One thing worth noting is refurbished/modded consoles. I have 3 Sega Saturns (there's a story there) and one of them is modded/refurbished. Every single game runs better and has brighter colors on the refurbished one than the other 2 Saturns. Even games like NiGHTS and Magic Knight Rayearth have very noticeable differences in how well they look and run. Now knowing this, I really think 15-20 years a Saturn should probably get new capacitors, a new laser, and a new power supply. This is probably true for other consoles from that era.

As an arcade collector, having the real deal does not compare to emulation. Plus there are many games that were never ported and have yet to be playable in MAME, like Konami's Racing Jam series. For these reasons, collecting arcade machines and PCBs is quite special and rewarding.

I love having my physical copies of games especially the retro games. This year so far in 2022 and looking forward to the rest of the year, there’s a very lacklustre amount of decent games coming out. Since I own a lot of retro games (even trying for a complete N64 and GameCube collection), I can play the retro games I haven’t finished or even played that I wanted to. Even though I love how having a big collection looks, I know that there’s still a lot of games that I want to play.

Interesting that you hit such a personal topc for me instandly. I only found out recently that you can still redownload your Wii shop channel games so I could redownload Castlevania Rebirth for myself. I m really glad I could still do that. There is no way to purchase this game atm and with how uncaring konami is it's unlikely we will see this game available on anything in the near future.

not a collector but the most practical reason i can think of to own a physical copy is to dump it to a computer to make legal copies. in the end, physical copies will be worn out eventually, but the archived digital version never will.

I look at collecting retro in a lot of different ways.
    1. Sense of ownership... as you mentioned, owning a game you love is kinda like putting your money where your mouth is. you love it, and you loved it, and you are willing to make an investment in it... which at the very least will return to you the enjoyment and the right to play it whenever you want, and nobody can take that away from you.
    2. Preservation... To me, preservation is enjoying something as it was designed to be enjoyed. So many beloved games are getting re-released in remasters and remakes... and lets be honest, us old heads usually don't like that. I mean, if a game is really a masterpiece and you gotta change anything in it's re-release, was it really a masterpiece? Or did you just make it worse or different because you had a budget to consume or wanted to cater to people that never played it or asked for a re-release?
    3. Investment... Games can be an investment. It's not a consistent one, but it has performed historically and beats inflation more times that it doesn't. Even if they don't return the tens of thousands you hoped they would, at least its more fun to play with than a mutual fund, stocks or a commodity like gold (which you could also do, and I recommend it).

I got into game collecting nearly 20 years ago now in 2005 because I wanted my life back after a certain category 5 hurricane destroyed it. While there will always be games and merchandise ill hunt down i can finally say within the past year that I have my life back from pre-2005 and take it with me on whichever duty station I'm stationed serving in the military.

Physical copies are nice, but I find that as I get older, and space becomes more of a premium, that I've gone towards getting Everdrives and consolidating my collection. Sell off a couple high dollar games, use the funds for an everdrive for that console. Chrono Trigger and Demon's Crest bought me my SD2SNES, and thanks to my Retron 5, I was able to even make a copy of my Chrono Trigger save before I sold it.

I will always collect physical where possible. You don't and never will own anything digital. You are purchasing a license to use said software. You are basically renting said software until they decide to either delist a game from the store or just outright turn off servers to the services needed to download said games.

The Neo Geo carts? They are originals but I bought them about 5 years ago and had to be super patient on eBay to get them. The main thing is to avoid the super obscure weird games. I just use a 161-in-1 cart for those. They can cost hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars each.

So I would argue this. You are showing games that are non HD & before the internet. So having a Physical copies of those games is vastly different than owning a Physical Copy of a PS4-PS5 game. I have the ever drive which basically has almost every game on a mini SD card to access roms on the original hardware, pc roms & The Retron 5 with games on a SD card. Now not every game will work well on the roms so you need some physical copies. Also the non hd games are worth a lot more for a collector.
So here's the main problem now owning games in the HD era. You actually have to download your game on the hard drive. The fact you play online with your friends, usually means you have to get up from the couch & exchange games. Cuz at times you want to play more than 1 game. Even if you play 2-3 games at most online coop or vs. It's still a hassle getting up telling your friend ok wait let me put this in, or lets say you are just starting & you have no idea what game you are playing because you talk to each other on the party chat. Then you agree ok you'll play this said game.
With digital games I don't even have this problem. I just click out, select the game I want in seconds, then play. Also I can buy games at huge discounts not worrying about a game being sold out either. Then when I am done or beat a game instead of it being on my shelf taking up a lot of space, I delete my digital games I beat never playing them again.
You have trophies telling you what games you beat or apps that you can click for games you beat like Gameye.
