The can of rancid death? Use a modern can opener and remove the bottom, remove the contents, clean the inside, solder the bottom back on. The can if left as is, will pop from pressure spewing it's contents destroying everything.

Great review, when you look at it, isn't this one of the more practical survival kits out there, especially for its age! A compass you can read without glasses, exceptional. A better knife option and a space blanket and your good in a pinch. Cheers Stu NZ

I seem to remember these advertised for in P&S sales catalogs(think military surplus and oudoors) of the early to mid 70's; perhaps in the Ruvel surplus catalog out of Chicago as well.
I also thought Chuckwagon Foods was absorbed into Mountain House or Oregon Freeze Dried. May have also made an appearance in Gokey's outdoors catalogs of the same era.
    Nice video.

This 1957 model bought one in 1971 out of the Gander Mtn. catalog. I think it was about $4. I'm to lazy to go in the basement and check the catalog. Yes I still have the catalog but not the kit. Nice review.

very cool that y'all got ahold of such a rare kit, and a good-looking specimen at that. shame that you couldn't really do much with it, but I totally get your reasoning for leaving it intact. pemmican's spoiled, so no reason to break it just to smell and taste it, and the gum and chocolate are the same you as can get from hundreds of other cheaper and easier to find kits, which I'm sure you've had before anyway. at least y'all got the chance to contribute to the world's knowledge of it though!

neat video - but ''pemmi _sin_ " ??
I've eaten it all my life and that's the first time I've ever heard it pronounced that way. It comes from the Cree word ᐱᒦᐦᑳᓐ (pimîhkân) according to wiki. But if people pronounce it differently, so be it.

That'd be cool if everybody keeps passing it along. Maybe somebody wants to pay you $200 get your money back for future MREs and then somebody else could make a video and if they want to pass out along or keep it. Little steep for me but good idea and respect your ideal of not harming the antique LOL. Sure it'd be cool too see what it looks like but it is rare and it is hard to not to open things up LOL

That's NOT pemican! According to the ingredients list there IS no beef, or any OTHER kind of meat in that "pemican". That's nothing but a canned fruit and nut bar of some kind. Without meat it ISN'T pemican.

@@seankane8628 you've HAD one? Or are you just guessing? And do you mean minceMEAT or just mince? Those two terms are frequently USED interchangeably, but they are actually 2 different dishes. Mince meat actually has meat in it, whereas mince doesn't.

Worst k-ration ever. Pemmican is supposed to be equal parts of pounded/powdered lean meat and rendered tallow, sometimes with powdered dried fruit mixed in. Vegitarian "pemmican" is closer to modern, meatless "minced meat".
