I add a "debugging mode" panel under the hood to bypass and take control of ignition, ecu and starter. Because I work on my car in a tight garage, going back and forth just to start the engine is not efficient for me. So I add a remote panel to turn on my car from the engine bay. is it better to hook a kill switch to the: positive wire for the fuel pump? or SS2 wire for the ignition switch...? which will have less damage &or less error Codes...? on a 2025 hybrid camry
Great video. I just purchase a completed cobra replica that used a 92 mustang gt donor car and it’s wiring harness and ignition switch. The 92 mustang is notorious for a bad ignition switch. I want to remove the keyed ignition switch and use a new keyed switch (as in your video just using the off and run position) and the push button switch panel that you have in this video. I understand how you’ve wired the setup in the video. My question is using this setup on a car equipped with an ECU that needs to be powered during the start sequence and some components removed (or switched supply voltage) to reduce the current draw during the start sequence. I’ve mapped which items are powered in the current “RUN” position on which are powered during the “START” position. Should I use an additional relay to remove the power from items removed during the start position or just use the signal wire to the start relay on the back of the new push button?
Thanks for the great tip. I don’t have a race car/truck but I had to break my ignition switch due to I lost my key. No parts store or dealership has my part. I have an 85 Isuzu pup and looking for a way to redo my whole ignition system. This is a great way thank you. But I noticed that the system your using states for racing only?? But can you use it for just an everyday driving car?? What is the difference if there is any?? Thanks?? Again thank you for this great video, easy instructions and tutorial on how to wire one of these and also the relay.
Quick question, the main wire with the fuse, you placed a 20 amp fuse at the beggining before adding the fuel pump. Once you added the pump you switched it to a 5 amp fuse. Why did you do that? 2nd question, would you have to repeat the relay process like the fuel pump if you add another higher amp item like lets say the window motor? Enjoying the videos and learning a lot, wish I found them earlier. Thank you.
Is it possible to add a light to the fuel pump switch/relay to show that it is on? I have a similar setup on my race car and the switch works to turn on the relay but won't light up the LED. Great simple videos. I will be subscribing.
helo after looking extensiv about such content, i finaly found it very put together in this video. could you eleborate why the master switch needs ground ? is it for the lifght inside the switch and if there were no light inside the switch would it still need a ground conection ?
It is only used for the light bulb in the switch. If your switch doesn’t have that bulb, or you don’t care about the bulb, skip it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! Super helpful. Would it be advisable to have the on/off switch connected to a higher amperage relay that is connected to a power distribution block with individual fuses for each item (radio, A/C unit, window motors)? Or do I need to use individual relays for each item? Thanks!!
I have this same ignition switch that I'm trying to use on an old 1300 vw engine. I'm completely reworking the previous owner's wiring and they had a wire from the on/off switch to the alternator, is that needed? Also, how would the wire going to the coil fit into this?
Those switches are on my bucket list. I'm thinking of using that red switch as a battery power cut switch using a 200A relay (at the '-' terminal) because I rarely drive my truck & want to disconnect the battery easily. My problem is that I don't know how many amps are drawn from that terminal (full load). Have you done this kind of circuit?
This video has something similar to what you are attempting to accomplish. th-cam.com/video/Yz9kqxWkoHI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xI8FaaUs_WntqYmh As for amperage, you can get relatively cheap amperage measuring gauges that wrap around a wire and measure how much amperage is flowing through the wire. It sounds like it would be a 1 time use for you though which is a bit wasteful. So another option would be to add up the major amperage draws of your engine and make an educated guess. It will take some research online for sure to get a good guess, but you can probably get in the ballpark. Good luck with your project!
I need to ask before I buy one of this. You stated you needed a relay to power the fuel pump so the whole circuit don't go caput, do you need another relay to power the window motors and other stuffs? Can all of the accessories be in just one toggle switch? I want to keep everything as simple as possible, just one main power switch that turns everything on all at once and a push button for ignition. I don't know absolutely anything about wiring and anything. I don't even know what even a relay is. All I know is that it stops everything from getting fuxked.
I would highly recommend you check out some of my other wiring videos before you buy anything. Check out my wiring playlist, and probably this video th-cam.com/video/y5Q3QOR4PnM/w-d-xo.html. You may or may not need a relay depending on what you are powering. A relay allows you to control a LOT of electricity with a small switch. Without them, you burn out the switches and sometime cause fires. I explain all of these things in my other videos. Check them out.
@@UncleRJ - excellent! If you have a few more minutes, this would be the next one I would recommend, to help you understand relays a bit better. th-cam.com/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/w-d-xo.html
Off topic, but i need help! Here is what I am trying to accomplish...I have a digital voltage gauge. However it only has a + and a -. I don't want it to be on at all times. Only when I turn the vehicle on. ITs a nice little one. Looks semi "OEM" and has a cool little sequence when it starts up. Now, I have connected it to the vehicle 12V in the dash. But I want it to read directly to the secondary batterey (at the amplifier). My logic says a relay could possibly be the solution but i cant figure out if it is possable and how to do it.
This is very doable. You will need a 4 pin relay to make it happen. At the relay: - keyed ignition power to pin 86 - ground pin 85 - connect pin 87 to your volt gauge + - connect pin 30 to your secondary battery + (make sure there is a fuse in this wire, as close to your battery as possible. A 2.5 or 5 amp would be more than big enough.) Good luck - sounds like a fun project!
@@WiringRescue awesome! thats what i figured i just wanted to be 100% sure! when i do it i will tag you in the video. im doing a video series of the install on my channel.
this may be a silly question but I'm newer to vehicle/wiring. Im looking to get a unit with switches like that to keep it neat but want to wire the switches to various light bars/pods, could I just do a separate inline fuse and closed circuit to each switch instead of wiring them all together?
Wouldn't the fuel pump kick on when you put the key in the "on" position (in a stock vehicle)? If so how do you wire in a relay to the on position switch?
It depends on the car. Some fuel pumps run for about 3 seconds when the key is turned on and then stop unless the engine starts. Other fuel pumps only turn on when the engine is rotating. So to wires yours, you would need to probably do what the fuel injection system is requiring. That varies depending on the type of vehicle.

At the relay:
- keyed ignition power to pin 86
- ground pin 85
- connect pin 87 to your volt gauge +
- connect pin 30 to your secondary battery + (make sure there is a fuse in this wire, as close to your battery as possible. A 2.5 or 5 amp would be more than big enough.)
Good luck - sounds like a fun project!
@@WiringRescue can a 5 pin relay be used?
@@RandomRichZ - absolutely! Use a 5 pin, but just ignore pin 87A.
@@WiringRescue awesome! thats what i figured i just wanted to be 100% sure! when i do it i will tag you in the video. im doing a video series of the install on my channel.
so theoretically if you wired the ignition to the starter and the push button could you use both to power the starter?
good question, it should be possible i think but i am no expert
this may be a silly question but I'm newer to vehicle/wiring. Im looking to get a unit with switches like that to keep it neat but want to wire the switches to various light bars/pods, could I just do a separate inline fuse and closed circuit to each switch instead of wiring them all together?
Can you do a video on how to wire something so that it only comes on when the engine is running? Not acc or ignition on.
HOW DO i ADD A msd BOX ONTO THIS SYSTEM, WHICH i DOING IN MY RACE CAR WITH NO kEY SWITCH ? GREAT VIDEO BY THE WAY
Could you wire it up to be able to keep your accessory switch? Like be able to listen to the radio without the car started or power on
Wouldn't the fuel pump kick on when you put the key in the "on" position (in a stock vehicle)? If so how do you wire in a relay to the on position switch?
It depends on the car. Some fuel pumps run for about 3 seconds when the key is turned on and then stop unless the engine starts. Other fuel pumps only turn on when the engine is rotating. So to wires yours, you would need to probably do what the fuel injection system is requiring. That varies depending on the type of vehicle.
