    Somebody translated the Kikan S magazine interview of the BSD author, Kafka Asagiri, that was asked about his target audience for BSD.
    Asagiri replied with, “This story [Bungo Stray Dogs] is not for the people who are good at living. In this world, there exist people who are so good at living that they do not need a ‘story’ at all. They are the ones who think that stories are, after all, just a pastime for your hobbies, that they are not necessary for life, and therefore it is a waste to spend money on such things. I did not assume such people to be my readers from the beginning. I cut them off. On the other hand, there are certainly people who need stories like oxygen still. I always hope the Bungo Stray Dogs will become the oxygen for such people. They are the ‘lost ones’ that Dazai talked about.”
    no wonder there’s a lot of reason-for-living themes 🥲

      Wow… that hit deeeep, and it’s scarily accurate to the truth. Damn thank you for this genuinely because wow, usually I’ll think of stuff like this or hear it but it’s usually just speculation and the confirmation is rare from the author, but hearing this just wow again, such great art with an even greater insight.

      omg! thanks for pinning my comment-- err.. that sounded weird.... but you know what i mean 🙈
      i love how every character had their own story to tell, regardless if they had a proper backstory or not, there's still some sense to them-- maybe not much to Ace, Pushin and that unnamed blonde guy from season 1 Lmao

    The storytelling is so well written everything comes in full circle at some point. It’s really good! The show is full of twists and turns that make you think you know what’s gonna happen but you actually don’t & will make you crave for the answers.

    bsd is honestly one of the best animes and shows i've watched. the characters are all so complex and the show has so many layers and deeper meanings. there's so much detail even in side characters and very minor characters. the parallels between dazai and mori are one of the details i love. it really shows how much affect and influence mori had on him, even in his mannerisms. there's also parallel between oda and dazai that i just love. the abuse cycle as well with mori, dazai, aku and kyouka. and the opposite cycle with oda, dazai, atsushi and kyouka. the fact chuuya isn't even shown that much in the anime and is a side character yet he has this whole deep backstory and light novel. the way that this show makes you love characters, even ones who only appear in a single episode such as karma is amazing writing. and with how complex the characters are, dazai alone is such a complex character. bsd has genuinely some of the best writing i've seen. it honestly breaks my heart with how underrated this anime is because it is seriously so amazing

    • @AntiKash
      @AntiKash  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly fam, it’s genuinely so complex and unique of an anime but still so good. I don’t understand how it’s not spoken about or in the least even mentioned when talking about great anime in the general community. One thing for sure tho is that the bsd community is one of the best out there!

    • @Phillia_crochet

      One reason it's so complex is because the characters are based on real life authors. Real life people is always more complex and intricate than meet the eyes.
      One reason for being underrated is because of the demographic of this series. It's seinen, geared towards young adults or older men (17+). Younger teens are yet capable of understanding/ appreciate such complexity or ready for such dark/ deep themes represented. I mean, a 13 years old can enjoy Naruto for nothing but the fight scenes, but how many would enjoy complex character dynamics, let alone reading classic novels and poetry?
      Both the demographics and literary themes would already narrow down the scope of potential audience.
      As an Asian, this show many inspire, intrigue or at least make Literature more fun and interesting. (Especially for students doing their school work like finding out more about an author and reading their works out of curiosity or for an assignment. Or designing an author OC for this show would require researching authors and Literary figures which are likely in some school subjects. Some BSD fans in my country posted their OC ideas online of national authors who aren't well known worldwide but whose works are obligated at school.)
      Not just anyone, especially young people, would enjoy that if they don't already have a nerdy sides.
      For instance, although I'm not as nerdy about Literature as my one of my upperclassmans and high school besties, but got interested just because my head teacher in junior high taught Literature in such a novel and captivating ways compared to others. I found out about BSD after reading another Literature - themed discussing dark sides of life series called Bungaku Shoujo (Literature Girl, a LN series with each volume based on a famous novel.)

      @@Phillia_crochet i’ll be honest, i hate reading books and always have. it’s never been a hobby of mine, i’ve only ever been able to really get into a book if i actually really like it(which has been a few.) but bungo stray dogs really introduced me to literature and helped me like reading more. i bought the book no longer human awhile back and absolutely loved it. i probably would have never read it if it wasn’t for bsd and i’m very thankful that i found it. i also bought crime and punishment a few months ago and am currently reading it. it’s honestly amazing how this show really introduces people to old literature and makes it more fun since a lot of fans want to know more about the characters through the actual authors books

    Ranpo might be the most well written, interesting character I've ever seen. Especially when you take into account how his insecurities of the past reflect on him in the present, pretending he doesn't know he's ungifted and pushing people away because he's afraid of how the ada will react if they find out he does know and has been an arrogant asshole for basically no reason. He can't turn back after 12 years so he keeps up the charade. This could easily be annoying and badly written, but the way bsd presents these insecurities and character traits are so well done. Personally I think the subtlety does it, the small moments were ranpo acknowledges that he knows only to backtrack quickly. It's so well done.

    • @AntiKash
      @AntiKash  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly there’s so much depth to a character who first showed up as a literal arrogant asshole at first like u said, yet ended up so complex and made u care for the character that much more. And ranpo is just one of the many amazing examples

    BSD is bones like least favorite child, they do some of the animations poorly and they skipped over sooooo much stuff in season 4, not just details but huge chunks that will greatly impact the way anime onlys percieve some of the characters. It made a lot of people mad, rightfully so, we have waited so long for another season but Bones rushed it and skimmed over so much. Now there will be a season 5 and people r worried that theyll water down a lot of the scenes.

      @@AntiKashtbh as an example from 4th season i’d give some cut out parts of Sigma’s backstory, Tachihara’s inner struggles between PM and Hunting Dogs, also Fyodor and Dazai’s language they made up on spot to communicate in prison (it being cut out in the anime kinda creates a plot hole - how do they communicate when guards look after them all the time?). so it’s quite valid when people say that a bunch of necessary scenes were removed

    I remember watching BSD when I was around 10 years old when it only had its first two seasons or so. In all honesty, I purely watched it for the sake of comedy relief and action battles. But re-watching it now, I have begun to appreciate just how well-thought out the characters and storyline are. The characters are injected with such unique backstories it completely changes the way we view them. And it's insane that one person meticulously weaved such an intricate plot that still continues to take us on the edge of our seat while hitting some of the deeper themes and insights on the world around us. It will probably still take me a long time to unpack the whole thing, but that's in the fun of it anyway. I really do think more people should watch it too

    There is a lot more than just he anime. There are currently 8 LNs and their manga adaptation. Some part of the LNs have been adapted into the anime but written materials always have more in store than what is shown on screen. There are fan audio readings of the LN with voice impersonation in English. The readings is from the official hard copies translations so some terms may differ from the fan translation. The manga also includes short written stories and much more details and spin offs than the anime adaptation.

      @@AntiKash I just rewatch this video and would like to clarify that BSD is in the Seinen demographic, which targets young adults and older males. That probably makes the scope of target audiences narrower than common Shounen. The themes and complexity aren't appealing to everyone, let alone younger teens that Shounen targets. Even if someone in their younger teen years could like this show, I don't think it's a good idea to let them see it so early on
      (I mean, I read Naruto at 12 although it's recommended for 13 years or older but it was just a year earlier. However, if it's like 3 years or more earlier, it would likely leave something terrible in the long run.
      I got into BSD at the end of my teen years which is the target age group after reading another Literature-inspired Light Novel series called Bungaku Shoujo (Literature Girl) which discusses rather dark themes like mental health and PTSD so BSD isn't shocking nor too dark for me (who can't stand horror and ghost movies/stories but somehow was so interested in Rumiko Takahashi's work.)

    • @AntiKash
      @AntiKash  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Phillia_crochet yea I learned much after this video about seinen Vs shounen and I could see why the first draws a smaller audience, since most people especially the younger fans just want a naruto like shounen and can’t really handle the complex themes in bsd, still definitely under appreciated and hopefully more can come to appreciate this work one day!

    Complex characters and some of the best writing in anime?... Bro, what? 😅
    It's a fun shonen. Like, VERY much a shonen. And it VERY much follows typical structures to a tee. And the MC's plot armor is so thick it can stop bullets.
    What's with this show and people wanting to pretend it's deeper than it is? It's okay to just enjoy dumb fun stories, man.

      Of course it’s okay to enjoy fun dumb stories, it always has been. But bungo stray dogs is not just a “fun shonen”. The symbolic meaning of each characters trait, ranpo - acts egotistical because he’s actually insecure about his lack of powers. Dazai - playfully suicidal despite his past full of murder and his own best friends death which was the only reason he became a good person. It’s like this for literally every character even the mc atsushi and despite his strength how abandoned he was by any and everyone who saw how different he was. And plot armor, cmon man look at any other show like one piece, one of if not the most complex and well written anime, everyone in the crew has plot armor but that doesn’t take away from the complexity. Again dumb fun stories are fine to enjoy, I enjoy em, bungo is not one of em.

      @@AntiKash Come on, dude, BSD is very much a formulaic shonen. Like, it's pretty hard to even argue otherwise regardless of how good the production is with the animation, music, etc.
      The plot is basically just a generic shonen where group of bad guys show up, time to fight them, and win because good guys win in shonen.
      There's hardly any symbolism really going on really and the only really well written characters were Sakunosuke and Ango while everyone else is pretty much a classic archetype.
      And, the character's trait aren't really symbolic or themes. They're comedic relief and they disappear as soon as things get serious, and many traits never resurfaced after the first season, actually.
      Also, Ranpo wasn't insecure. He was really crass before he knew what abilities were so his personality is unchanged and Fukuzawa convincing him he has an ability just was a way of him ratifying his superiority complex to stop being frustrated with people not being as smart as him. Like the time he lashed out during the play.
      Dazai would tease about ending his life before he ever left the PM as we saw with him before even meeting Chuuya. And that's one trait that's simply a distasteful reference to the real Dazai (and that's the only thing I do resent the show for).
      Atsushi wasn't as much "abandoned" as he was... well... tormented into believing he wasn't deserving of living, but even that theme takes a back seat along with Atsushi as he's intermittently a protagonist. But also his personality literally disappeared after meeting Kyoka and he was just your generic angsty MC after that.
      And at times the writing is very... Let's just say it indulges in plot contrivances. And that's fine for a silly story, but if you wanna talk like it's a serious story, then they're kinda elephants in the room you have to address even if it's petty.

      As I said, if you can't see the mental health issues addressed, I can't help you either. They helped me when I was at my lowest, so I speak from experience. And I know for a fact that I am not the only one. I got the messages that you can't see apparently. But go on. Some people are just blind. As Asagiri said, this show is not for everyone.
