It was. I saw it as a child. My parents were used to seeing "happy" disney movies like the lion king and didnt like it but I found this one grabbed my attention more. I had to struggle to understand what was really going on and in a way I felt that it expanded my world view as a child.

It was. It blew my mind as a kid. The cathedral looked even more grand in the theaters too, like you were physically walking around inside there.

My eyes teared up when watching this again. Not only is this one of my favorite Disney movies(and one of the best ones), but this is so accurate. The good stuff in this movie is really damn good. The fact the MPAA decided to rate this G shocks me. It’s just too mature. This opening shakes you to your core and prepares you for (hate to sound a little tacky) CINEMA. And that’s just the first ten seconds.

I’ll still never forget when I first saw this in theaters, and how the bells sounded echoing thru! It was also with an added fog horn outside. I grew up on Lake Superior so it was a pretty normal sound (taken down now as too many newbies complained about it being too loud) but mixed with the bells it was amazing!

I just relizied when he says "a tale of a man and the monster.", he's referring to frollo as the monster and Quasimodo as the man. Throughout the movie it's up to us to discover who is the man and the monster in this tale. Clever, it's a good way to test children's insight. Appearances can be deceiving and misleading.

Definitely the most underrated movie of the Disney Renaissance. I understand why it might not get as much attention as its contemporaries cause of its dark tone and a lot of people prefer their Disney movies light and fun, but if anything, I think that should be a reason this film should get more credit. Sure, it has some typical Disney tropes, but it also took a lot of risks and definitely stands out among the Disney animated canon. I’d also argue that it has some of the best visuals and animation of the entire Renaissance era.

Everything about those first 50 seconds is breathtaking cinematic magic. The pure beauty conveyed at the beginning with the ethereally echoing Franciscan monk chants. Then those thunderous bells joining in, swelling to a crescendo, and a perfectly timed bell chime to coincide with the iconic 'Walt Disney' text and that fabulous, olde worlde Medieval text. The overwhelming 'Hellfire' chorus as we first glimpse the sight of the gothic majesty of Notre dame, rising through those otherworldly, heavenly clouds. It creates such an incredibly atmospheric opener that perfectly expresses the themes of the film: innocent goodness, fear, evil and salvation. It calls to mind those great religious epics from the Hollywood golden age. Absolute perfection of cinematography with music, and an intro every bit as good as those from The Lion King and Beauty & The Beast.

Jordan Cole Alan Menken did receive an Oscar nomination for best comedy/musical score. He lost the award to the film score of "Emma". He also got a Golden Globe nomination for best original score but lost to "The English Patient".Nonetheless, IMO, he deserved an Oscar for his mind-blowing score in this film. It's quite rare to hear such power in film scores such as this.

No it didn't. And thus never has the same ever-lasting appeal as "The Lion King", which really was the apex of their Renaissance era and still one of their most popular films 25 years on. As for the "Hunchback", I remember liking it (a lot) but I wouldn't call it a classic. While I thought the voice-acting and animation was great along with its soundtrack (like this), I remember it having a very confused tone, never knowing what it wanted to be. One minute it was scary, next minute it was funny, next minute it was serious, next minute it was goofy etc.

I just now realized that the intro motif is also sampled in Frollo’s Hellfire( the part of “she will be mine or she will burn). I am no musician so it took me a while. I adore the sheer amount of thoughtful details that went into this film. Every time I rewatch a scene there are more things to decode, more references to discover, more layers to unravel. This is the mark of a true masterpiece!

Out of all the Disney movies intros in the 90s, The Hunchback of Notre Dame takes the prize for being the most menacing. I just noticed a symbolism that starts at 0:34, you can see the top of the cathedral sticking out from the clouds, the sky is adorned with rays of light and it almost looks like a renaissance painting... it's a representation of the Kingdom of God. What's more, the music sounds majestic and powerful during those seconds until the camera lowers and shows us what the Kingdom of Man would be like.

As a kid growing up in the '90s I can attest to how much the Renaissance flicks feeled like genuine blockbusters for kids. Adults had their Pulp Fiction and Titanic, we had The Lion King and Hunchback. Even the posters in the theater hallways looked epic af (yeah, Disney had a knack for those back in the day). I greatly appreciate Pixer of course but even in their prime they were never able to recreate that aura of epicness surronding their movies-all the same, that was probably never their intention to begin with.
Funny to recall how I used to think my parents only went with me and my sisters to keep an eye on us since they couldn't possibly enjoy those pesky kids' movies. And now, as I rewatch these movies as an adult, all I get is even more appreciation for them, for how mature they are while also accessible to even the youngest demographics.
