As a director myself but more in the corporate scene, this is super informative. I never knew how high level commercial works, thank you very much for your video. Can't wait to see more !
i'm in my fourth year of being a commercial director myself, yet I still feel like theres so much more that I need to know for me to become an effective one. I never had any mentor coming in to the business. I was lucky enough to be represented thru my friend's recommendation, but I've been navigating thru this whole thing almost half blindly. The information you give is so valuable, and although I'm already familiar with the processes, I'm still picking up so much from the content that you put out. The information and insights you share as a practicing commercial director is so hard to come by. It's like I've found a mentor in you. I'm very thankful I got to come across your channel.
One of the worst mistakes I made was picking a family friendly course over my own preference. I recently started taking classes on photography and videography since I am always intrigued by movies. I hope to make something of myself with what I'm learning since what I had chosen is proving to be invalid on my life. I'm going to trust myself as I pursue this. Thanks for your content 👏
as a commercial director you are still super young, that means there's a lot of room to be the top and the greatest one. i can see your potential and you see yours for sure. keep it up !
Thank you so much for this, Nur. Your transparency first of all is so refreshing and makes the info all the more valuable, and also going through your process helped a lot. Just like in Gian Carlo's channel - since you mentioned other filmmakers, drawing your information from your own experience made me a subscriber. All the best to you and thank you again!
Well said about schools not being able to keep up with new practices and current ideas. I have a bachelors degree but only credit that school with 1% of my productive knowledge. I didn’t think that’s how it would go. But like you, I saw other creators and decided to share one more perspective of a working DP. I’m new to your channel. Just subscribed. Keep sharing your perspective.
I'm so used to watching some frivolous content on TH-cam, I decided to check out something that can actually benefit me and my business and I'm happy I watched this from beginning to end, this really helped me out. Keep it up!
That was probably the fastest I have ever purchased a TH-camr's eBook. Thanks for your candor and for sharing your perspective. Your work is incredible! Subscribed.
Great insight. I agree, the overall school system is broken. If you really want you can learn 90% of the things nowadays online and 90% of it is free. Paying 50k for a semester and spending 3 years studying, will not guarantee any success either. Seen it firsthand in my family and friends, way too many times. The school system is more about the money grab then actual education.
Hi Nur! So glad I got recommended this video, you address so many things I’ve experienced and or am wanting to dig into! As a director who is trying to learn the money/buiness side of things KEEP TALKING ABOUT MONEY! Could do a more in depth, specific details on how you became a director? And if you were restarting today, what would be your strategy, etc!
Thank you so much ! Very inspiring. Absolutely agree that traditional schools are not keeping out with things, and it is nice to see that inspired by people like Danny, other creatives start sharing their path. Thanks.
Absolutely in love with your style; I can definitely can see how it would stand out among the others! I could relate strongly with constantly developing evolving. Keep it up!
Im 28 and always wanted to be a professional filmmaker and photographer. I've got a lot of spec work and test shoots but I never took the step to getting clients. Your channel is very inspiring
great video, very authentic and interesting to see as someone who started filmmaking as a hobby, looking for expanding it. You have great content so far! Hope the algo picks more of your videos.
Thanks for making these videos. It's really nice to see, giving back valuable advice for others (including me) to benefit from. Just looking at comments so many people sort of in the same boat, as me, I love that community feel. Keep going its awesome work so far :)
Thanks for this video, just breaking into directing- so much information i dont know! My experiences really mirror yours though, also trying to start youtube as a way to grow business, personal work, and passive income hopefully!
8:28 this is the first time i hear someone explain my thoughts! paying money for universities is no longer the best option to get information, they’re all very outdated and even if they try their best they just have to go through soooo many phases to upgrade their knowledge and info and teaching etc and by the time they do that the info is no longer the newest thing out there if that makes sense. loved loved your video and super excited to learn from your experience!
There is so much valuable and helpful info in this video. Thank you for sharing all of this, I definitely feel a little bit better about expanding and growing as a DP. Excited to see more of your videos!
I guess I’m gonna have to make a video on that. Since I started working with an agent this year, she helps me with bringing me more potential jobs. But before that and even to this day the surest way is to hit producers and show them your work. Then they bring you along on commercial projects.
Great content! I love your approach, sincerity, and concentrated speech. I am a fresh DP and moved to a new country a year ago, I struggle to make contacts as I find every director I meet already has their "fav" buddy DP, and prod. rely on them to choose their Heads Of Department. For now I survive making institutional videos as a videographer, but this one-man business deprives me of the collaborative joy of filmmaking. Any tips? Who to contact really when you are on the DP side of things?
There are times when all the DPs are busy and you get your chance if you hang around. Probably better target directors and producers, as those are the ones bringing you on set. Another route is to befriend other DPs and step on set as a 1AC/2AC of you’re good at it.
@@nurniazfilms I wonder how can you get 1AC/2AC jobs when you had very few experiences on set. I want to become a DP in the future but I think for now I have to start from camera assistance, to learn the basics while being on set, but I find it difficult to get those opportunities.
Thanks for sharing, man, i am really surprised by the rates you can get in Kazachstan. I am freelance filmmaker, studied directing at film school and find it challenging to find clients and work opportunities in Slovakia and now in Thailand. I am glad for you, seems like you did good job and made it. Ps. Filmschool i attended FAMO in Pisek, Czech rep. has courses in English for international students - 5000e per year, great teachers, well worth it, plenty of students from Russia there. Cheers and all the best.
Hey man! Yeah, there are some really good schools in Europe that are quite affordable, especially if you study in their language. I guess I was referring to the more mainstream schools.
Thank you for such genuine advice! As an upcoming Director and Creative in the bigger projects , I feel people need better insight about the industry like you have compiled in the video here! Thanks a lot, you've gained a sub :)
