    I find it really interesting that you say Old Rusty is underwhelming. I've been wanting to make a simple self mill deck for years now, and when I recently did I specifically choose Old Rusty as I thought he was the best option. Consistent mill every single turn from the command zone is beyond valuable, and fairly rare. A self mill deck simply doesn't function without self mill, so my rule of thumb is that the commander should do it if it's not doing something widely more busted like Muldrotha. Granted there is Old Stickfingers or Shessra, Death's Whisper. But one isn't repeatable, and the other I don't want to risk in combat so much. I want to sit back, do my own unassuming thing, and then reanimate Craterhoof or something.
    I don't care if the token isn't consistent, I don't even really plan on using the tokens. I mean, they are certainty useful of course. But for the most part I consider them sacrifice fodder for something like Dockside Chef, who doesn't care which card type it is.

    I have an Old Rutstein deck! And even if it's not my strongest deck, it's definitely one of the funniest to play. I build the deck trying to make use of all the tokens Rutstein makes. So Chatterfang (the Squirrel Commander) is amazing for this deck, Mazirek Kraul Death Priest works very well too, and Marionnette Master or Kamahl, Heart of Krosa are very impactful wincons

    I've recently started to build an Old Rutstein deck and I'm focusing on token creation and trying to get value from that. Fortunately there's been some recent support for that concept like Evolving Door, Peregrin Took, and Merkwood Bats. It's definitely been a tough build and I'm still not convinced on the approach but it'll be a fun experiment regardless.

      I think reanimator is better . You can discard with blood tokens the big creatures or use insect token for sacrifice with the spells that reanimate

    I have a Blex deck, and if I have one piece of advice to offer it's don't sleep on that flipside. Search for Blex is much stronger in practice than it appears to be.

    I know it's not EDH but i have made a historic brawl deck with old rutty that is pretty dope. I think an EDH with reanimate and big old creatures is a pretty good way to build with him.

    Definitely feel you might just be approaching Old Rutstein wrong, it's a really good value commander meaning you shouldnt build too much around it but be playing golgari good stuff with him generating extra value. Example being the I play him is to play a lot of creatures that get exponentially stronger for each card/creature in my GY and a lot of selfmill, grave recursion, and board wipes that kill my opponents creatures without killing my big creatures such as toxic deluge, finality, and gaze of granite. The goal being to win by both grinding out the rest of the table while also dropping massive bomb creatures that demand answers or threaten to hit people for 20+ damage every turn. To top it off Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord acts as an alternate wincon sacking things like sewer nemesis or nighthowler to one shot the entire table. I REALLY like the Vengeful Pharaoh idea and gotta go find one now but otherwise just think you approached the commander with the wrong mentality of how it works

    Okay so hear me out, I liked old Rutstein being insect themed, that's new and odd and really nice _but_ i think golgari tokens is already a thing, so i have an alternative take on it, Golgari graveyard matters _control_ with tokens.
    I'll try to build it and maybe later I'll edit this comment idk, maybe control-like decks in golgari are already a thing and I'm just a dummy idk.

      For a golgari control themed deck, my favorite little pet card, Vhati il-Dal
      is quite interesting. There are a number of ways to constantly give everything -1/-1, so you effectively have a commander that taps: destroy target creature.

    I had an idea of altering the monochrome version of Old Rutstein into Kaiji Ito, and make millions of Yen as treasure token, Kaiji's wounds as blood token, and men in black suits with toy antennas clapping their hands emotionlessly as insect token.

  • @XIIIHearts

    The only other way I see of making Go-Shintai of Hidden Cruelty better is finding ways of making copies of him. You only have 3 shrines in black and since shrine isn’t a creature type, you can’t use something like Conspiracy to make your creatures shrines. All that comes to mind at the moment is Helm of the Host for Go-Shintai of Hidden Cruelty itself. If there are any ways of making copies of the enchantment shrines without the tokens dying due to the legend rule, then that could also help.

      It's so weird because I saw so many people going crazy about him thinking he was going to enable weird strategies and he just does... nothing?
      It's self mill but only one a turn and all his self mill payoffs only proc off his mill so more self mill is effectively useless. His payoffs are just too minimal to do anything impactful and outside the treasure the tokens he makes are just useless, there are better ways to make lots of 1/1s and blood tokens.

    Copied spells are cast. Errant needs put into play or the equivalent. Instant and Sorcery theme is horrible for Errant. If it goes on the stack and can be flusterstormed, those are all cast spells. Just like in storm decks, where you are counting cast spells. It seems like instants and sorceries are always cast.

    • @kvetchenfinks7044
      @kvetchenfinks7044 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Copying a spell isnt casting it. If it was, magecraft wouldnt have to say "cast or copy" because it would be redundant. Just become something goes on the stack does not mean it was cast if it was a copy.

      @@kvetchenfinks7044 It is redundant, used as clarification. Copied spells are cast, sorry. Errant's ability herself casts a spell.

    • @edhdeckbuilding
      @edhdeckbuilding  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      probably should learn the rules before you comment. copied spells are not cast, unless is specifically says so like on isochron scepter. you absolutely do not need to counter a "cast" spell. "counter target spell" says nothing about it being cast. and if you are counting copied spells in your storm deck then you're cheating.
