- A playthrough of SNK's 1993 wrestling game for the Neo Geo AES, 3 Count Bout (ファイヤースープレックス/Fire Suplex in Japan).
Played through as Terry Rogers on the normal difficulty level.
3 Count Bout is the only proper wrestling game that was released on the Neo Geo (unless you really stretch how you'd define the genre in order to include King of the Monsters), and it was easily one if the more impressive wrestling titles when it was released. Consuming a massive 106 megabits of memory, 3 Count Bout drew attention with its enormous character sprites, wide range of moves, violence, and generally gritty, hard-edged look - Saturday Night Slam Masters this is not. It feels far closer to Street Smart and Wrestle War (both arcade games with Sega Genesis ports) than it does any of the WWF games that were around at the time.
It's also one of the few Neo Geo titles that I don't recall ever seeing on any non-SNK platforms, either ported or emulated.
You get your choice of one of ten characters (eight are unique, while the other two are slightly altered clones), with many of them bearing more a slight resemblance to real wrestlers - Terry Jones (Hulk "Terry" Hogan) and The Great Muta (Red Dragon) being the most obvious picks. They each have their own unique strikes, grapples, and balances of speed and power, and all feel quite different from one another to play.
The focus of the matches tends to be the grappling system. When you or your opponent initiates a grapple, you have to bash buttons to get your power bar as high as possible. If you filled it more than,your opponent, you then input a move command using a combination of joystick directions and the A or B button, but even if you win the grapple, you have to be careful about the move you pick. If your enemy hasn't been sufficiently weakened, they'll easily reverse your more powerful moves. It's pretty damned frantic.
You have to fight your way through ten matches to become the ultimate champion, and there is some variety between these. Most take place in the traditional ring setting, but you also will fight in no-holds-barred events in a parking lot and a warehouse (where you can use weapons, destroy property, or even pick up bystanders to use as weapons!), and in deathmatches wherein you fight surrounded by electrified ropes. It's all pretty intense.
And it plays quite well, overall, but it has been criticized over the years for being too difficult. I'd have to agree there - the systems are simple and easy to work with, but the CPU is relentless, even when set to easy. The grappling system is the biggest victim of that - unless you're very careful in how you set yourself up, youll get power bombed through the floor endlessly. I played this a lot on my Neo Geo CD way back, and it took a very long time to become any good at it. I still wouldn't say I'm good at it - the CPU wipes the floor with me on hard - but I made sure that I was at least well-practiced enough to go through normal without losing a fight.
I didn't mind the difficulty too much once I got used to it, but what really made all the practice enjoyable was the presentation. The characters look great, even if their massive sizes do highlight the fairly limited animation, and they each have all sorts of cool little incidental movements that make them feel more alive than they do in, say, WWF Royal Rumble. The backgrounds also look great, with lots of detail put into the crowds, the cameraman, and the rings themselves. The sound is as big and as in your face as the visuals, with a lot of catchy sample-laden tunes and voice work at play. The fully voiced announcer always impressed me too, especially during the fight introductions.
3 Count Bout certainly won't be everyone's cuppa, but for those of you that aren't afraid of a challenge and love SNK's classic style, this is a very good time.

Wasted opportunity to not have Raiden/Big Bear as a guest from Fatal Fury. Capcom's Saturday Night Slam Masters brought in Mike Haggar from Final Fight. That was a great idea.

I really liked the style of this game. Sure it doesn't have the technical advantages that the wwe2K games have, but it looks like it's fun! Each wrestler has a unique style and "gimmick" and that's exactly what wrestlers and wrestling IS! So overall I have to admit this is a really great wrestling/fighting/beat em' up game! It really captures the essence of pro wrestling! See you don't HAVE to HAVE a HUGE license for a wrestling game to be playable, just a decent amount of glamor and glitz, some amazing moves, crazy flips and flops, and overall knowledge of wrestling, and this has it! A decent game that I'd get if I had a NeoGeo.
Soo wanted to love this game, but the grapples are literally impossible to win after the third round and you have to cheese the game to win.
But shame there never was a sequel (though some people count that Neo Geo Pocket wrestling game as the sequel)
Only way to win grapples in later matches is to land enough strikes first, but even then it's tough towards the end.
If this had Technos style controls it would be incredible.

I thought that SNK's 3 Count Bout was unfairly panned when it came out - at least I've always had a good time with it! Just be warned - it's far from easy!
I honestly love this game and wish SNK would've made a possibly easier sequel. If you can beat Slam Masters, you can get through this game, though that game is about as tough as this, IMHO.
Now I know where the action finger button came from. Damn pirates taking all the sprites to make their knock-off games. I watched Projared video about a Wii knock-off console.
This SNK pro wrestling game will be re-released on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One as part of ACA Neo-Geo series.

Wow! I love this game on my aes. So much nostalgia but I can never finish it. Great skills! I also like it's 2 player tag team mode.
Aww, yeah, more NG stuff. The truck stop outside my town had one, and they actually rotated the games, so me and my best friend would go there on weekends and spend hours there eating the greasy cheeseburgers and playing the Geo. This one I didn't get to play until sometime later, but it was still a blast, especially 2 player, since I'd usually win.

After seeing the link NC, I had to come right over to see your 3 Count Bout video. Marvelous as usual bro. Such a fantastic game and graphically impressive to really show us the power of the Neo-Geo and the 100th Mega Shock that SNK had to offer at the time.
Tough as rubber this gem was, I never could go past The Red Dragon. However, a fellow Neo-Geo player explain to me that you will never be able to progress if you start grappling all the time, you had to weaken the CPU with high risk maneuvers, colliding with them, or using weapons to cause damage...It work soon after. 8^)

Looking back on this game, Saturday Night Slam Masters had this beat on the Roster. 4 of the playable characters in this game are just palette swaps with the exact same moves. Seems kind of lazy in hindsight.
I mean, didn't SNSM have Hagger from Final Fight in it? Everyone is lazy to some extent.
@@BedroomBeethovens Bringing in a character from another franchise and re-designing him, updating his movesets and animations isn't lazy to any degree; in fact it shows dedication.
Swapping the rgb values 4 times and passing them off as "individual" characters is the epitome of lazy.

I didn't have a NeoGeo system back then. They were a tad bit too pricey for me and my minimum wage job...lol. Actually not minimum wage but certainly not a huge dollar per hour amount. I stuck with the Nintendo Systems, the Sega Systems, the TurboGraphx-16, etc. Those were just fine for my cheap butt.....lol! However this was one game I was and am curious about! Thanks for sharing this with us! Great video as always!

The mistake people make with this game is treating it like a wrestling game. It isnt one. It is a wrestling themed brawler. Punching and kicking to wear opponent down are what you need to do. Occasional flying drop kick here and there. Only grapple with A in the beginning, towards the initiate grapples with A but end with B and presssing up/down/left/right etc and bigger moves that usually end the fight will be performed.
I dont know if there are finishers, some guys refuse to be grappled until the absolute very end. This is more of a fighting game than it is a wresstling game. Streets of Rage if it was in a ring.

Uno de los mejores juegos de luchas hubiera estado excelente que le aplicaras el german suplex a algún adversario por lo regular al gandhara o al red Dragon los demás ya es más difícil aplicarselos o la francksteiner con esos dos movimientos ya la tenías ganada ya que si se levantaban de ellos inmediatamente los podías cubrir otro que tenía un movimiento espectacular era el red Dragon que hacía una tabla marina todos los personajes tenían movimientos de rendición ocultos que eran fatales solo que eran más difíciles de aplicar logré terminarlo con la gran mayoría incluso en parejas con un amigo de la infancia que nos coordinamos muy bien saludos

No way to win during grapple time
You have to beat on your opponent before grappling. The more you can hit them, the more the grapple meter will be pushed in your favor.

覚えている限りでは、このゲームと同じ会社の他ゲームとの関わりとして、餓狼伝説のライデンと関わりのあるキャラがいた。はるか未来の時代の設定の風雲シリーズでも「SWF」は存在している。KOFの椎拳崇が、ザ・レッドドラゴンのファン、という設定。…このくらいでしょうか？
もっとこのゲームのキャラや設定が日の目を見るといいな、と思います。
