Angela, when my kids were young we would each grab a young chicken (easier to hold) and head to the garden where we would hold the chicken and aim it towards the Japanese Beetles and let them have at it. It was a much faster process than hand picking them off the plant. We had fun and the chickens loved it. Lots of laughs with what we called our "Flinstone pest control." LOL

    • @ParisienneFarmgirl
      @ParisienneFarmgirl  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've NEVER been able to get my chickens to eat them. How strange! That for SURE would be much faster.

      @@ParisienneFarmgirl You are not alone.
Japanese Beetles are famous for their atrocious taste, making getting ANYTHING, including chickens, to eat them nearly impossible.
How Holly was successful is beyond me.
Hmm. Maybe a light spray of Hollandaise Sauce?

If I lived closer, I'd take the black eyed Susans and sunflowers for you. I love looking at my rose garden. My grandmother taught me how to take care of them. Every summer they remind me of her.

I'll trade you these grasshoppers, the whole plague of them, all over 500 varieties of them, for your Japanese beetles any day! Grasshoppers, temps in the triple digits, and a drought = a garden that is brown and dying or dormant and it's only July!! I love Texas, and I wouldn't trade these conditions for longer winters, but it can be so frustrating! Still, your garden is enviably, breathtakingly, beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!!

I resemble that. Grasshoppers, triple digit heat, high desert with bad drought. Even tulle isn't stopping the bugs.

Here in Italy (at least in my region) people have yellow and blue flower together in a distinctive spot this year. Walking in my neighborhood and seeing these make me think of Ukrainians. I saw wreaths with the 2 colors on doors and gates. Maybe transplanting your yellow flowers and adding blue would be a good thing. They have lost everything for what? We need to have them in our thoughts.

I don’t like yellow in my decor or my clothing, but I will always have yellow roses and yellow flowers among my flowers. I always remember my sister-in-law that we lost to leukemia. They were her favorites roses and her favorite color. I know she would love them.

I live in western Iowa and have the Japanese beetles, especially on my pink Drift roses. They don’t seem to bother my red or lavender roses. Door County is so pretty, several years ago our daughter treated us to a stay at a pretty Queen Ann B & B in Sturgeon Bay. I loved all the little shops and wineries.

Can I suggest that when dead heading your roses you drop the clippings into a bucket and dispose of them. Dropping them on the floor is not good and can encourage disease. Just a suggestion xx love from the UK

I've had Rudbeckia show up unannounded completely out of nowhere too - and yes, we have the birds to thank for that. My volunteers were dug up & gifted to a friend. And your boxwood looks very much like it may be a 'Green Velvet' or a version thereof. Zone 4 hardy, they also are my favorite in leaf. I have two helping the hops filled arbor announce the entrance to my raised vegetable/bramble beds. And your love of English Roses is appreciated here. My favorite by far with their peony-like blooms, great fragrance, & wonderful colors. Yours look spectacular.
Again, thank you for these garden tours. The parterre you've created & continue to improve upon is enormously impressive.

I bought the Winchester Cathedral standard Roses in pots to embellish both sides of a garden bench.
I have all colors of flowers in my gardens including yellow. Love the Goldenrod ( now getting some color) .
Very easily to dry and in that way remains beautiful all winter!! Smelling delicious! A sunny glow in your home in darker days. Maybe you can make a yellow flower corner? Flowery regards from the Netherlands!

I really enjoy your potager videos, Angela. Thank you for sharing them. I remember when you were working on building the pond. You have accomplished so much and your garden has matured so elegantly. Thank you for showing your roses and their names. The Scepter d'Isle is very similar in petal and hue to some peonies I have. I would love to have that in a rose. Deer eat our rose buds almost as fast as they appear. Do you have trouble with deer eating some of your flowers and plants? I have found that they do not prefer purple/blue flowers, so I have a lot of lavender, catmint, and Russian sage. They also do not eat peonies! James Galway reminds me of a camellia. I really like the color and petals of Thomas A Becker. I thought I saw vegetables in the mix. I look forward to the vegetable garden tour. :)

You have a lovely garden. I’ve watched since you moved in and it is incredible how much work you’ve all done! Congratulations! Here’s a tip I learned from Linda Vater gardener: put a few old baskets throughout your garden and grab one when you dead head to through spent flowers and leaves in, then empty it into your compost bin! Keeps the garden tidy and no need to go around afterwards to pick them all up!

As the the beetles, I bring a little jug with water in it and I remove the bugs, either with a gloved hand or by simply putting the jug under the pest and then tap plant gently which makes the bug fall into the jug....I cover it and leave it in the garden until the next time I pass by and need to do pest control again! Then in a few days, I put them in the city compost bin.
