Why wasn’t this played at the much larger Vector (now Spark) Arena which had opened earlier that same year? An NWC Final between AUS & NZL would have surely sold out all 12000 seats.
Because these championships were supposed to take place in Fiji. With the coup happening it was deemed not safe so the shifted to NZ last minute. Vector was already booked out for concerts etc.
It's like full on warfare when these two teams play each other!
