I'm going to guess that when you were putting the little clips back on the main shaft when you explained the taper on the clips to hold the snap ring pliers in, I guess that when you jumped cut to 'that there was very aggrivatin' todo' means we didn't get to watch you deal with that due to possibly not so family friendly language? : ) I'm sure that's not the case, but if so, it does happen to all of us!! What a great time spent with you working on that m20.. great gearbox for a chevy!!
edit: I figure with most jobs, it ain't right if I only had to do it once!!

I appreciate you mentioning me in your video. Also, and oh by the way, since you rebuild several transmissions, get you some grease called Trans Jel. Trans Jel is super thick grease that will keep those pesky needle bearings in place. It also works great at holding check balls in place on valve bodies. Tech tip for manual transmissions: Take your old counter shaft and turn it down a couple of thou and shorten it on the lathe. Then, insert it in the counter gear to help hold the needles. Place the counter gear in the trans and insert the new counter shaft, through the case, behind the old shaft. And gently push the old counter shaft out with the new one. Some people use a wooden dowel to do the same. Great video! Keep up the great work

Old countershaft? You've got to have a new one in order to have an old one. 🤣 Eh, I don't do enough transmissions to need all that fancy stuff anyway.

I always thought that "shifter arm" was the stick as in a stick shift, lol. Also, I know they don't look as "cool" but if you could find a vintage steering wheel with its larger circumference I bet it'd make it a whole lot easier to steer with its manual steering.

  • @mtnlinda

I remember rebuilding a Corvair 4 speed and I used a dummy shaft to retain the needle bearings while I lined up the shaft in the case. Then I pushed the real shaft in, which pushed out the dummy shaft. That worked for the transmission, but I think it only had 2 rows of needles, not 4

  • @phillipbray8175
    @phillipbray8175 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I had a dummy shaft made to hold the roller bearing in and that was driven out as you drive the proper shaft in place it makes it quick and easy to install the cluster gear in the gearbox

Thank you for another enjoyable Friday night. The way you film and edit is perfect. Not a bunch of time wasted watching like watching others who insist on showing the slow death removal of every bolt. You have the perfect line: "Let me do this and I'll get back with you". Keep up the great work Chad!

I admire your patience. I would be screaming and crying. Very educational. I once had a 55chevy 2 door sedan and I put a Muncie close-ratio 4 speed in it. It had been rebuilt and it worked perfect. I got it for $50 from a guy who said he took it out of his son's Camero in order to stop him from drag racing . I was happy

I have not worked on a rear wheel drive transmission for years but when I did, I always used a shortened "dummy" shaft in the countershaft gears to hold the rollers in place during assembly in the box. I think that is how many were assembled in the factory.

As a kid we had a bassett hound that used it's nose as a dirt bulldozer too, LOL! We once watched it behind the barn trying to bury a chicken that done got stiff from rigor with one wing stuck up in the air. It'd get the body covered and that wing would stick up, then when it tried covering the wing, patting the dirt down with it's ears darned if the body wouldn't come riding back up again from under the dirt. The dog was less than pleased to say the least as it would bark at that dead bird and start all over again. I wish the transmission on my little Ranger would come out that easy. Back about 3 years ago the slave cylinder on it went bad and on those Rangers the slave cylinder is inside of the bell housing. So since I had to remove the transmission anyhow I went ahead and changed everything I could think of while I had it off. Clutch, master cylinder, slave cylinder, flywheel and rear main seal. Hopefully it'll be good for another 23 years now, lol.

LOVE miss Daisy!! I know it's not the same but when I used to rebuild the 3 speed tranny in my 59 ford several times (trying to speed shift drag racing) I always used rubber bands to hold the sincro gear pads in place. First drive and they were chewed up and out of the way. Another good video.

Very good job on the rebuild. if your reverse linkage is hitting the trans mount ... you don't need that entire mount, just use the death wheel or a sawzall to slice some off for clearance.
its gotta custom trans mount, perfect.

I'll check out the merch, but not going there... looking at your junk .... thats just not right! Got my own junk... LOL, yeah thats what we called them/lol, as most of us did in the service. You did a great job on the transmission. I do think I used rubber bands to hold the clips on those synchro clips. And I believe some of those clips had a "S" clip on the inside part of the clip that would hold them in place when new. All those wide ratio transmissions howled at the moon after they broke in. We ran the scavenger pipes on the ends of our "at best" poor exhaust systems that was drain pipe or heaven forbid water pipe and lots of different exhaust systems stick welded together so that it looked like a freak system at best. The scavengers dumped in front of the rear end an sparks flew when we downshifted instead of using brakes to slow down in the corners. Those pipes would cackle loud as we went by the preacher's house. He stood for it till his boys went off to college... then to my surprise brought out his own hot rod! A 63 ford galaxie Fairlane ... only his was a 289, three on the tree an he sold it to my little brother. I looked under it to see just what all was under it as we all did in those times. It had one of the nicest racing suspensions ever an it stayed in corners like its feet were glued in. It had a second gear that went clear to ninety mph and then shift into third to just bury that speedometer! It had the wide ratio transmission... I'm soft on memory but think it was called a M2 transmission... don't think that is correct but every gear in that transmission was super heavy duty and like for first would run sixty mph. When you looked at the speedometer it said "POLICE SPECIAL" and I do believe it for sure. I did everything to get that car from my brother as it was one of the nicest two door hardtops I've ever looked at. I would put my ssi check up for collateral, that it had a low number of productions made. My kid brother was one of those clean cut church boys and I was one to black his eyes just before church so when he would stand in church with both of his eyes turning black he could remember me right well. I was a grease ball, hair included with the black leather vest and engineer boots. Everyone hated me and shuddered at the thoughts of their daughter going out with me. I rode my harley up to my brothers wedding and made a ton of dust and noise but he stayed back from me and then one night when I was bugging him, he shot me five times in the back. It was just a 22 so had my woman dig them out with a knife. I thought I was tough. When I went to nam, I found out .... yeah, my s*** did stink and I was not the big bad a** I thought I was. Heck, now you probably hate me too.

  • @deilusi

I am amateur so take my comment as assumption, BUT I think what this gearbox lost was synchro springs, which mean the lock 18:20 was loose and in gear clash lock was not engaging, making synchronizers work overtime all the time, probably syncing gears 2 & 3 always and forever.
it would make sense as missing sync spring make sure that your lock is always in correct position, and when you speed up, it's pushed out by acceleration/centrifugal force.
4'th don't do it as it's already spinning fast enough that lock is in correct position all the time.
