but can I use wallpaper, too?

Definitely but it needs to be thoughtful. Wallpaper works well in small spaces like powder rooms.

A lot of these look ok in photos (especially in sun-drenched rooms), but in “real world” rooms, are tiring on the eyes. Even the low contrast ones are just too busy (other than maybe grasscloth).

I hope people enjoy repapering or painting often. These bold, in you face designs -- especially the large florals and massive painted scenes-- will be dated in two years.

Like painting everything, every house, every wall gray?!

    • @whiteserpent6753
      @whiteserpent6753 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pegsol3834 i don’t disagree on that, but part of the reason that wallpaper went out of style is it was such a headache to get it off the walls. Repainting everything is a headache, but also more doable. Also of note is that many of us have textured walls.
Also to say, I remember the velvety black and gold wallpaper in my parents’ bathroom and the furry sunflower wallpaper in the main bathroom. It was… a look. So was the rubber-backed glued down paisley carpet in the kitchen, and the rubber-backed rust, blue, and gold plaid carpet in the basement. All of this was hard to remove.

    • @LisaHoltDesign
      @LisaHoltDesign  ปีที่แล้ว +3

They’ve actually been around for centuries. Peel and stick wallpapers are easily removed if you want an update an are a fun alternative to paint or other wall treatments. ☺️

Not popcorn, of course, but the texture is amazing in my opinion.
We bought a 1926 home here in Florida and the walks had been painted so many times the texture was hard to see, so I had my husband texture all the walls😁

I'm I glad I just met you! You know, it is a lie that gay people are born with style. No, we are born with drama~ I've been staring at a 6'x15 full bath/guest bath (until, as god as my witness, I shall have a guest bath to over decorate!). No, the bathroom gets much worse than that. The flipping ceiling however starts at 14' down to 8.5", which is the back where the tub/shower sits. So, yeah, it needs work. I've been fretting on the stupid ceiling! I've kicked around faux-ing the whole damn room to look like an unsavory alley, complete with telephone lines and a graffiti covered brick wall. I'm completly comfortable with the look, but it might be alarming to guests. Your sample--you called umbre I thought--idea about graduated color, made me think of using it upside down to let the dark be at the top, but that's just not It. I'm vacillating between a textured faux-paper of paint, but I am considering breaking one of your rules and paper the walls but ending at 8'-9' switching to a paint to feather off into the "oblivion" of the deepest color I am using, almost to a black. The only other idea I have would be to put up a 19th art rail with string or ribbon down to art (and the sink mirror. That I'll have to have to hang with locking brackets with faux wire to "hold" the mirror up--it's a bruser.
I'm new to your program, so I should hush and go through your back videos. I decorate my home and anyone foolish enough to ask me for help doing their own place. We are part of the new lower-middle class trying to keep up aires and look like we still had the money and buying power of days gone past. Which means we are big ol' thieves of great ideas we can't afford but want anyway, damnit.
Yours do not look like the hands of a DIYer. Your styling is nuanced and betrays a background in application art that dazzles. Design, like any art can be taught, but creativity can't. Nice to bump into you. The wallpaper I love is a run-on-demand pattern, with a "random match"--what the hell is that? I ask rhetorically. Anyway, with all the goodies one needs to hang the stuff, it was clocking in at just under a grand. Um. Ew. That was the budget, including new throw pillows, for the living room. Why am I surprised? I found out how much new appliances have gone up, "Wait. That's just the price of the refrigerator...?" A gallon of paint $50? Plus primer??
Thank you. I just received your telepathic advice. Ah, and it is wise.
Sometimes the best way to decorate can be the BBC cooking and decorating a 14th castle-type fare. And a chilled Buda Box. I will add that to the joint I have already rolled.
Nice to meet you Lisa. I will enjoy commenting from the peanut gallery.
