  • A playthrough of SNK's 1992 versus-fighting game for the Neo Geo AES, Art of Fighting.
Played through the story mode on the normal difficulty level as Ryo.
Art of Fighting might not be regarded as one of SNK's best fighters ever, but it certainly was an important one early on. As their second fighting game franchise, preceded only by Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting had a fair few unique innovations, and it pioneered a number of concepts that would go on to influence the genre throughout the 90s.
The game plays like a standard SF2-era 2D fighter with buttons assigned to punch, kick, and throw. The D button introduced taunts, which would allow you to drain your opponent's "spirit," represented by the bar beneath the fighter's health. This bar drives special moves - if it is drained, you can't perform anything but basic moves unless you hold an attack button to generate more, though this leaves you wide open to attack. Art of Fighting was also the first fighting game to have decisive, "super" special moves driven by a power gauge - something that would see almost universal adoption in 2D fighters in the years following, especially once Capcom popularized the mechanic with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
The game also pioneered the famous "zoom" effect, used more famously by Samurai Shodown. Leveraging the Neo Geo's sprite-scaling power, the screen zooms in and out as the distance shifts between the characters, making for a much more dramatic spectacle.
Innovations aside, Art of Fighting is still a solid 2D fighter. The controls aren't as sharp as they could be, and the single-player mode is let down a bit by limited choice of characters (a hold-over from the first Fatal Fury), but it still makes for an entertaining, albeit simplistic, arcade experience that still manages to impress with its huge sprites, cutscenes, and its amusingly melodramatic and obvious cliffhanger thanks to wonky translation work.
Taken on its merits as a 26 year old arcade fighter, Art of Fighting is still worth goofing around with, and is fun to play just to see what influence it still holds over today's games.

As a 12 year old boy in 93, I played this in the bar at my local golf club. I'd cycle over, park my bike, enter the smoke filled bar and have the time of my life! I'm actually writing it from the location of the game, 30 years later, watching this video. The bar has changed, smoking is no longer allowed inside, but the memories of the good old days remain.

Fun fact: 2nd hand smoke was good for your health back in those days. We were a tougher breed.

It might not have ever been held in the same regard as Street Fighter II or King of Fighters, but Art of Fighting made a lot of important contributions to the fighting genre, and is still a fun little time waster all these years later.

… is our what? You can't do that to me, game!
Seriously this was really fun to watch. The zooming, the more technical moves, the supers. It's clearly different enough from Street Fighter to stand on its own. I don't remember ever seeing this in the arcades. I always saw Samurai Shodown, though. I thought that game was pretty cool.

Great upload! The Neo Geo was always a difficult platform to sell to the western world. (For many, many reasons!) But it (and its variants) was a great 2D system. And that music... wow!

it's weird that the AES version is easier than the super nes version but the aes version of AOF2 is near impossible on default difficulty while the super famicom version is easier. Like... make up your minds!

That's pretty cool how the camera zooms in and out accordingly depending on how close or far away the combatants are. All in all, it's not the best story in the world, but ignoring that, who plays fighting games for the plot anyway? A solid fighter, for sure.

Both AOF 1 and 2 are beautifully designed from a visual standpoint, but in my humble opinion, suck terribly in the program development department. I am not nearly as apologetic as others in this regard. I hate this game for being such a cheap chore to play through. The mechanics are painfully under developed/not well executed.
I definitely appreciate the visual direction though. Zooming in an out at random points. The bruising and voice over work, are all great contributions. If only the game played as tight as Capcom's Street Fighter II. Then this game would be on my top list of enjoyable fighters, because it really does look great. Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can only throw two or three before you run out of energy. Are you sure this is the game you're thinking of? The AI is brutal, it doesn't get caught in traps easily.
