I remember how strange it felt seeing the Sega Logo in an intro and then Sonic running on a Nintendo device. Only ten years before this was unthinkable.

The GBA was such (and is) such a fantastic platform. It really carried the torch of classic and colourful 2D gaming in a time when the mainstream gaming world had largely moved away from that.

Sonic Advance 1 focuses on platforming more than speed.
Sonic Advance 2 focuses on speed more than platforming.
Sonic Advance 3 combines the platforming and speed, but it is normally simple to tell when to go fast and when to stay on your toes.

Jet Set Radio GBA is hugely underrated. It was made by Vicarious Visions using the same engine they used in their highly critically acclaimed Tony Hawk GBA games. It's really good and captures the spirit and feel of the original. The character animation is fantastic too, mostly because the characters are 3D models instead of sprites.

Another great video. I love the GBA and the Sega releases on it. I also loved Astro Boy, Gunstar Super Heroes and Virtua Tennis. In fact, Virtua Tennis was one of my favorite handheld tennis games, until Virtua Tennis on the PSP. I fondly remember getting the Japan release of the GBA w/Final Fight, and just being totally blown away by how great everything looked. The link cable and download play was awesome too, w/Mario Kart, F Zero, etc. That Mario Bros Deluxe game that came out on the GBA is my favorite iteration of the Mario Bros arcade game as well, and wish it'd make its way to the Switch [and playable in same console multiplayer]. Portable Guardian Heroes was awesome too! Good memories.

Sonic Advance 3 is my personal favorite GBA game. Yeah, at a glance it looks the exact same as Sonic Advance 1 and 2, but its unique partner system alone makes it stand out. Plus, the level themes in Sonic Advance 3 such as Cyber Track and Chaos Angel are just amazing, which puts it above the rest to me.

There was also a NiGHTS spinoff on the GBA! It was called NiGHTS Score Attack and the graphics were so much better than you’d expect from a handheld in that generation. You could download it on your GBA via a GameCube connection if you had certain Sega GameCube releases. In a way, it was kinda like DSiWare before DSiWare.

Capcom made a lot of great adaptations of some of their Arcade and Snes games to the Game Boy Advance.
...Sega on the other hand ...Yeah.
Which is weird because most of the games they made specifically for the GBA were pretty good.
Also in terms of 3D racers, I think EA did a better job with some of their Need For Speed games.

  • @ravagingwolverine

I really liked the GBA a lot as it was the right system at the right time for me. After SNK and Sega both had their issues, and with 3D games going in a direction that wasn't to my liking, the GBA was just what I needed. It was probably the system I was most active about buying games for when it was current. I learned of a few things I didn't know about here. I've played Astro Boy, but didn't love it as much as others. I'm going to give that one another shot, I think. I'm also going to revisit Sonic Advance. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. But my perspective may be different now. It's something to look forward to. Good to see this list of titles. A shame about certain ones like Shinobi and Altered Beast. Gunstar Super Heroes was a blast, though.

There's definitely a special place in my heart for SEGA's GBA output. The Phantasy Star Collection was actually my first experience with the series, and I remember how excited I was to get three new (to me) retro RPGs.
Also, I absolutely ADORE Gunstar Super Heroes, I honestly love it even more than the original game. And I've always wanted to set up two GameCubes with Game Boy Players on two TVs, running Shining Soul II, and link them together for big screen multiplayer

    ❗Just to say three things:
    1️⃣I really enjoyed this Video.
2️⃣If anyone back in the 1990s had said Sega would release/publish games on a Nintendo (Handheld) Console, you'd have been laughed out of the playground.
3️⃣As regards a few of the Games mentioned in this Video:
    🎮Altered Beast: GOTR/Comix Zone/SonicTH1/TROShinobi
-I STILL think that the Mega Drive versions of AB and STH1 is the best version for each series so never bothered buying them for GBA, especially after later watching TH-cam Videos when re-starting my GBA Games Collection.
-CZ was a great idea for a game but I found it too hard so didn't want to waste money.
    -TROSh is a DULL game.
    🕹Guardian/Gunstar Heroes
-Despite the acclaim they get, I never liked these games.
They both look great but were not for me.
I even bought both twice with years apart to make sure I didn't like them.
    🦔Sonic Advance 1/2/3
-I had SA1 but still prefer the first MD game. I would mostly put this game on to play the Paper-Scissors-Rock mini-game which I find to be VERY ADDICTIVE!
My favourite of the trilogy is SA3.
    🤖Astro Boy: Omega Factor
-My favourite Game on the GBA if I DON'T include ports of older Games. (Then, it would be 'Final Fight One')
    🚕Crazy Taxi: Catch A Ride
-I sold this Game last year after thinking it was an OK game but I regretted selling it and luckily re-bought another one CIB.

SEGA between 2002-2006 were still finding their feet as a Software only company. Bad decision on Outsourcing shows more than when they tried to keep their Brand relevant. Sometimes though, you have to realise that getting your name out there over having fewer games that show your Brand Quality is going to cost you more in the long run, and I think that is what they realised as of late.

Out Run, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On were pretty well done for the time and a neat little package as well, but man, that After Burner, ugh, terrible. It's certainly one of my favorite GBA games and leagues above its successors.

One thing you forgot about with Sonic Advance 3 is that you play as two characters this time and you have different abilities depending on which characters you team up, so SAdv3 does have something that makes it distinct from the first two.

Great video =) Interesting to see all the Sega titles on the system. Some great ones. Astro Boy was very good. Shame altered beast never got a proper sequel. Sega should atleast make some new installments in the old genesis style . Games like Super Shinobi series (Revenge, Shinobi 3) , Altered Beast, Ristar, Ranger X,Golden Axe would be great to see. Im glad Streets Of Rage 4 is upcoming. It probably wouldnt be that expensive to make sequels to those games with genesis style visuals, and it would fit perfectly. Double Dragon 4 did that a few years ago and it was fun. It takes alot of talent to pull that off though and Sega may not have that available anymore. Sonic Mania was awesome though, so I think they could put something nice together for those. Id also love to see sequels to arcade games like the original Space Harrier, Old style Shinobi, and maybe some of their super scaler games.

I considered it, but Sega didn't have anything directly to do with it. Treasure got the license and handled it from there. Since Treasure developed the first as well, I really don't consider it a "Sega game" in the traditional sense.

    Ah shining force and souls.
Even after Camelot left Sega, I felt the gba shining games gave us hope for Sega and Camelot to patch things up and fine tune the shining series. But that never happened.
The shining soul games would be perfect for online multiplayer on the switch.

Yeah. I played the SF games on the Genesis to death. Never tried the Soul games, though. I know he doesn't have a high regard for them, but I think I'm going to give Soul 2 a try. It looks right up my alley for this vintage gaming.

  • @kicapanmanis1060

Yeah....Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 all play very differently so I don’t know what you’re talking about. And while I had issues with 3, the partner mechanic was a good concept. Like a much more evolved Sonic and Tails from the Megadrive games. I also had zero Issues with them being annual releases, just meant more Sonic games to play back in those days (alongside Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Zero, two annual GBA franchises I also adored). It’s not like a 50 hour adventure each or anything so each entry still feels good.
They also represented different feels. Advance 2 felt like the speedy stages of Adventure 2 (and brings the Homing Attack to 2D Sonic for the first time as well) while Advance 3 was clearly taking after Heroes.

  • @Lightblue2222

Sega Arcade Gallery let me down. Sure they look and sound great, even play smooth. But each game is missing key elements to give it challenge. For instance, Super Hang On you can hold turbo basically forever without sliding, makes for a nice relaxing cruise but lacks intensity and challenge. I can point out simular issues with the others. They are just far too easy to compare to the real quarter munchers or any other port of those games for that matter. It's the only time Challenge was left out. Guess I could call them beginner versions.. I'm sure they could have done better, especially if GBA is as powerfull as 32X.

Great video! I love Sonic Advance1, but Sonic Advance 2 is my least favorite 2D Sonic. Annoying boss fights where you need to run, and the high-speed gameplay constantly gets interrupted by unfair obstacles. You should have mentioned the odd overworld hub thing in SA3 though.

This GBA era was full of Hit and Misses. While the portable features a lot of GEMS it also have lot of the crapware that nowadays floods cellphone app stores and also Nintendo Switch Eshop.
I also got dissapointed by the new version of classics, the same happened on the Ps2, I remember a that awful Project Altered Beast, Kunoichi ripping off the Decent Newer Shinibi and a poor version of Golden Axe in Sega Ages 2500 and others (at least they had an amazing port of Dynamite Deka).
    Good reviews as usual.
