My first strap was made from an old belt. Wasn’t fancy, but it served the purpose.

The thumb thing is a game changer! I have always used my thumb to "make chords" (like, I use it to make my C, Em and just about any chord that uses the 4th string) and I always felt weird and tried to hide it when playing with others until I just said, "F it" and did it my way. Solid advice here!

Thanks! I'll have to try that with my thumb! I do that with chords on the guitar, but I never thought about that with the banjo.

Boy are you spot on with the advice on getting a strap. My banjo actually came with a strap but I didn't think I needed to use it. After watching a handful of other videos where the folks emphasized the benefits of using a strap I decided to give it a try and man, what a difference it makes for all the reasons you mention. Thumb position on the neck..... yep you're right on with that one too. Fortunately, for whatever reason, I never needed to look at my right hand. For some reason the pick'in and pluck'in part came really natural to me but the left hand on the fret board, not so natural. That part I really gotta work on. Enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Much appreciated. Just found your channel today and subscribed. Looking forward to learning more from you!!

I really appreciate your videos that provide hints and actions for relatively new players. I see my instructor occasionally, but your videos are invaluable for a old fart like me. Thanks!

Thank you! I know exactly what you mean. I noticed the same thing about the the fret-hand thumb. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
