Spent a day there a decade ago, and could have spent more. The restaurant, the baths, the toilets, the hypocausts, the roads, the homes, the secret temple, the mosaics... And almost entirely to oneself, and reachable by an inexpensive train ride. Unforgettable! Thank you for this

I went earlier this year and had a similar experience. Rome itself is great, but it was nice to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city and explore the ruins in peace. We were there from the late morning until late afternoon and, outside of a group of school children on a field trip, we saw at most 12-15 people during our entire trip. I didn't expect to actually being able to climb several floors up through the insulae either- really cool since hardly any are still standing in the world.

@@Mode-SelektorYes, it was surreal climbing up through the "apartment building"!

This guy has a good voice and story-telling, he should start a youtube channel where he tackles niche questions about Roman history

Maybe a discord that holds events for his donor's to answer questions, give reads of his new books or ideas to get feedback etc. That'd be awesome.

Unbelievable that it can be so well preserved and especially so near a major city! I can't wait to visit.

Do it! Was there April 2022.
Just wear GOOD footwear and bring your own food/drinks and a small bag for garbage as it is pretty raw (ie not stands, kiosks, etc) inside the city itself.
      It is about a mile long east-to-west and 200-400 yards/meters "tall" north-south.

We visited Ostia for the first time last year and what an amazing site, it can be easily compared with Pompeii, although the area you can explore seem much larger. We plan to go back in the future.

Proud to say I visited Ostial last year, in the summer. I think I had 3 strokes and my dog almost died from the heat but totally worth it. I have to revisit again next year since the heat made me miss some places. Please do a video about the Etruscan Necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia. Those places were amassing to visit. People need to know about them.

I'm really liking the new channel and the podcasts. All of your stuff is good, and I like that there is now more of it. Most videos on Rome are about it's high flying politics, wars of conquest, palace intrigue etc. It's nice to get a quieter, more... contemplative look at it.

It is quite curious that the port of Ostia is much older than what it seems, since it was founded by the fourth king of Rome Ancus Marcius (known for being both a great bellicose and a lover of construction).

Wandering around Ostia Antica is a real trip. I remember walking into that temple of Mithras- it had a very creepy vibe but it was very memorable.

We enjoyed Ostia Antiqua. It was an easy train ride from Rome and a not very far walk to see the abandoned City. Getting a glimpse of the lives of Romans from not long after the turn of the millennium was very interesting. Seeing the apartments, baths, taverns, gardens took most of a morning. It's well worth a visit.

Tried to visit on the day they reduced the hours for the Autumn season (which I did not realize, my fault), was 3 minutes late. Still bummed about it. Thanks for making this video so I can see it! Ostia the town had some decent spots to enjoy the sea, at least.

At 3:01 is that a rare, well preserved, Roman electric air conditioner in that 2nd floor window?

We went in November, the weather for us (coming from northern England) was fine. the place was virtually deserted. In places you'd swear it had only been disused a couple of decades.

Today, Rome's airport is very near the Rome's 2,000 year old seaport Ostia.
Both are about 20 miles from Rome on or near the Tiber river.

Hey, I have an idea for a video. If you're ever near Illinois why don't you go to Cahokia mounds. In the year 1200 or so it was the largest city in North America North of mexico. At its peak it was larger than london. People aren't entirely sure as to why it disappeared. They built a lot of Mounds that are believed to be for religious reasons

It doesn't surprise me that there was no one visiting the place, modern Ostia has a bad reputation because of the mafia clans.

    • @dayros2023
      @dayros2023 ปีที่แล้ว +3

LoL what are you saying, modern Ostia is choke full of Romans that go there to visit the beaches in the summer, it’s absolutely packed, and safe. But anyway this is ancient Ostia that is quite far from the modern city, it is actually very close to Rome main airport. In the spring and summer there are many visitors, but the site is so big that it never feel crowded. Visit it if you can.
