  • Time has finally come... cows are out! spring cows got out slightly earlier with bulls back in and autumn cows had to wait a little longer as we are in an environmental scheme to protect ground nesting birds.

    Here in Canada the buyers prefer Angus x simmental calves, 3/4 Angus or more. Very rare to see a white bull out anywhere here or the USA

    Great looking bunch of heifers. How many cows do you have. The finest bunch of sim x cows I've seen in a long time.

    How many arces of silage to cut ?
    When roughly?

      Thank you, silage around 220 acres. First cut usually around second half of June and second cut August/ September.
      Don’t own the turbines but they are on our land 😊

      Thank you 😊
      Have always thought about it, but it would require separate herds for spring & autumn again/ would need to bull more cows because without doing sex semen no guarantee of heifer numbers and even then might not all be suitable for breeding. We would have to weigh up the option of selling less calves each year compared to not having to buy in heifers

      @@LivestockfarmHER2 WOW you and your father are fairly big farmers in Scotland or are there farms with a lot more cows and calves? That is a lot of work calving out that many cows along with 700+ ewes. Do you employ many people to make hay/silage and help with all the chores?

    • @LivestockfarmHER2
      @LivestockfarmHER2  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Would probably be on the slightly larger side of farms for around here but we’re definitely not the biggest 😊. Contractors do our silage as we can’t justify the cost of the machinery
