I was glad to find this tutorial because the written instructions were not clear. It seems that the edges could be finished. It would give it more weight at the bottom.
Thank you so much for this!! I had to put this project away for a bit because I got so frustrated (I find videos much easier to understand than the pattern instructions). Love this!!
If doing the hood version, note there are two pieces that get sewn together. First pice is the hood with the back pieces and the two front pieces. That is the ‘back’. Then the hoot facing or the inside of the hood and the half moon piece that would have a label and loop on it. This is attached to the lapels or front facings. Then these two pieces are connected at the shoulders. The hoods are not sewn together until the end. It was confusing for me too. I hope that helps.
Yes! What do you have questions about? The tricky thing about this pattern is that it goes against common rules for sewing. For this cape you will be sewing wrong side to wrong side for most pieces. I believe for the hood you will be sewing the two pieces right side together, and then attaching it to the outside of the collar, and sew along the shoulders.
@@ElinEstelle When I attach the hood it seems like there is a left over piece which I guess is supposed to form the lapel. And then stitch in the ditch with that piece? Thank you so much for replying by the way.
@@karins7609 It is hard to know for sure without seeing it but I do believe that there is a facing piece for the hood. I always try to pin/ start sewing the garment even if I'm not sure... that way I can really see it and hopefully it be easier to understand. My seam ripper is my best friend!
@@ElinEstelle thanks, I did a lot of clipping/pinning and trying. I wouldn’t recommend the hood with heavier fabric because between the interfacing lapel and the double hood, it gets quite heavy. But just need to do the edge finish now. Yay!
You can certainly add a lining with a little bit of pattern making. By tracing the front and back pattern pieces you can match up and trace the front and back neckline facing pieces onto this pattern and cut this away. Then cut out your lining fabric and sew the edges to the facing and all the way around the hem with right sides together. Or you can simply cut out the lining using the front and back pattern pieces and sew the edges together with your wool with right sides together along the hem. Then flip it right side out and sew it like it is one piece. I hope this helps!
Can I get your opinion on sizing. I'm usually a size small. If info by my measurements for pattern I would make a Medium. But, looking at the xs (says 6-8) that seems more like the size I would need. It's a loose fitting poncho. Any advise?
Katherine Lewis I would advise to cut out the bigger size if you’re unsure. It will be easier to cut it down since it has raw edges, but there won’t be a way to add fabric. I’ve found McCalls measurements and sizing to be very accurate for myself so I trust them!
I'm so glad I found your video. I love this pattern. Question, do you think the luxe premium fleece @ joanns would be too thick? What fabric would you recommend.
Thank you! I am glad you have found me. I don't have personal experience with their luxe fleece. But according to the JoAnn website it is their heaviest weight fleece. I would consider this as well as the fact that there is no lining, no closures, and no side seams, so I think the cape can be adjusted enough as you're wearing it to be comfortable.
@@ElinEstelle Thank you! One more question -- I know the pattern does not recommend this but do you think I can make this with a denim?? I realize I need to do some type of stitching around all edges to prevent fraying.
@@leighkottwitz7872 As long as it is a lighter-weight denim and is not super thick and stiff I think that would be a fun idea! I would do the same edge stitching and actually fray the edges up to the edge stitch if it were me. I think that would be cute!
May I ask what type useable interfacing you used ? I purchased the Luxe fleece to make this pattern. Since it's a thicker fabric would you recommend I still use the interfacing?
Katherine Lewis yes I would recommend to use interfacing, I’ve always found that using interfacing helps make your sewing look cleaner and more professional. In this case I used a medium-weight interfacing to give the neckline a little more shape and structure. I would recommend finding an interfacing that is similar in weight to your fabric
I am a novice at sewing and the instructions are a nightmare to follow... I dont understand your explanation on how to make the collar... I'm all mixed up now!!! Please can you slow down???
Hi Marie, I know what you mean! This is not a normal collar. My best advice is to watch the video as you are sewing. You should keep in mind that there are raw edges for the collar - the wrong sides (with the interfacing) will be sewn together. However, the cape will be sewn with right sides together so the raw edges won’t be showing at the shoulder seam. And make sure to transfer the markings and notches, these will help you out immensely when putting the collar together.

Thank you! I've been looking at the enclosed pattern instructions and find them lacking, this is super helpful!

I agree, they really need to do better with their instructions that’s added. It’s not helpful at all
Thanks for the video. You make it look so easy! I’m trying to make the view with the hoodie but it’s very confusing. Thanks again!

So helpful! I was going to get boiled wool for this and this video is giving me ideas for how much drape and the weight I’d like. Thank you!

Holy cow, thank you so much for this video! The instructions were not exactly clear, but your video got me through making this garment!

The usual pattern instructions tend to make me hesitant and I end up with a half done project stuffed away 🤪😞 This is wonderful thank you!! 🧡👍🇨🇦

Has anyone contacted McCall's to let them know that the instructions aren't clear?
I tried to follow the link you gave for the fabric, but it's going to the general website. Can you tell us what the fabric was called, please?

Katherine Lewis I cut out a size large
Thank you! How do you keep the interfacing from showing where the edge stitching is done?
Press on and trim the interfacing edges all the way around before you sew the edge stitching
