Back Surgery/Discectomy Post-Operation and the first Month Part 3 (How to Sleep)

  • This video will explain, briefly, the tools I used to cope with pain associated with a herniated disc surgical procedure. Most of the videos online dealing with this subject just lacked the information I need prior to "the big day" of surgery and what to do to make my life easier afterwards. So, one month after recovery, I decided to make a few videos with information I hope you can use.

    Thank you !!!
I recently had four serious hours of back surgery.
Sleeping is probably my biggest difficulty.
Your videos are far more informative than the clinical ones I watched.

I'm about 4 years out of surgery. I can tell you that I will never be the same again, but I'm thankful for the place I'm in now. My pain is now managed with ibruprofen only and I sleep on muscle relaxers. Walk every day. Look into antidepressants that reduce anxiety which also causes low back pain, use ice often, walk every day, and stretch.

Thank you so much for making this video. This is my 5th day after surgery and getting into bed was SO painful until I found your video. I wish they would have shown me this before I left the hospital.

Thank you so much!!! You are a asset to the healing process of this community. Blessing to you and your family. I am showing this video to my husband tomorrow. We are three days in to his recovery and getting in bed is such a challenge. I love the idea of prepping before hand. My family cannot thank you enough.

Thank you for taking the time & effort to produce this video. I am awaiting a surgery date to have 2 cysts removed from my L4-5 area & fusion with L3-4 & L5- Si to stabilize my spine. I am 81 years young & have much fear about my independence & recovery time. Your video helped a lot to aid me in preparing my bed @ home for a successful nights comfort- I hope!

U may be right. It's been 4 years later and .u is the first one to tell truth. I had back surgery truthfully your life is never the same. So really it's up to me and God to deal with the this problem. To the ones never had back surgery get one and tell me about it. Then u will see how your life will be. Every thing happens to people for a reason. Not.to keep on over doing it God give u a second chance. Take the load off. I tried to work again it's not worth it.

I stumbled on your Videos a few weeks prior to my surgery, and bought everything that you have here if I had not I don't know how I would be able to function these last few days. By far this is the best "Post-back surgery" vid I've watched! This was the one time I didn't listen to my wife about watching these vids about the fusion surgeries and I'm glad. I have 16 days before L3-L4, L4-L5 and L5-S1 fusion and of all 13 surgeries I've had, including hip replacement, doubt has entered my mind. I guess that is normal but THIS ONE worries me. Im 6-1 and 275... a strong guy whos lifted weights since I was 12 so being laiden with muscle mass has me a bit worried with the "barrel" roll incorrectly lol. This vid has me relieved to say the least... THANK YOU!

I'm scheduled tommorrow for a steroid injection. My doc said if it helps with the pain surgery will help the pain go away. I have back pain on my left side when I sit not when I walk or stand. chris daniel , I ordered the knee pillow and memory foam pillow from eBay. I also ordered a butt wipe gadget for only about $7. It has a curved wand with a claw on one end to grab butt wipes and a release button on the other. Get flushable wipes. I already have a toilet seat riser from my family which will make it less distance to sit down and a plastic squeeze bottle bidet with a curved neck to spray water on your buttsie. Hope I’m not embarrasing you but after a rotator cuff surgery I used the bidet and it was most helpful. It is cheap from eBay. Another idea is to get a cookie sheet with sides or a tray to hold coffee and drinks and will catch any drips. I’m ready!!!

im 23year and had my back surgery nearly 3years ago. i still get kind annoying sort symptoms on my back sometimes on my left side leg. most of time im good feel like im almost normal and few times with that weird small pain being very depressed. i tracked myself when i get the pain back and i strongly believe the pain comes when im stressed anf depressed anf worrying about my.back.too.much and limiting myself. there is a pain cup in.my body it fills up as time goes on once it reach at the top the small pain hits me and take one to two days to get back. last weeks started sit down quite a lot with my school work and also started my personal training at the gym with tough work out whuch i never down since i hurt my back. then few days ago i got my leg pain back all of sudden its been 2years since i had this thigh nerve pain after surgery.

So, I reherniated my disc about 3 months after surgery because I decided to move textbooks. My pride cost me another year of pain. So, I don't know if you've managed this situation. But, I can tell you that taking some form of antidepressant helps the tension in your low back. Have you spoken to your doctor?

I'm able to walk around without walker. Heck I actually ran a little while in the yard to avoid the sprinkler. Don't jog, that's too bouncy. My back muscles get fatigue if I stand for long periods of time. My legs get achy at night. I've eliminated norco a week after coming home from the hospital (withdrawal sucked) and am on 200mg Gabapentin (nerve damage) and a melatonin at bedtime and I take a T3 when I wake up but I usually don't take pain meds for the rest of the day.
I am doing yard work and was doing it within a couple of weeks of my operation. Dr was mad when I told him this because he said the bones need time to mend and stabilize. I'm too active to be a bump on a log. So I've been a bit naughty but have not picked up much and I've avoided digging or hacking away at weeds.
I bought a 2" thick memory foam to top my bed because I noticed my back was reacting to my old lumpy mattress but I don't have the $thousands$ necessary for a new bed set. It works, I can sleep comfortably on my back as well as on my side. I noticed that the Gabapentin and melatonin combo keeps me from feeling the aches in my legs and it allows me to sleep a full 8 hours+.
I have stopped wearing the brace when I go shopping. Yes I drive now as I don't take meds during the day. Long shopping outings DO cause back pain and fatigue still. I'm pretty sure that's going to be a thing for a few months as all the muscles that were cut during surgery need time to grow back. I have to remind myself that I just had surgery about one month ago.
Things are better now than before my surgery. Well, they are structurally better because my back was so far damaged that my lumbar spine was almost a V by the time Dr. Sharif did the surgery. I am so used to wearing out my body and abusing it by picking up massive furniture and doing hard yard labor, etc... I'm just not used to having to be responsible for my own body and taking it easy. I'm wanting to construct a greenhouse around my aquaponics system before the November cold gets here, but I have to hold back and wait for others who are stronger to help me do things that I normally do myself. So frustrating!
My independent attitude can be my biggest enemy. I need to remember that I can't do the hard labor stuff for a few more months. Be careful that you don't cause damage to your own newly repaired back. The last thing you want is a chronic condition that may make your surgery the bane of your existence. Make some stew with bone broth and sit back and just do something constructive on the computer for now. Good luck, my dear.

  • @merlebump5328
    @merlebump5328 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So, is the discectomy just a removal of the herniated part? I was originally going in for that, but the doctors decided the disc was too far gone to do that, because it would probably re-herniate. So, my whole disc was replaced and a bracket put in, which holds in the disc and also keeps pressure off the disc. Connected to the vertebrae above and below. I was walking day 4 and went home the same day. I also returned to work 2 weeks later. It's been a month and a half now. I can't complain. I've been off the meds after 2 weeks as well. Occasionally I get a slight pain in the but and sometimes a little pain in the calf. I'm guessing that is due to the damage that the sciatic nerve received over several years of being crushed

Honestly, I've had back pain ever since the surgery. Prior to surgery, my pain level was intense (between 7 and 10). After surgery, my pain has been around 2 to 6. There was a ton of improvement, and I don't regret getting surgery. In time your pain will decrease. Don't get your expectations too high. Just be thankful its not as bad as before. :) My biggest piece of advice I can give you (that I ignored slightly) is to limit your lifting to under 10 pounds for at least 4 months. I developed scar tissue that I'm 90% sure came about as a result of doing more than I should have during that first few months post surgery.

I'm having trouble sleeping, not because of position, but because I just simply can't fall asleep, I've laid in bed some of these nights in the first 14 days till 6 am simply not able to sleep. Did you experience this? I had an l4-l5 discectomy and l5-s1 was relieved by removing stenosis, I'm literally writing this as I am laying here unable to sleep. Before the surgery I could fall asleep in under ten minutes.

Most lower back pain is a result of stress and anxiety. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I've been under stress since I was a little kid. The thing that helped me finally sleep and relax was anti depressants. Not only did it reduce ALL my lower back pain, but it improved my quality of life. Have you thought about using THC? I use a muscle relaxer at night and a calming pill from the doc ( tizanadine and buspirone)

Christopher Gibson Hey, got about 4 hours of sleep, and yes I do use thc but when I was about 4 days post op I used edibles because I was afraid to cough because I coughed once in those first few days and it hurt so bad. When the edibles started to take effect i suddenly had a huge radiating pain right from my lower back that was so bad I could barely even breath. It kind of turned me away from thc but I have tried just smoking since then only once and I did sleep better the next two nights after that but didn't really associate it to the thc use. I am always stressed out and I have anxiety all the time but have never talked to my doctor about it. What do I need to say in order to get something like that? Because I live in a legal state, but also don't want to jeopardize potential future jobs with thc use.

I had my operation and now day three, can't ad sleep at all,was told for six week only thirty minutes in a chair, and focus on lie or stand up and short walks,I had L5/S1 question what is best... lying down most of the day? it's what I want but feel wrong.

    • @christophergibson5075

Sitting down is not recommended for the first month. If you do have to sit, it should be at 10 mins at a time. I spent my first 3 months either lying down or standing. Make sure you are walking daily. First week around the house, 2nd week outside the house, 3rd week around the block, and so on. You will probably have to ice often everyday for atleast a month to reduce swelling. For my first month, I spent 90% laying down. Lastly, don't let pride force you into precarious situations. You should limit how much you carry for the first 3 months. Keep it under 10 pounds and no repetitive back movements. Be patient. It will take some time. I"m at year 4 and I still have days where I'm uncomfortable. I would also suggest muscle relaxers or even antidepressants. They help alleviate the tension in your low back while you recover. Good luch

Wow mate thanks for the help Thanks....very much!
I have taken no tablets at all, guess been lucky, just very tight after stabding to long, although walking I think to much in the garden as woke up with guess a dull ache.I had my operation one week ago Wednesday, I just seem to get so tired,I "NEVER" sit only stand or now just small walks, I just want to give myself the best chance in this.Sadly still have a numb right foot but was told may go over time. And now I have done to much looking on the internet and making me think did I do the right thing? When I was there at the hospital last week, well it was almost a month I was like OK,but previous postponed and again all came back, but been dogged by that last spasm for 18 months,Yes 18 months.
I keep looking on the internet, will I get 100% back to normal, when can I gym, when stomach exercises again, and big one,doc says 6 weeks I can fly long haul but better 8 wks is better. And sitting, guessing you are thinking mmm weird chap?...sitting I mean my job was sitting, and we all sit and Mmm to long, but how long before I can sit like you know hours? cause again my job is hours, then I worry was this a mistake?
So anyhow now it's a week, and I am looking at another two weeks till I venture Into the city? and 6 for.... what bending etc etc? and 8 to fly?
Totally tired and bored, really need this much rest?
I am sorry if I am asking way way to much, but really nobody to share anything with on this, I just feel like it's never gone be normal again, even if well before was not normal and for so long.
      Just really worried,
Worried as I say I can't "my" normal again.
