Of course this is easier said than done, but the first step is buying a bus/plane ticket to your target start. After that it's all just getting life in order to live out your dream.

Agreed. I hiked last year. I watched this at kick off. I made the comment that your editing was really well done.
Watching this, and other traveling videos, makes me lust for my next adventure, rounding the Andes via motorcycle. Wanna ride with and experience an adventure as it happens? xD

2011 was a record year for snow in the Sierras. It made the desert absolutely beautiful, but the high country was a slog.
We left from the Mexican Border May 5th and hit Kennedy Meadows a week before the Summer Solstice. On October 26th we reached Canada- Very late, and very very snowy!

brian simpkins Yes, it was an absolutely crazy year with snow for us!
It's amazing how things work out - but Ian and I had met on the AT in the middle of winter. I think it was that experience of winter thru hiking that made walking thru spring snow much more manageable for us. Snow laid on our path, but at least it wasn't going down to -20 at night!
Thank you again for watching. Spread the word. This machine that is As It Happens Films is just me and the fans that support it.

"Amongst all this chaos, look at the beauty." Love that sentence. And I know what that means, I did a 2000 km walk four years ago and the beauty of the landscape makes the pain unimportant. Pain is just there and it wouldn't be as beautifull if there was no pain. Thank you for this film.

You can live the life until you drop. When I was forty-nine years old, I soloed for three weeks in the Mohave desert in Arizona. I had precooked rice rolled in honey, a water filter, a back-pack, a tarp, and some earplugs. I'm proud to say that sixty miles after I began, I staggered into Peach Springs looking like hell warmed over. I used to say that the desert belonged to me, but from that day forward I knew I belonged to the desert.

Just a suggestion. I have section hiked the PCT dozens of times up here in Washington. Doing sections can give you a good idea of what you can expect. And it draws you back over and over. I will never finish hiking Section K. I think about it during the winter and I spend all of my free time there in hiking season.

The highs, the lows and the strains told in your story and through the look in your eyes. Coming out of the Cinema or ending a Book you love is a great analogy. Really enjoyed the film 🎥 and wished I had watched you during your journey of extreme physical and emotional limits. I think this will be a hard one to surpass. But remember, without you the lone walker could not have completed his journey so by completing your journey you also completed his. Kudos.

I want to say a heartfelt thank you for sharing your super awesome video here without charge! The way you guys used your obvious penchant for storytelling to color the beautiful footage you took was very inspiring and incredibly well done. Kudos. Although I'm not new to long-distance hiking, I myself am setting out in a mere 8 weeks to try my hand (or foot?) on the PCT. I'm beyond excited and can't seem to stop watching your movie on repeat! Unbelievable film. This is the best documentation of the entire PCT thru hike I have seen. Very professionally done. The photography was amazing. I did the WA portion of the PCT in 2012 and appreciate how you capture so much of the real experience. I am blown away by how well your photography was while you were pushed to the limits physically and emotionally. Just finished it and will watch it again on the TV with my wife. My daughter and her boyfriend are preparing to hike the entire PCT starting in a couple of months and I will get her to watch this. Truly inspirational.

While it took us six-months to hike the trail it took me (Andy) nearly two years to go through and process all the photographs, write the narration, write/record all the music and edit this story together. In the end it is worth it when the story touches the hearts of our viewers.
      Again, thank you for watching.

    Beautiful film gentlemen.
I was going to take on the AT earlier this year after my job moved away. Before I set out on my trip I was diagnosed with cancer. Luckily everything was able to be taken out surgically without chemo and I now have a clean bill of health. My dad and I managed to do a 5 day section hike in the Smokies on the AT since then and my heart has yearned to return there everyday since then. I feel a little catharsis after watching your film and many times I felt I was alongside you. Take care gentlemen and I wish you many more safe adventures.

I caught your video by chance tonight... actually, I was looking for rattlesnake video of Idyllwild/San Jacinto Mountains. So... I thought I would watch a few minutes of your vid to see some mountain terrain of San Jacinto.
Well... here I am an hour and a half later... I watch the whole movie, all the way through.
I cannot elaborate enough how much I enjoyed everything about your film; narration, cinematography, image quality, story line, drama, humor, camaraderie etc. etc.
Thank you for making this film, and thank you for sharing it in it's entirety here on TH-cam for all to enjoy... thank you.

John - Your words have made brightened an otherwise gloomy morning here on the east coast.
The goal in setting out to make this film was to capture (as best we could) the essence of a thru-hike. From the pictures, footage, narration, and original soundtrack. In the end, we hoped this real story would inspire people to get out there and make a connection with nature. For both of us, it's been an ongoing and life-changing experience.
Again, thank you for your kind words and taking the time to watch this film. Continue supporting As It Happens TV content by sharing this film on the Pacific Crest today!

AsItHappens.TV Thank you for your reply. I enjoyed your film so much that tonight I shared with my wife. And as she knows... sometimes I can be into strange things... I am after all a rattlesnake hunter for pics and video, attraction to the preservation of rattlesnakes is just odd to some people.
So, as we settled in to watch your film, I could tell she was apprehensive... but within 15 minutes... It was great, and we enjoyed your documentary together. Denise and I ended up watching your journey all the way through (no pun intended).
Please tell me... did you do your own video (filming) or did you have a camera man? Who did the editing? Are you planning on another journey? And if yes, can you share your hopes and dreams? I have to commend you on the narration... from the heart and soul... made the film that much better, like... I was there.
And one last thing... just curious... are you Ian, or Andy?

    • @AsItHappensPCT
      @AsItHappensPCT  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

John Delgado Haha so many questions! Happy to answer.
For starters I'm Andy! The founder and director at As It Happens TV, also co-founder of The Dusty Camel.
For the Pacific Crest Ian and I had just one camera.
In the beginning we passed it between the two of us, but around mile one thousand I started taking on most camera responsibilities. The PCT is where I went from being just a writer, to also a photographer.
When we landed home I had a about 200GBs of footage and photos to work with.
It took over a year and a half for me to single handedly write the narrative, musically score the entire film (www.asithappens.tv/music/), edit the footage and process all photos with the 2.5D animation. It was a huge challenge. For me, even harder than actually walking/filming the thru-hike.
My ongoing work with As It Happens TV is based in films that inspire immersion in nature, or stories that change perspectives on it.
For me, genuinely connecting with nature has made me a stronger, humbler, happier, more compassionate, and fulfilled person. This is why I continue handcrafting content.
If I can inspire people to go out and connect with nature, or share a story that shifts the perspective on it, maybe those people will experience some of the same personal transformations I have.
Hope this answers your questions John - If you have any more, fire away!
Thanks for watching and supporting As It Happens TV

AsItHappens.TV Of course I have more questions... I will always have questions for you.
I am 58 years old and since watching your film, I can think of nothing else. The Pacific Crest Trail calls to me. And you wanna know something... I am born and raised in Northern California, City of Ukiah - Mendocino County... and I have never heard of the Pacific Crest Trail until the other day when I happened to catch your marvelous story here on YT. Haha... aint that just the darndest thing.
I will have questions for you... but for now... I'll wait.
I do have a rhetorical question, I'll explain... I would ask you 'what is the meaning of life?' - However, the question is rhetorical because I believe you know, but I don't want to know your answer. My answer to that question is somewhere on that trail... and it waits for me, when get there and find it... it is then that I will know the answer.
      I'll be in touch...
      Thank you Andy.
Please contact your friend Ian and tell him thank you for me.
I can't believe you guys had to look up on YT how to gut a trout - hahahaaa... that's awesome :-D

Jared- Thank you for watching and leaving this warm comment.
The only similarity between the AT and the PCT is that your walking. Outside that, they are very different experiences.
The AT surprisingly was more of a tough hike. The trail goes up and down mountains frequently and in the mid Atlantic sections is covered in rocks (which murder your feet).
The PCT is smooth and rolling. You can cover a lot more ground in a day and not get nearly so beat up.
This said, the AT has shorter stretches between towns and a larger support system in the towns (though the PCT has grown significantly in popularity and towns are well equipped for hikers).
Both hikes are musts for anyone inspired to connect with nature. And don't forget the CDT! If you have the first two, a triple crown is inevitable.
Thanks for your support. Stay tuned!

Loved the in depth details of certain parts and the length of footage put together, especially on the parts of all the help that was graciously given through trial angles, hitching, and housing. Not to mention how inspiring it is. Not just the journey but the awesome, creative ideas within each shot and the amount of a designer's eye in each shot.

***** Thank you! I think I remember your first comment way back when. Amazing to think in about a week or so this video will have been up for an entire year!
Again, this documentary is the result of a few years of work for me, but in the end I hope it inspires people to get out there and connect with nature.
Thank you so much for your continued viewership.

Hey, I wanted to let you guys know that someone has stolen your film and posted it on their own TH-cam channel. They have the thumbnail for the video set as the thumbnail for Only The Essential, but it is your film... The channel is Discovery Channel HD and the video title is "PACIFIC CREST TRAIL | A Journey From Mexico To Canada (Really Amazing!!!)." I'd report it myself but I don't think you can unless it's your own video. I also couldn't find a DM option to contact you.
Anyways... I am starting the PCT this April, I love your documentary and it made me mad that someone would steal it. I met my first PCTer when I was 6 and it's been a downward spiral from there. :)
